Download or read book Being No One written by Thomas Metzinger and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2004-08-20 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Thomas Metzinger, no such things as selves exist in the world: nobody ever had or was a self. All that exists are phenomenal selves, as they appear in conscious experience. The phenomenal self, however, is not a thing but an ongoing process; it is the content of a "transparent self-model." In Being No One, Metzinger, a German philosopher, draws strongly on neuroscientific research to present a representationalist and functional analysis of what a consciously experienced first-person perspective actually is. Building a bridge between the humanities and the empirical sciences of the mind, he develops new conceptual toolkits and metaphors; uses case studies of unusual states of mind such as agnosia, neglect, blindsight, and hallucinations; and offers new sets of multilevel constraints for the concept of consciousness. Metzinger's central question is: How exactly does strong, consciously experienced subjectivity emerge out of objective events in the natural world? His epistemic goal is to determine whether conscious experience, in particular the experience of being someone that results from the emergence of a phenomenal self, can be analyzed on subpersonal levels of description. He also asks if and how our Cartesian intuitions that subjective experiences as such can never be reductively explained are themselves ultimately rooted in the deeper representational structure of our conscious minds.

Book Synopsis Being the Other One by : Kate Strohm
Download or read book Being the Other One written by Kate Strohm and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2018-03-27 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When there's a disabled child in the family, how are normally developing siblings affected? According to Kate Strohm, a counselor and health educator, siblings of the disabled face particular emotional challenges that are often overlooked. Able siblings commonly struggle with feelings of isolation, grief, anger, and anxiety—and these and other emotional issues can have lifelong effects. Being the Other One is based on the author's own experience (as a sibling of a sister with cerebral palsy) and on extensive interviews she conducted with siblings of all ages. In clear and compassionate terms, Strohm explores the often secret feelings of siblings and offers valuable strategies for coping with the challenges they face. Being the Other One reveals the difficulties faced by siblings at all stages of life, from early childhood through adulthood, when siblings must often assume responsibility for the care of their disabled brothers and sisters. Though the book looks honestly at the many challenges that siblings face, it is full of encouragement and practical strategies. Strohm emphasizes that when siblings are able to clearly identify and openly express their feelings and concerns—and when parents and health professionals offer the needed support—siblings can thrive. This book includes writing exercises for personal exploration and a substantial resources section listing helpful books, organizations, and websites.
Book Synopsis On Being One's Self by : Sharon Numa
Download or read book On Being One's Self written by Sharon Numa and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-05 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Being One’s Self emerges from discussions in John Steiner’s Workshop and investigates the meanings of self and identity, including the many ways in which the development of personal identity can be subverted, interrogating what can facilitate the development of a reasonably stable identity. The variety of problems that can arise in relation to the development of a unique identity is reflected in rich clinical material that vividly illustrates ‘identities’ felt to be weak, unformed, fluid or brittle, in many cases demonstrating how the sense of self is held together by pathological defences and organisations. The book examines several long-term adult analytic cases, suggesting that a mature personal identity involves not only ‘knowing who one is’ but also the capacity for empathic identification with the experience of others as separate human beings. The question of ‘having’ an identity, or the fear of losing it, is a central concern of individuals, and this volume, which will be of interest to psychoanalysts and psychotherapists alike, considers these issues by looking at the deepest conflicts around self and identity as they emerge and are relived in the transference relationship.
Book Synopsis Travel Like a Millionaire Without Being One by : Sigrid Carter
Download or read book Travel Like a Millionaire Without Being One written by Sigrid Carter and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-21 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sigrid Carter’s life story is worthy of becoming a movie. This was true before she even turned thirty. As an adventurous girl in her twenties, she and three girlfriends from Germany trekked from Colorado to the Pacific coast of Panama, where the group of friends took a canoe into the ocean, got lost, and found themselves surrounded by sharks, just as bad weather set in. Somehow, they survived. The tide carried them to the shores of Columbia, where they spent time living with Indians. Further into their exciting adventure, they assisted biologists researching the Amazon rain forests. The chief of that US expedition later became Sigrid’s husband. A Peruvian filmmaker did, in fact, turn the ordeal into a television movie, but before the girls had the chance to see the movie, they were already in Chile, busy continuing the lives most of us can only imagine.

Book excerpt: An outrageous sortie on a pre-war BSA and two obscure, obsolete Yorkshire-made, single-cylinder Panther motorbikes. Poorly funded, with little planning, the ride depends on good luck, blind loyalty and terminal optimism. The struggle is managed with a youthful naivety. This is a recollection of a youth well-spent. Love and adventure are in the air with every chapter a precarious adventure. "I was parched and scarcely able to breathe but I pushed and shoved and swore, screamed, yelled and cried and somehow I got Penelope up that bloody hill and struggled on until I could see the brick outpost over a sand dune. In the last 20 yards I bogged down again, and so leaving Penelope upright in the sand I staggered in, to the amazement of the soldiers. I beg for water"
