Book excerpt: Pile foundations are designed by vertical piles; however, sometimes batter piles are considered because of their bending rigidity. In general, batter piles are known to have more lateral resistance than the vertical piles, but limited research has been conducted on them because of application limitations and the fact that interpreting construction equipment is difficult. Additionally, field application cases are rarely used for off-shore plants in which lateral loads have a great effect on the foundations of wind power structures. In a single pile, the interaction behavior of a subgrade-pile is so complicated that accurate predictions are impossible. This study is designed to aid in understanding the behavioral characteristics of group batter piles on which a lateral load acts through a model test. The experiments were conducted with 22 single batter piles and 48 group batter piles, and the results showed that the lateral resistance increased as the tilt angle rose. Furthermore, the lateral resistance was at its peak when the lateral loading angle was 60°, and the resistance of the front pile was greater than that of the rear pile. The bending moment, according to the angle of tilt, changed as the group of piles generally increased and as the angle of tilt rose for both the front and rear piles. The action position of the maximum bending moment tends to go up toward the upper part of the piles as the angle of tilt rises for the front and rear piles.

Book excerpt: A procedure for the three-dimensional analysis of pile groups subject to horizontal and vertical forces and moments which accounts for batter piles, the flexural resistance of the piles, and the lateral resistance of the surrounding soil is discussed. Due to the extensive amount of computational effort required to analyze a pile group, the analysis was programmed for a digital computer. Since many of the factors involved in the design of pile foundations are not known with great accuracy, the use of the digital computer permits the esigner to examine the effect of variations in various design parameters. This paper presents results obtained from analyzing several pile group arrangements for various soil and loading conditions. The results obtained from the analysis include the axial loads, moments, stresses, and deflections for individual piles, as well as for the group. The numerical results obtained from analyzing various illustrative examples show the significant influence that the following factors have on the loads that are introduced in the various individual piles: (a) the arrangement of the individual piles within the group, (b) the end condition as reflected by the connection between the pile cap and the piles, (c) the lateral resistance of the surrounding soil, and (d) the flexural resistance of the pile. Comparison with field and laboratory tests indicates that the behavior of pile groups predicted by the analysis is in qualitative agreement with observed behavior. This paper demonstrates that it is possible to use the pile group analysis presented as a practical method for solving design problems. The ability to evaluate variations in design parameters should lead to safer and more economical designs.

Book excerpt: Previous analyses of the ultimate resistance and disPLments of rigid piles under lateral loads and moments have been extended to the general case of eccentric and inclined loads on flexible piles by using the concept of effective embedment depths of equivalent rigid piles. Recent research on the behaviour of large model tests on instrumented rigid and flexible piles under eccentric and inclined loads in sand, clay, and layered soil is summarized. Reasonable agreement is found between observed and predicted behaviour. The proposed mthod of analysis is also supported by comparison with the results of many field case records of single piles and large pile groups under lateral loads in different types of soils.

Book excerpt: It is the aim of this research work is to investigate and to assess quatitatively as well as quantitatively the bearing behaviour of pile groups subjected to cyclic lateral loading. In this context, the influences of different boundary conditions, in particular the soil properties and the pile group geometry are to be analysed experimentally and numerically. Based on a brief literature review in chapter 2, model tests (centrifuge and small-scale at 1g) and numerical investigations have been carried out to contribute to a better understanding of the cyclic behaviour of pile groups. Chapter 3 describes the test procedure and summarises the results of centrifuge tests, which have been carried out at the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems (COFS) in Perth, Australia. Further investigations have been carried out by means of smallscale model tests at 1g in the testing facilities at the University of Kassel, Germany, with the results as summarised in chapter 4. A comparison of individual results of both test series is provided in chapter 5. The numerical studies in chapter 6 have been carried out in order to analyse the general ability of numerical simulations to calculate the response of pile groups to cyclic lateral loading. Based on the previously derived results, chapter 7 provides equations that can be applied to estimate the cyclic accumulation of lateral displacements of pile groups as well as the cyclic changes of the load distribution within pile groups.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's current policy restricts the lateral loading of battered piles to a 3.5 to 1 vertical to horizontal load ratio. Accompanying this is the assumption that all lateral force is resisted by battered piles and conversely, none of the lateral force is resisted by vertical piles. These two decisions result in the need for additional piles and increased footing sizes, creating large total foundations. The purpose of this study is to analyze these two specifications in an attempt to reduce the required foundation size. Traditional Euler beam theory is studied to determine the behavior of battered and plumb piles, but is complicated due to nonlinear soil-pile interaction. As a result, the p-y method for relating pile deflection to soil resistance was used to predict pile behavior under the influence of varying load ratios in three different types of soils. Because the p-y method is an iterative process, the computer program Lpile was utilized to create the different curves based on individual soil and pile properties. The curves were then used to develop multi-linear spring constants that can effectively represent the soil in a structural analysis model. Piles at three different batters in three types of soil were analyzed under varying load ratios to determine the effects on pile deflection and bending moment. The results indicate that pile behavior is governed by the beam-column interaction equation and suggests that the actual lateral loads acting on the pile play a much more significant role in pile behavior than load ratios. In addition, results indicate that PennDOT's assumption that all lateral force is resisted by battered piles is extremely conservative and plumb piles are shown to have significant lateral resistance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method previously presented by the author (in ASTM STP 154) is generalized to encompass soils having nonlinear p-y characteristics. This results in a method that can handle, but is not restricted to, pile-soil systems having (1) piles greater than 9 m (30 ft) in length having free, fixed, or partially fixed heads, and any cross-sectional shape and length relationship, for example, constant, tapered, or stepped, and of any materials or combination of materials; (2) soils of any variation with depth, whether homogeneous, stratified, or combinations thereof, and having p-y characteristics of any nature; (3) ability to qualitatively and quantitatively predict behavior and stresses under static, fluctuating, and repetitive lateral loadings, or where larger emergency loads can be interspersed between normal loads. Ways are suggested for dealing with each of these factors. In addition, a method is proposed for obtaining the effective soil constant at a given site for a range of lateral loads, using empirical test data from free-head piles of the same characteristics subjected to lateral loads. The method is validated by use on previously published data of a comprehensive series of tests on free-head piles by Assadeh and Davison (Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundation Division, Proceedings of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Volume 96, No. SM5, Sept. 1970, pp. 1583-1603). Using the soil constants resulted in computed load-deflection curves closely approximating actual data. These constants are used in turn to compute the expected deflections and pile stress of those same piles under fixed-head conditions.
