Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luther Rice was born on a small farm in Northborough, MA. He underwent a powerful religious conversion as a teenager in a time when spiritual revival was sweeping across New England. Sensing a call to missions, he and Adoniram Judson traveled to India with the Congregational mission agency. While on the ship during the long voyage, his study of Scripture led him to embrace a Baptist view of baptism. He was baptized by immersion upon reaching India and felt compelled to resign as a Congregationalist missionary since he could no longer represent their theology in good faith. He returned to America where he rallied Baptist churches to support missionaries. Though his intention was to return to the mission field, that never happened. Instead, he traveled the country extensively, preaching on evangelism and missions and encouraging Baptists to organize themselves more formally so that missions could be supported more effectively. Many listened to his pleas, and Baptist mission societies sprang up around the nation. He also felt the need to train future pastors and missionaries, so he helped establish Baptist colleges across the nation. Not everyone agreed with his aggressive fundraising efforts or his constant promoting of missionary and educational efforts. Many accused him of only caring about money. But he gave 100 percent of himself to the Lord's work, having never married. He died while on a preaching tour of South Carolina. His legacy lives on today in the colleges he helped found, in numerous Baptist mission boards that trace their roots to his ministry, and in the Luther Rice Lodge, a training facility in Northborough, MA that occupies what was once the Rice family home, barn, and blacksmith shop. All proceeds from the sale of this book support the ministry of the Luther Rice Lodge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps no other group of people has been as much formed by biblical texts and tropes as African Americans. From literature and the arts to popular culture and everyday life, the Bible courses through black society and culture like blood through veins. Despite the enormous recent interest in African American religion, relatively little attention has been paid to the diversity of ways in which African Americans have utilized the Bible.African Americans and the Bibleis the fruit of a four-year collaborative research project directed by Vincent L. Wimbush and funded by the Lilly Endowment. It brings together scholars and experts (sixty-eight in all) from a wide range of academic and artistic fields and disciplines--including ethnography, cultural history, and biblical studies as well as art, music, film, dance, drama, and literature. The focus is on the interaction between the people known as African Americans and that complex of visions, rhetorics, and ideologies known as the Bible. As such, the book is less about the meaning(s) of the Bible than about the Bible and meaning(s), less about the world(s) of the Bible than about how worlds and the Bible interact--in short, about how a text constructs a people and a people constructs a text. It is about a particular sociocultural formation but also about the dynamics that obtain in the interrelation between any group of people and sacred texts in general. ThusAfrican Americans and the Bibleprovides an exemplum of sociocultural formation and a critical lens through which the process of sociocultural formation can be viewed.

Book excerpt: The sagas of Jacob and his sons are presented in the biblical book of Genesis in a series of sometimes seemingly unrelated episodes. In this book, the author undertakes to show that these episodes are all intimately connected and were selected to illustrate the problems faced by Jacob in coping with the sibling rivalries among his dozen sons and welding them into a collective body capable of giving birth to a nation. The focus in Jacob and His Sons is on what the biblical text is telling us, explicitly as well as implicitly, about the world in which they lived and how the historical conditions came into being for them ultimately to become transformed into a nation. In the struggle to comprehend the biblical text, the author has consulted a wide range of commentaries and studies written over a period of some two millennia that have sought to understand the biblical texts from a wide variety of perspectives, many of which are presented for the reader's consideration, including many sources inaccessible to those without a working knowledge of Hebrew.

Book excerpt: God Meant It For Good traces the stages of Joseph's life as he matures from a young and impetuous man to one who is prepared to leave his own vindication with God. It presents a case study in total forgiveness exemplified by Joseph's reconciliation with his brothers and applies it to Christian living today. This classic book will challenge, provoke, transform and excite, as the God who taught Joseph to love, forgive and serve, is the God who meant it for good. The God Meant it for Good Workbook and Group Facilitator’s Guide will challenge Bible study groups, home groups, and Sunday school classes to explore deeper levels of insight and application into this case study in total forgiveness. This user-friendly study includes twelve weeks of engaging group discussion prompts, activities, prayer points, and weekly challenges. Fall deeper into the care of the God who meant it for good. "If I could have only one book with the exception of the Bible. I would choose God Meant it for God by R.T. Kendall... If you are going through something you don't understand, perhaps your dreams have been shattered or you have been falsely accused, this book is 'must' reading." —Jim Bakker
