Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through direct engagement with gardeners, activists, and residents, Miranda Martinez shows the breadth and diversity of the community gardening movement and how these groups inserted themselves into local politics and development to create change. She demonstrates how real people are effective as social forces amid large scale urban change and looks at the complexities and contradictions involved in transformations of urban neighborhoods. One of the most important contributions of this study is its focus on the Puerto Ricans of the Lower East Side and their struggle to sustain its Latinidad. It goes deeply into the ethnic and cultural significance at the neighborhood and personal level to show the contradictory meanings of gentrification to Puerto Ricans and others, and more importantly, the ways that the history and culture of Puerto Ricans are ignored, devalued, and erased. By going to the grassroots, this book vividly demonstrates how Puerto Ricans interact with the global and local trends involved in gentrification and how the struggles against displacement can alter the boundaries of the process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dengue fever is the world’s most prevalent mosquito-borne illness, but Alex Nading argues that people in dengue-endemic communities do not always view humans and mosquitoes as mortal enemies. Drawing on two years of ethnographic research in urban Nicaragua and challenging current global health approaches to animal-borne illness, Mosquito Trails tells the story of a group of community health workers who struggle to come to terms with dengue epidemics amid poverty, political change, and economic upheaval. Blending theory from medical anthropology, political ecology, and science and technology studies, Nading develops the concept of "the politics of entanglement" to describe how Nicaraguans strive to remain alive to the world around them despite global health strategies that seek to insulate them from their environments. This innovative ethnography illustrates the continued significance of local environmental histories, politics, and household dynamics to the making and unmaking of a global pandemic.

Book excerpt: The texts in this book examine the processes that are currently transforming maritime features into cultural heritage. More than the state of maritime culture per se, the book focuses on the way in which this heritage is being constructed and used today. The authors set out their respective approaches, based on ethnographic and historical case studies from all over the Iberian Peninsula (Catalonia, Galicia, Andalusia, and the Basque Country), and from Yucatan (Mexico) and Brittany (France). The aim of presenting these different outlooks on maritime culture as heritage is to help bring together the theory and the practice of maritime heritage.\n\n

My father, Alfredo Holguin Pombo, was president of a Mortgage Company and vice-president of El Banco de Colombia. He taught me to love poetry; my mother, Beatrice Murray Fairbanks de Holguin Cayzer wrote a newspaper column Buzzing With Bea for the Palm Beach Daily News for a period of fourteen years and four books, including Tales of Palm Beach. My aunt Elaine Murray Stone has written twenty books among them a biography on Mother Theresa. Both my grandfathers were Ambassadors, my cousin Jorge Holguin, may he rest in peace, owned a Theatre Company and wrote books, among them MadreSelva; my great grandfather was president of Colombia. I am related to three other Colombian Presidents, to William Prescott who wrote The History of the Conquest of Mexico and Peru in the 1800s; to Rafael Pombo, my great-great uncle who wrote Nursery Rhymes which are still read today by Colombian children; to Jonathan Fairbanks who built the oldest wooden frame house in the U.S.A. (Dedham, Mass.) and to Empress Eugenie Bonaparte, wife of Napoleon III. I have often wondered how Im going to achieve as much as these and other family members. With these two books of English and Spanish poetry I hope to become a distinguished member of my family. I was married for twenty-two years to the artist Ricardo Morales-Hendry and we have two daughters: Vanessa and Veronica and a grandson, Tristan Anthony Virgo. I currently reside in West Palm Beach, Florida. U.S.A. ***This book was given a 4-star rating by Amazon BOOK REVIEW "A slight collection of lyric musings on lifes grand passions. When the reader conjures an image of poetry, one would imagine the specimens in this tiny volume would come to mind. Morales-Hendry uses traditional verse forms like the sonnet and devices such as end rhyme to convey the ever-classic themes of love and desire for most of the pieces. The only characteristic slightly distinguishing this from the norm of self-published American verse is that the collections second half is Spanish poems, reflecting the poets bilingualism and joint Colombian and American heritage, of which, according to her authors note, she is particularly proud. The English poems brim with emotion, mostly centering on love in its more accustomed formsbetween man and woman, parent and childwith a couple humorous pieces exploring the relations of domesticated mammals (Cookie and Spooky, Love and the Conqueror) tossed in for levity. Some of the love poems are proscriptive, offering recipe-like instructions for relational harmony (The MiniLove Lesson) and satisfying sex (The Love Lesson), while others wax on, painting the page with lots of one-dimensional moons, sky, fire and stars. --Kirkus Discoveries

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food policy and practices varied widely in Nicaragua during the last decades of the twentieth century. In the 1970s and ‘80s, food scarcity contributed to the demise of the Somoza dictatorship and the Sandinista revolution. Although faced with widespread scarcity and political restrictions, Nicaraguan consumers still carved out spaces for defining their food choices. Despite economic crises, rationing, and war limiting peoples’ food selection, consumers responded with improvisation in daily cooking practices and organizing food exchanges through three distinct periods. First, the Somoza dictatorship (1936–1979) promoted culture and food practices from the United States, which was an option only for a minority of citizens. Second, the 1979 Sandinista revolution tried to steer Nicaraguans away from mass consumption by introducing an austere, frugal consumption that favored local products. Third, the transition to democracy between 1988 and 1993, marked by extreme scarcity and economic crisis, witnessed the re-introduction of market mechanisms, mass advertising, and imported goods. Despite the erosion of food policy during transition, the Nicaraguan revolution contributed to recognizing food security as a basic right and the rise of peasant movements for food sovereignty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Katharine Greider was told to leave her house or risk it falling down on top of her and her family, it spurred an investigation that began with contractors' diagnoses and lawsuits, then veered into archaeology and urban history, before settling into the saltwater grasses of the marsh that fatefully once sat beneath the site of Number 239 East 7th Street. During the journey, Greider examines how people balance the need for permanence with the urge to migrate, and how the home is the resting place for ancestral ghosts. The land on which Number 239 was built has a history as long as America's own. It provisioned the earliest European settlers who needed fodder for their cattle; it became a spoil of war handed from the king's servant to the revolutionary victor; it was at the heart of nineteenth-century Kleinedeutschland and of the revolutionary Jewish Lower East Side. America's immigrant waves have all passed through 7th Street. In one small house is written the history of a young country and the much longer story of humankind and the places they came to call home.
