Book excerpt: The internationally bestselling author of Who Cooked the Last Supper? presents a wickedly witty and very current history of the extraordinary female rebels, reactionaries, and trailblazers who left their mark on history from the French Revolution up to the present day. Now is the time for a new women’s history—for the famous, infamous, and unsung women to get their due—from the Enlightenment to the #MeToo movement. Recording the important milestones in the birth of the modern feminist movement and the rise of women into greater social, economic, and political power, Miles takes us through through a colorful pageant of astonishing women, from heads of state like Empress Cixi, Eugenia Charles, Indira Gandhi, Jacinda Ardern, and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to political rainmakers Kate Sheppard, Carrie Chapman Catt, Anna Stout, Dorothy Height, Shirley Chisholm, Winnie Mandela, STEM powerhouses Jocelyn Bell Burnell, Rosalind Franklin, Sophia Kovalevskaya, Marie Curie, and Ada Lovelace, revolutionaries Olympe de Gouges, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Patyegarang, and writer/intellectuals Mary Wollstonecraft, Simon de Beauvoir, Elaine Morgan, and Germaine Greer. Women in the arts, women in sports, women in business, women in religion, women in politics—this is a one-stop roundup of the tremendous progress women have made in the modern era. A testimony to how women have persisted—and excelled—this is a smart and stylish popular history for all readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Women in the Modern World, noted feminist and sociologist Mirra Komarovsky begins with a consideration of biology. Reflecting on these now-familiar arguments that the natural biological differences between women and men dictate different social roles, Komarovsky demolishes these arguments by carefully reviewing studies that find sex differences in cognitive abilities, achievement, and psychological predispositions. In successive chapters, Komarovsky explores how differential socialization produces the differences that we think we observe between women and men, and how gender inequality disfigures the lives of women, men, and the relationships between them. One chapter examines how it plays out among college students at Barnard in the first college generation after the Second World War. Many of these bright and ambitious women feel trapped between their talents and the constraints of feminine domesticity mapped out for them by social expectations. Successive chapters examine the costs of choosing either alternative. Full-time homemakers feel, at best, overworked and undervalued, and at worst resentful and bitter. Many regret the "painful reorganization of life," and long, instead "for the relinquished occupation." It is this longing, she argues that leads so many women to "flit from one evanescent interest to another, arriving at late or middle age without anything that would given meaning or continuity to their lives."

Book excerpt: 1913 - Suffragette throws herself under the King's horse. 1969 - Feminists storm Miss World. NOW - Caitlin Moran rewrites The Female Eunuch from a bar stool and demands to know why pants are getting smaller. There's never been a better time to be a woman: we have the vote and the Pill, and we haven't been burnt as witches since 1727. However, a few nagging questions do remain... Why are we supposed to get Brazilians? Should you get Botox? Do men secretly hate us? What should you call your vagina? Why does your bra hurt? And why does everyone ask you when you're going to have a baby? Part memoir, part rant, Caitlin Moran answers these questions and more in How To Be A Woman - following her from her terrible 13th birthday ('I am 13 stone, have no friends, and boys throw gravel at me when they see me') through adolescence, the workplace, strip-clubs, love, fat, abortion, TopShop, motherhood and beyond.

Book excerpt: Outspoken, Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times Op-Ed columnist Maureen Dowd tackles the hot-button topic of gender politics in this “funny, biting, and incisive take on women's place in American society today” (Library Journal). Are men afraid of smart, successful women? Why did feminism fizzle? Why are so many of today’s women freezing their faces and emotions in an orgy of plasticity? Is “having it all” just a cruel hoax? In this witty and wide-ranging book, Maureen Dowd looks at the state of the sexual union, raising bold questions and examining everything from economics and presidential politics to pop culture and the “why?” of the Y chromosome. In our ever-changing culture where locker room talk has become the talk of the town, Are Men Necessary? will intrigue Dowd's devoted readers—and anyone trying to sort out the chaos that occurs when sexes collide. Book excerpt: This is the first essay collection to examine the relation between text and gender in Spain from a broad geographical, social and cultural perspective covering more than 300 years. The contributors examine women and the construction of gender thematically, dealing with the areas of politics, law, religion, sexuality, literature and economics, and in a variety of social categories, from Christians and Moriscas, queens and merchants, peasants and visionaries, heretics and madwomen. The essays cover different regions in the Spanish monarchy, including Andalusia, Aragon, Castile, Catalonia, Valencia and Spanish America, from the fifteenth century through to the eighteenth century. Women, Texts and Authority in Early Modern Spain focuses on two central themes: gender relations in the shaping of family and community life, and women's authority in spheres of power. The representation of women in a variety of texts such as poetry, court cases, or even account books illustrate the multifaceted world in which women lived, constantly choosing and negotiating their identities. The appeal of this collection is not limited to scholars of Spanish history and literature; it is deliberately designed to address the issue of how gender relations were constructed in the formation of modern society, and therefore will be of interest to scholars of women's and gender history generally. Because of the emphasis on how this construction occurs in texts, the collection will also be attractive to scholars interested in literary studies and/or print culture.

Book excerpt: This work contains a rich deposit of instruction in wisdom and virtue of a mature godly woman. Every girl and young woman wants to grow up to be what she believes to be "a real woman" - this is natural and by design. And whether clearly stated or implied, every culture upholds a model or standard of what it means to be a "real women." Nowhere is this model or standard communicated more clearly and consistently than through the medium of television, film, and pop music. The message of our culture is clear. A real woman is a woman who possesses the power to garner the attention, desire, and admiration of men by just the right display of her physical assets, or sexiness; she calls her own shots always, and is free from the need to live in healthy inter-dependence with others or submission to any authority; she is free from the old-fashioned bondage of moral standards of sexual purity and therefore does whatever feels right for her; she possesses a sharp tongue and prides herself on her ability to give anyone who rubs her the wrong way, "a piece of her mind"; her self-worth is directly related to her net-worth and material possessions; and like her male counter-part, she who has the most toys wins. In the wake of this modern standard of womanhood are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of younger and now older women who live with emotional and physical brokenness, guilt, disappointment, heartache, and shame, having been misled by the message of our modern culture. Indeed, "there is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. - (Proverbs 16:25, NIV)" Against the message of modern culture lies the enduring wisdom of the scriptures that "Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. - (Proverbs 31:30, NIV)" The Scriptures challenge our modern culture's idea of womanhood and reveal that real womanhood, and real power is rooted in virtue, humility, and self-control. The fact that Paul charged the mature women to instruct the young women is evidence that the younger women would not instinctively know how to govern their lives as it pertains to spirituality, domestic responsibility, sexuality, marriage, and friendship (Titus 2:3-5). Young woman do not obtain these life-lessons automatically; young girls will not become wise women simply because they grow older. Indeed, young women that are un-taught grow up to become "silly and weak-natured and spiritually dwarfed women... - (II Timothy 3:6, Amplified)" who are easily deceived and taken advantage of in life by men, or anyone for that matter, with evil intentions. If godly women do not intentionally disciple young girls and young women in what it means to be a woman, then television, film, and pop music will. The astounding statistics of sexually transmitted diseases, teenage suicides, un-wanted pregnancies, abortions, high-school drop outs, and hopeless and directionless young women is evidence that our culture's School of Womanhood is not producing the kind of future we would desire for the young women in our lives. What is needed in this hour, and for the sake of the young girls and young women of our generation and the generation to come, is to raise, or more accurately, to re-establish the standard of what it means to be a woman. This book goes a long way in doing just that and it will bless the lives of the young women who take hold to its instruction.

Book excerpt: An updated edition of the Sunday Times Bestseller Britain's best-known classicist Mary Beard, is also a committed and vocal feminist. With wry wit, she revisits the gender agenda and shows how history has treated powerful women. Her examples range from the classical world to the modern day, from Medusa and Athena to Theresa May and Hillary Clinton. Beard explores the cultural underpinnings of misogyny, considering the public voice of women, our cultural assumptions about women's relationship with power, and how powerful women resist being packaged into a male template. A year on since the advent of #metoo, Beard looks at how the discussions have moved on during this time, and how that intersects with issues of rape and consent, and the stories men tell themselves to support their actions. In trademark Beardian style, using examples ancient and modern, Beard argues, 'it's time for change - and now!' From the author of international bestseller SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome.

Book excerpt: Women Mystics Confront the Modern World situates the female mystical tradition within the context of the epistemological shift which affected religious sentiments and the perception of the self at the dawn of the modern world. Anchored in a comprehensive knowledge of the religious history of seventeenth-century France, this book offers a vivid account of the fascinating lives and work of two exceptional women. Marie de l'Incarnation (1599-1672) and Madame Guyon (1648-1717) continue a literary and spiritual tradition that had begun in the thirteenth century. Yet, because they were at a crucial point in the history of Western mysticism, when this movement was at once at its apogee and in the first stages of decline, their writings show indications of a changing mentality. These transformations shed light on the social significance of female mysticism in the Western tradition. The opportunities the two women seized or shunned highlight their maneuvering for validation and autonomy. But their choices also highlight many contradictions, compromises, and limits imposed upon their self-expression. At the confluence of French and American scholarship on mysticism, this work joins these two schools of thought by introducing gender as a viable category of inquiry into the one and by tempering the overly-optimistic interpretation of female mysticism of the other.
