Book excerpt: The present study evaluates the effects of a behavioral skills training package (BST) on training adult literacy tutors to implement the steps of BST when teaching parents with low literacy. Four adult literacy tutors participated in the study along with one parent with low literacy. The primary dependent variable was the percentage of steps of the BST package implemented correctly during tutor training probe measures. Secondary measures were taken on the parent's performance of each step of the literacy activities on which they were trained. In baseline, all tutors were provided with instructions for performing two literacy activities and tutors demonstrated how they would train each literacy activity with a parent or confederate researcher at their literacy site. During the BST session, tutors were trained on how to implement the BST package when training a parent on performing an Interactive Read Aloud literacy activity. Following the BST session, tutors again demonstrated how they would train each literacy activity as a maintenance measure. Their performance was probed in session with a parent when possible. Results suggested that following the BST session, tutor performance improved in implementing the steps of the BST package with parents and parent confederates during maintenance probes. Acceptability measures showed high approval ratings with the training package. Results are discussed with regard to practical considerations when training various populations.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Behavioral skills training (BST) has been employed within many different populations to effect change in the way of reduction or acquisition of behaviors. For this study, a multiple-baseline across participants and modified ABAB design were employed. Analogue assessments and in-situ probes were conducted with three teachers following an initial training which occurred several months previously. These pre-assessments were followed by a separate booster training session for each individual teacher which lasted three and a half hours or less. Following the training, analogue and in-situ post assessments were conducted with each teacher. The independent variable was the booster training and the dependent variable was the percentage of steps performed correctly within each of the tools across assessments. Results showed the booster training to be effective in raising teacher scores as measures of performance of skills learned in the training to higher than those before the training. Some were even higher than the posttraining scores of the initial training. These results suggest that a booster training was effective in helping to raise scores following many months following the initial training.

Book excerpt: Abstract Behavior Skills Training (BST) typically consists of an initial informational component presented to the learners either vocally, through a handout, presentation, or both. Results from the active student responding literature indicates these methods as the least effective means of conveying important information to learners. This study sought to utilize an alternative instructional component, fluency training, and to evaluate if any effects are observed on implementation of the behavior chain of Discrete Trial Training (DTT). Teacher's had previous training and experience on implementing DTT prior to this study--however, all teachers implemented strategies with low integrity. Teachers were trained to fluent levels on verbally stating the component steps of DTT and were then observed during probe sessions to evaluate percentage of steps implemented correctly. The probes indicate an initial improvement, but decreases over time that are consistent with results on other passive in-service trainings. Teachers then took part in a single session of Modeling, Role-Play, and Feedback. Results suggest that while fluency training had an impact on participants' verbal performance on discrete trial information, and affected overt performance during subsequent probes, the effects were small and transient. Performance improved only after training on the components of BST and additional training had been completed in-situ.

Few studies have conducted the trainings in classroom environments to increase the positive interactions between teachers and their students. Numerous studies have demonstrated the usefulness of behavioral skills training in teaching a wide variety of behavioral skills; however, relatively few of them have shown generalization to their natural environment and maintenance of appropriate responding following the training. Methods of prompting following the initial trainings that have been utilized are often quite intrusive especially when it interrupts the flow of the participants' natural environment. For this study, a multiple-baseline ABC across participants design was utilized to assess the combination of behavioral skills training to teach "Tools" for responding to child behavior with a less intrusive method of prompting in the form of visual prompts that are embedded into the training to maintain the skills acquired following the training.

Book excerpt: An initial group study investigated the relationship between pre-existing computer-use skills and acquisition following computer-based instruction (CBI) in the form of a computer-based behavior skills training (BST). Findings suggest that when learning a software skill, participants’ computer skills prior to the training did correlate with observed learning measures; most participants did demonstrate improvement following training, but greater improvement was observed in those with better computer skills. However, due to limitations resulting from both an inability to complete within-subject comparisons and participants being trained on only one skill, conclusions could not be drawn. An additional study investigates the correlation between pre-existing skills and acquisition while also directly comparing training delivery methods (live versus CBI) for different types of skills being taught (software and practical/hands-on). This study taught each participant four skills, two via computer-based BST (one software skill and one practical skill) and two via in-person BST (also one software skill and one practical skill). Results indicate that both in-person and computer-based BST are effective training modalities across multiple tasks. Additionally, correlations are observed between computer proficiency and learning gains when the skills are learned via computer-based training. This could lead to conclusions regarding the effectiveness of CBI versus more traditional training methods and the skills an individual should demonstrate if he or she is expected to learn effectively from CBI. Implications for the ongoing utilization of computer-based training in organization are discussed.
