To create a doll I get to do it all: sculpture, industrial design, painting, engraving, mold-making, drawing, metalwork, fashion and jewellery design. I want it all!'

Download or read book Being Doll written by Lisa Pavlik-Malone and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second volume, following Dolls & Clowns & Things, the author once again explores the symbolic relationship between the self and the object. This time, however, the possible fundamental role of cognitive consonance, characterized here as the ability of the mind to integrate opposing ideas into a single expanded understanding of Self, is studied in terms of how it might relate to the following three categories of intuitive experience. One, my physical object, in which consonance or “wholeness” expands one’s understanding of Self when ideas about “youngness” and “oldness” become integrated as part of episodic memories that involve an actual physical (toy) doll. Two, my objectified being, in which consonance takes place when, again, ideas about “youngness” and “oldness” become integrated through the metaphoric objectification of certain points located on the human female body. And three, in which consonance develops as “youngness” and “oldness” ideas become integrated through a doll as a work of art. Within the theoretical framework of each of these three categories, various psychological dynamics which encompass memory, metaphor, and neuroplasticity, are understood to be essential to the molding and shaping of one’s subjective experience of “doll”.
Download or read book Norman written by Stephen Lancaster and published by Llewellyn Worldwide. This book was released on 2018-04-08 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the doll was handed to me, I said he looked like hell. The woman who sold him to me replied that something coming from hell was bound to look like it. From the very first day paranormal investigator Stephen Lancaster brought him home, Norman the Doll raised hell. He caused sudden infestations of rats and spiders. He frightened dogs and put children in trances. He even moved on his own in video surveillance footage. That was just the beginning. Norman takes you on a chilling journey into Stephen's life with a doll that has held the spirit of an unborn child for over fifty years—a haunted doll that still lives in Stephen's house. What began as a curious find at an antique store soon escalated to a supernatural nightmare that could only be eased by locking Norman away in his own room. Praise: "Dedicated readers of horror and internet creepypasta stories will thrill to the mounting evil and the ersatz solution Lancaster and his wife devise to appease Norman. A must-read for fans of the Chucky and Annabelle movies."—Booklist

Book excerpt: Toys--those celebrated childhood cohorts and lead actors in children's imaginative play--have a fantastic history of heroism in fiction. From teddy bears that guard sleeping babies to plastic soldiers and cowboys who lay siege to wooden block castles, toys are often the heroes of the stories children inspire authors to tell. In this collection of new essays, scholars from a great range of disciplines examine fictional toys as protectors of the children they love, as heroes of their own stories, and as champions for the greater good in the writings of A.A. Milne, Hans Christian Andersen, William Joyce, John Lasseter and many others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural Realities of Being offers a dialogue between academic activity and everyday lives by providing an interface between several perspectives on human conduct. Very often, academic pursuits are arcane and obscure for ordinary people, this book will attempt to disentangle these dialogues, lifting everyday discourse and providing a forum for advancing discussion and dialogue. Nandita Chaudhary, S. Anandalakshmy and Jaan Valsiner bring together contributors from the field of cultural psychology to consider how people living within social groups, regardless of how liberal, are guided by collective reality and interconnected with life circumstances. The book discusses experiences and events in the lives of people of Indian cultures covering topics including family, food, pilgrimages, social dynamics and truth, in order to expand the material on human phenomena under the broad frame of cultural psychology. The book builds upon rich cultural traditions present in India, and precisely because of this focus, the book has much larger implications and relevance to the field and aims to orient the academic reader from around the world to viewing India and Indian society as a valuable area for research. Divided into three sections, the book covers: • Social presentation in culture • Representing relations • Children and youth in culture This book includes commentaries from expert academics from outside of India, providing a bridge between academic reality and cultural discourse and throwing fresh light on the everyday events presented in the text. Cultural Realities of Being will be essential reading for those studying Cross Cultural Psychology as well as those interested in social representation and identity.
Book Synopsis A Doll for Throwing by : Mary Jo Bang
Download or read book A Doll for Throwing written by Mary Jo Bang and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exquisite new collection by the award-winning poet Mary Jo Bang, author of The Last Two Seconds and Elegy We were ridiculous—me, with my high jinks and hat. Him, with his boredom and drink. I look back now and see buildings so thick that the life I thought I was making then is nothing but interlocking angles and above them, that blot of gray sky I sometimes saw. Underneath is the edge of what wasn’t known then. When I would go. When I would come back. What I would be when. —from “One Glass Negative” A Doll for Throwing takes its title from the Bauhaus artist Alma Siedhoff-Buscher’s Wurfpuppe, a flexible and durable woven doll that, if thrown, would land with grace. A ventriloquist is also said to “throw” her voice into a doll that rests on the knee. Mary Jo Bang’s prose poems in this fascinating book create a speaker who had been a part of the Bauhaus school in Germany a century ago and who had also seen the school’s collapse when it was shut by the Nazis in 1933. Since this speaker is not a person but only a construct, she is also equally alive in the present and gives voice to the conditions of both time periods: nostalgia, xenophobia, and political extremism. The life of the Bauhaus photographer Lucia Moholy echoes across these poems—the end of her marriage, the loss of her negatives, and her effort to continue to make work and be known for having made it.
