Book Synopsis Gesture and the Dynamic Dimension of Language by : Susan D. Duncan
Download or read book Gesture and the Dynamic Dimension of Language written by Susan D. Duncan and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-06-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of the 21 chapters in this volume reflects a view of language as a dynamic phenomenon with emergent structure, and in each, gesture is approached as part of language, not an adjunct to it. In this, all of the authors have been influenced by David McNeill's methods for studying natural discourse and by his theory of the human capacity for language. The introductory chapter by Adam Kendon contextualizes McNeill’s research paradigm within a history of earlier gesture studies. Chapters in the first section, Language and Cognition, emphasize what McNeill refers to as the intrapersonal plane. Many of the chapters adduce evidence for McNeill's claim that gestures can serve as a window onto the speaker's mind. Chapters in the second section, Environmental Context and Sociality, emphasize the interpersonal plane and exemplify McNeill's focus on how moment-to-moment language use is determined by contextual factors. The final section of the volume, Atypical Minds and Bodies, concerns lessons to be learned from studies of aphasic patients, autistic children, and artificial humans.

Book excerpt: If Not This Dream is an 1134-page fast-paced novel presented in three books. The night before Zaki, his family, Safiyah Hadejia, and Thomas depart for Nigeria, Africa, to search for Mdawwri, Biggs shows him where his family has buried sixteen giant black-iron cauldrons full of gold coins, now worth billions. When the group arrives at Lagos, Nigeria, they board a Sikorsky S-92, a five-blade helicopter, and fly northeast. When they land at Hadejia, Ahmadu Hadejia, Safiyahs father, and his men surround the machine, all pointing assault rifles at it. The group exits the helicopter, all inspected by Ahmadu. After taking the group into his modern home, Ahmadu gives permission for his daughter to accompany them to the village of the circle, charging Zakis mother with her safety. Three weeks later, the group returns, this time Safiyah asking her father if she can return to America with the family. When he learns that his daughter has lost her virginity to Zaki, an infidel, he goes into a rage, threatening to behead his daughter and Zaki. Safiyahs mother pleads for mercy from her husband. He finally bans Safiyah from his home under curse, never to see her again. They escape in their chartered Sikorsky S-92, a five-blade helicopter. The young pureblooded American Hausa fulfills his ancestors dream and embarks on his own dream, building a self-sustaining all-black private school and town outside Charleston, South Carolina. Tragedy propels Zaki into national spotlight. Interviews on Larry King Live, the Oprah Winfrey Show, and an overnight stay in the Obama White House on the fourth of July facilitate the acceleration of phase two of his dream. Phase three of the dream is for all African American people to return to their roots to rebuild their culture in the original Dixie states of America. Phase three will shake Americas foundation.

Download or read book Trinitasm written by Zachery Stantz and published by Page Publishing, Inc. This book was released on 2020-09-16 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In God we trust, yet under the umbrella of religion, the world remains full of sorrow, sin, and misfortune. Wrongful, wicked, wayward, and more than ever, woeful, mankind teeters on the edge of self-annihilation. Homelessness, hunger, and inequality are endured in a world that has become dangerously overpopulated and profoundly polluted. If you were to be granted one wish that would ensure the survival of both people and planet, what would you wish for? The year is 2020, and by divine decree from the powers that be, three religious leaders attain a never-imagined unity. A Christian, a Muslim, and a Jew are chosen and commanded to make such a wish. They are called the Trinitas, and the effect of their remedial request is called Trinitasm. For some, what befalls shall indeed be a disaster, but for the lives of most, it's to be nothing less than happily ever after. Angelic adventures, a glimpse of the afterlife, and an unprecedented peek at the Heavens are presented in this spiritually sponsored, poetic prophecy. So, too, this be a book of beware, and a manuscript with a message for a world that's soon to receive a bit of heavenly hocus-pocus. Be it perceived as preposterous and playful or possible and pending, free will dictates that the choice is yours.

Book Synopsis Tobacco Goes to College by : Elizabeth Crisp Crawford
Download or read book Tobacco Goes to College written by Elizabeth Crisp Crawford and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-03-13 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to document the history of cigarette advertising on college and university campuses. From the 1920s to the 1960s, such advertisers had a strong financial grip on student media and thus a degree of financial power over colleges and universities across the nation. The tobacco industry's strength was so great many doubted whether student newspapers and other campus media could survive without them. When the Tobacco Institute, the organization that governed the industry, decided to pull their advertising in June of 1963 nearly 2,000 student publications needed to recover up to 50 percent of their newly lost revenue. Although student newspapers are the main focus of this book, tobacco's presence on campus permeated more than just the student paper. Cigarette brands were promoted at football games, on campus radio and through campus representatives, and promotional items were placed on campus in locations such as university stores and the student union.
