Book excerpt: This book explores the responses of leading European avant-garde painters to the operas of Richard Wagner, the most influential composer of the late nineteenth century. The term avant-garde represents a twenty-first century evaluation of certain nineteenth-century artists working in a variety of advanced styles, rather than a phrase the artists applied to themselves. Chapters are on individual artists or groups, rather than an attempt to survey all of nineteenth-century Wagnerian visual art. They deal with paintings and drawings inspired by Wagner and his operas, not with the composer’s larger cultural influence through his writings and personal example. Thus artists such as Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, who knew of Wagner’s music and writings but did not depict scenes from his operas, are not discussed in detail. The emphasis is on the diverse effects Wagner had on the works of leading avant-garde artists, varying according to their personalities and stylistic interests. The period beginning in the 1880s, often associated with post-Impressionism, was characterized by a movement away from realist subject matter to more personal or imaginary themes, a general intellectual trend of the fin-de-siècle. Wagner’s remote quasi-historical or mythological subjects fit well with this escapist tendency in the art and culture of the time, in part a return to the Romantic sensibility that was dominant in Wagner’s youth. Wagner’s influence peaked in the period between his death in 1883 and 1900, though a few long-lived artists continued their Wagnerian explorations from this era well into the early twentieth century. There is no “Wagner style” in art, yet Wagner’s pervasive influence is immediately evident in these works. Artists whose works are discussed include Eugène Delacroix, Henri Fantin-Latour, Odilon Redon, Max Klinger, James Ensor, Fernand Khnopff, John Singer Sargent and Aubrey Beardsley, among others. The book features 60 art reproductions, half of them in color.

Book excerpt: In May of 1897, the Exposition Coloniale in Le Palais des Colonies, opened on the site of the Royal Park in Tervuren in conjunction with l'Exposition internationale de Bruxelles held at the same time in the city center. This exhibition satisfied King Leopold II’s longstanding interest in civic projects while the enthralling and exotic displays distracted Belgians from increasing evidence of the “reckless cruelty and greed” of his agents in the Congo. It developed out of the economic and political agendas of the sovereign, and allowed leading artists of the day to break with the past to create a new aesthetic mode for display in a highly visible public arena. The 1897 Exposition Coloniale established a national variant of Art Nouveau, known as le Style Congo. It was rooted in raw materials of the Congo, and incorporated cultural material already circulating throughout Belgium—the fetishes, tools and products collected by Belgian agents, and images reflected in popular publications. In the Salon d’Honneur, fine arts served as outright billboards for ivory, the most quintessential Congolese material. A textile cycle by Hélène de Rudder-du Ménil contrasted the “savagery” of the Congolese people with the civilizing benefits of Belgian intervention. In the adjacent Salle d’Ethnographie, a vast array of cultural material was incorporated into abstract displays that above all served the avant-garde architectural and design program of the Exposition Coloniale. The Exposition Coloniale developed out of the economic and political agendas of the sovereign, the forward-leaning aesthetic interests of his Secretary of State, and an exhibition venue that allowed leading artists of the day to break with the past to create a new aesthetic mode in a highly visible public spectacle. Belgian avant-garde artists incorporated the luxurious materials and aesthetic resources of the Congo into new artistic creations. Under the direction of Paul Hankar, the complex relationship of Belgian avant-garde artists to the imperialism of Leopold II was made manifest at the 1897 Exposition Coloniale. This thesis will examine the intersection of colonial propaganda and the promotion of the Belgian avant-garde objectives at the end of the nineteenth century, through an analysis of ivory sculpture and the textile cycle of Hélène de Rudder-du Ménil in the Salon d’Honneur, and the interior design and furnishings of Paul Hankar in the Salle d’Ethnographie.

This book by Paul Smith views the artist in a new context and explodes some of the myths that have grown up about him. Challenging the assumption that Seurat's work was scientific or that it expressed a serious commitment to anarchism, Smith instead traces the painters involvement with the various factions of the avant-garde and shows that he was perhaps the earliest exponent of Idealism in modern art. Smith studies contemporary interpretations of Impressionism and analyzes how the groups surrounding Seurat constructed meaning from his art. From this investigation he creates a portrait of Seurat as one who was willing to accept, even encourage, interpretations of his art that he may not have intended. Smith shows, for example, that the "scientific" account of Seurat's color first developed by Félix Fénéon actually represents the theory and practice of Pissaro. He examines Seurat's involvement with anarchist critics and concludes that he merely posed as a painter with left-wing sympathies in order to benefit from the publicity these writers gave him. He explains that Seurat was sympathetic to Symbolism from its very inception and that he and his early Symbolist critics developed a theory of his art that was founded on Schopenhauer and Wagner's ideas on art. And he explores the ways that Seurat focused on the musicality of art and on incorporating certain "musical" features in his work. Beautifully illustrated and engagingly written, this book presents a convincing new interpretation of the work of a major artist.
