The adventure and practical lessons he finds along the way replace the further education he craves...Aware of this, the anonymous chronicler who has preserved it for us goes on to comment that the Princess said at once too much and too little. He makes phrases in his turn-which I will spare you-and seeks to prove, that, if the moieties of divinity and beastliness are equally balanced in a man, that man will be neither good nor bad. Then he passes on to show us a certain poor swineherd, who rose to ultimate eminence, in whom the godly part so far predominated that naught else was humanly discernible, and a great prince-of whom more will be heard in the course of this narrative-who was just as the beasts that perish, without any spark of divinity to exalt him. These are the extremes. For each of the dozen or so intermediate stages which he discerns, our chronicler has a portrait out of history, of which his learning appears to be considerable.

Book excerpt: Bellarion the Fortunate, set in the Marquessate of Montferrat and later in the Duchy of Milan, is the tale about a cunning young man who finds himself immersed in the politics of fifteenth-century Italy. Bellarion, abandoned as a child and raised in an abbey, departs as a young man with a letter of introduction from the respected abbot, intending to study in Pavia. Upon arriving in Casale he finds himself pursued by the authorities, who suspect him of complicity with a well-known scoundrel named Lorenzaccio da Trino. He flees until he reaches a palace, where a beautiful lady, who turns out to be the Princess Valeria of Montferrat, hides him from his pursuers. To show his gratitude, Bellarion offers to carry Princess Valeria's message to a certain Lord Barbaresco. He discovers that Barbaresco and a group of friends are plotting the murder of Regent Theodore, Valeria's uncle, while Theodore is plotting to keep the throne for himself. Bellarion gets involved in intrigues which lead to a murder, an arrest and a prison break, as he escapes to Milan only to find more troubles.

Book excerpt: Creator of the legendary Captain Blood, Rafael Sabatini is one of the most outstanding authors of historical adventure stories. An Italian-English author, he was called the “Alexander Dumas of modern fiction.” Sabatini was born in Italy but spent much of his youth in England and other European countries. He first achieved fame as a journalist before becoming one of the greatest adventure novelists in the history of world literature. It took Sabatini almost 20 years after publishing his first novel to gain notoriety. Success finally arrived in 1921 with the publication of Scaramouche, a novel about the French Revolution. Soon the author’s pen shifted to tales of the sea – scribbling adventures of free corsairs. Sabatini’s full talent revealed itself in books like The Sea Hawk and The Black Swan. His legendary series featuring Captain Blood became popular the world over. Today, his books are still treasured by readers and have served as the inspiration for dozens of films.
