Book excerpt: The objectives of this investigation were to study the strength and behavior of slowly (statically) loaded reinforced concrete slab-column connections and to determine the effect of rapid (dynamic) loading on the strength and behavior by comparison with the static test results. Nineteen full-scale models of a connection and adjoining slab area, consisting of a simply supported slab 84 or 94 inches square and 6-1/2 inches thick loaded concentrically on a 10- or 20-inch-square stub column at the center of the slab, were tested. The main variables were the amounts of reinforcement in the slab (p = 0.75 and 1.50 percent), the column size, and the loading speed. Eight specimens were loaded to failure statically, two were subjected to a very rapidly applied load of short duration, and nine were loaded to failure by a rapidly applied load with a rise time chosen to represent the conditions in a blast-loaded structure. The static test results are compared with 12 shear strength prediction methods. Differences between the mechanism of shear failure in slabs and beams are examined. (Author).

Book excerpt: Bond of reinforcement has a major influence on the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Even though bond has been extensively studied over the past decades, there are still a number of knowledge gaps requiring investigation. This dissertation presents three studies related to the basic bond behavior of reinforcement and the influence of bond-slip on the seismic response of RC columns. The first investigation characterizes the bond behavior of iron-based shape-memory alloy (Fe-SMA) bars. Fe-SMA reinforcement provides new opportunities for design and strengthening of concrete structures thanks to their shape memory effect. However, there is currently little data on its bond performance. Experiments were conducted to study the bond-slip behavior of ribbed Fe-SMA bars embedded in concrete specimens with different levels of passive confinement. Fe-SMA bars presented a similar bond performance as conventional reinforcement, but their bond strength was reduced with heat activation in low-confined specimens. An analytical model is also proposed to calculate the transfer length of Fe-SMA bars in prestressing applications. The second investigation proposes nonlinear finite element models to accurately simulate the cyclic response of RC columns, including the effect of bond-slip. Concrete is modeled using a triaxial constitutive model recently proposed in the literature. A commonly used uniaxial steel model is modified to account for low-cycle fatigue rupture using a phenomenological criterion. The bond-slip behavior of bars is modeled using a zero-thickness interface element and a bond stress-slip law that predicts bond deterioration caused by generalized slip demands, tensile yielding of steel, and concrete damage. The proposed models accurately predict the cyclic response and failure of previously tested column components. The third investigation focuses on the effects of strain penetration and bond modification on the lateral response of RC columns. Two large-scale column specimens were tested under cyclic loading. One specimen had conventional reinforcement details, while the other had headed bars that were partially debonded along the footing to alleviate strain concentrations. Both specimens formed plastic hinges and failed due to rupture of longitudinal bars. The specimen with partial debonding presented less damage and a larger deformation capacity. Experimental data indicated that the debonding strategy reduced peak tensile strains, and increased bar slip and fixed-end rotations. However, it also reduced the lateral load resistance of the column. Companion finite element analyses have indicated that the reduction in peak lateral strength is caused by lower steel stress demands when concrete cover fails

Several applications of fibrous composites, functionally graded materials, laminated composites, nano-structured reinforcements, morphing structures, can be found in many engineering fields, such as aerospace, mechanical, naval and civil engineering. The necessity of lightweight structures, smart and adaptive systems, high-level strength, have led both the academic research and the manufacturing development to a recurring employment of these materials. Many journal papers and technical notes have been published extensively over the last seventy years in international scientific journals of different engineering fields. For this reason, the establishment of this second edition of Mechanics of Composites International Conference has appeared appropriate to continue what has been begun during the first edition occurred in 2014 at Stony Brook University (USA). MECHCOMP wants to be an occasion for many researchers from each part of the globe to meet and discuss about the recent advancements regarding the use of composite structures. As a proof of this event, which has taken place in Porto (Portugal), selected plenary and key-note lectures have been collected in the present book.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Prior studies have shown that many reinforced concrete buildings located in seismically active regions do not have the necessary lateral strength and ductility to perform adequately in earthquakes. In particular, it has been noted that reinforced concrete columns with poor transverse reinforcement are susceptible to shear failure and loss of axial capacity under cyclic lateral loads. The research reported here is focused on modeling the lateral deformation behavior of lightly reinforced concrete columns subjected to lateral loads. Lateral deformations in a column are comprised of three parts: flexural, reinforcement slip, and shear deformations. The monotonic response for each of these deformations was modeled separately. Flexural deformations were modeled using moment-curvature analysis and a plastic hinge model. A review of existing models for reinforcement slip was completed, and an existing model was modified based on experimental data and a parametric study. A comparison of models showed that the proposed slip model performs well in terms of accuracy and efficiency. A shear model was adopted from a previous study, and combined with an available computer program to predict shear behavior in this study. These three component models were found to predict the lateral response envelopes acceptably well for several sets of experimental data. A model for the overall lateral force-deformation relationship of reinforced concrete columns was created by combining the effects of each of the component models. The behavior of a column is classified into one of five categories based on a comparison of the shear, yield, and flexural strengths. The expected behavior in each category determines rules that govern the combination of the deformation components. For columns that are susceptible to shear failure after the onset of flexural failure, the response envelope is modified based on an available shear capacity model. An axial capacity model is also employed for the prediction of ultimate deformations. The proposed model was compared with experimental data from 37 column tests by various researchers. It was found that the classification system employed in the model was successful in representing column behavior. Overall, the model did a reasonable job of predicting the lateral response envelope for the columns in the test database. The model predicted the peak lateral strength well, and successfully represented the onset of shear failure in columns initially failing in flexure.
