Abstract: The advantages of using cold-formed steel are high strength-to-weight ratio, flexibility in fabricating different cross-section shapes, easy for construction and so on. Cold-formed steel sheets are usually manufactured into open sectional profiles by cold-rolling and brake-pressing methods. Doubly symmetric built-up sections, with the advantage of having larger torsional rigidity compared to traditional singly symmetric open sections, have great potential to extend the application of cold-formed steel to structural members with larger scale. The doubly symmetric built-up open and closed sections can be made by connecting two channel sections using self-tapping screws, which are also convenient for industrialized production. In this study, the structural performance of cold-formed steel built-up section beams with intermediate stiffeners and built-up section beams with web perforations was examined through experimental and numerical investigations. The impact of different screw arrangements on the moment capacities of built-up section beams was also studied. A total of 113 beam tests that include simply supported beam tests of 16 pairs of channel sections with stiffened webs, 19 built-up sections with intermediate stiffeners, 43 built-up sections with web perforations, as well as 35 built-up sections with different screw arrangements was conducted. The material properties of the test specimens were also obtained by tensile coupon tests. The main objective of the experimental investigation is to obtain the section moment capacities and understand the structural behaviour of the built-up sections under bending. Finite element (FE) models of the beam specimens were also developed and numerical analysis that includes material nonlinearity, geometric nonlinearity and contact nonlinearity (for built-up section beams only) was performed and the results were verified against the test results. The validated FE models were employed for extensive parametric studies of 382 numerical simulations that include 101 channel sections with stiffened webs, 113 built-up sections with intermediate stiffeners, 80 built-up sections with web perforations, as well as 88 built-up sections having different screw arrangements. A wide range of section slenderness was considered in the built-up sections and different failure modes of beams were investigated. Therefore, a comprehensive study on the influence of stiffener features, different sizes of web holes, and various screw arrangements on the structural performance of cold-formed steel built-up section beams was carried out. The results obtained from the experimental and numerical studies were employed for evaluating the design rules of cold-formed steel built-up section beams. It should be mentioned that the existing direct strength method (DSM) for cold-formed steel members does not cover the design of built-up section beams. Hence, suitable design rules based on DSM have been proposed for cold-formed steel built-up section beams with intermediate stiffeners and built-up section beams with web perforations under bending. The design equations for considering the screw spacings of built-up closed section beams have also proposed. Furthermore, the suitability of the modified design rules, as well as the existing DSM for cold-formed steel built-up section beams was also evaluated through a reliability analysis. In cold-formed steel design there are several applications where built-up box girders are used to resist load induced in a structure when a single section is not sufficient to carry the design load. The cold-formed steel box girders may be subjected to eccentric loading when the web of one of the sections receives the load and transfers it through the connection to another section. There may be an unequal distribution of load in built-up girder assemblies loaded from one side. In the current North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members (CSA-S136-01, 2001), there is no guideline or design equation to calculate the flexural capacity of this type of section. AISI cold-formed steel framing design guide (2002) has recommended that the moment of resistance and inertia of the built-up section are the simple addition of the component parts, based on deflection compatibility of the two sections. However, this design approximation has not been justified by any experimental or numerical study. Very little information was found in literature about this topic. The objective of this study is the investigation of the flexural behaviour of built-up box girders assembled from cold-formed stud and track sections when subjected to eccentric loading. Finite element analysis is conducted for this purpose, being much more economical than expensive experimental testing. Detailed parametric studies are carried out to identify the factors affecting the flexural capacity of built-up cold-formed steel sections. The parametric results are used to develop a design equation for calculating the flexural capacity of built-up cold-formed steel sections.

The material properties of high strength steel usually cannot be simply represented by traditional mild steel stress-strain curves, thus the behaviour of high strength steel members are generally different from those for mild steel products. Tubular members have great potential in structural engineering due to their aesthetic appearance and strong resistance against torsional buckling. Cold-formed steel tubular sections are preferred in some applications as they are easier and less energy consuming to fabricate when compared to hot-rolled steel and built-up steel sections. The aims of this study are to investigate experimentally and numerically the behaviour of cold-formed high strength tubular structural members, and develop design guidance for these products. The experimental programme in this study included 66 tensile coupon tests, residual stress measurements on 3 sections, 25 stub column tests, 25 beam tests, 32 long beam-column tests and 83 short beam-column tests. The tubular sections consisted of 9 square hollow sections, 2 rectangular hollow sections and 6 circular hollow sections. The specimens were categorised into three series according to their nominal yield stresses: H-series (700 MPa), V-series (900 MPa) and S-series (1100 MPa). The stub columns were tested in fixed-ended boundary conditions. The behaviour of beams was investigated through four-point bending tests. The beam-columns were tested between a set of knife edges with equal load eccentricities at both ends, which provided single curvature and uniform end moment to the specimens. Finite element models were developed and validated against experiments using Abaqus software. The influences of material properties, residual stresses, local and global geometric imperfections and other input factors were analysed. The results showed that the models are capable of replicating the key test results, load-deformation histories and failure modes of the specimens. Upon validation of finite element models, a comprehensive parametric study programme was carried out to supplement the experimental data. The parametric study consisted of 321 stub columns, 423 beams and 540 beam-columns. The test and finite element data were further used to evaluate the codified design rules from the current American, Australian/New Zealand and European design codes for steel structures. The Direct Strength Method was also evaluated for the cold-formed high strength steel tubular members in this study. In the comparison, the compactness criteria for tubular sections were examined and the predicted design strengths were also compared to the test and finite element results. Improved design recommendations are given accordingly. Reliability analysis were performed for codified and proposed design rules. Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled BEHAVIOUR OF HIGH STRENGTH STEEL COLUMNS AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES Submitted by Ju Chen for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in April 2007 In this study, the structural behaviour of high strength steel columns at elevated temperatures is investigated. The current fire resistant design rules for steel columns in most of the specifications are generally based on the investigation of hot-rolled steel having normal strength. Although similarities between the conventional normal strength and high strength steel exist, there is sufficient diversity in their mechanical properties for different treatments in design. Therefore, there is a need to develop the design rules of high strength steel columns at elevated temperatures. Material properties play an important role in the performance of steel structural members. Hence, an extensive material test program was first performed on high strength steel at elevated temperatures. The high strength steel includes cold-formed steel, stainless steel as well as quenched and tempered carbon steel. Structural carbon steel having normal strength was also tested for comparison. The mechanical properties and stress-strain curves of the tested steel were obtained and compared with predictions from the American, Australian, British and European specifications. In addition, equations predicting the mechanical properties and stress-strain curve model for the tested materials at elevated temperatures were proposed. The column behaviour of cold-formed steel built-up closed sections with intermediate web stiffeners at normal room temperature was investigated. The test results were compared with the design strengths obtained using the direct strength method. An accurate and reliable finite element model of cold-formed steel built-up columns was developed and verified against the test results. A parametric study was carried out using the verified finite element model. Design rules for cold-formed steel built-up closed section columns at normal room and elevated temperatures modified from the direct strength method were proposed. The behaviour of cold-formed steel lipped channel columns at elevated temperatures has been investigated using finite element method. The suitability of the effective width method and direct strength method for cold-formed steel lipped channel columns at elevated temperatures was evaluated. The behaviour of quenched and tempered high strength carbon steel columns at elevated temperatures was also investigated. The finite element analysis results were compared with the design strengths using the American, Australian and European specifications. Generally, it is shown that the effective width method and direct strength method using the reduced material properties conservatively predicted the column strengths.
