Book excerpt: Serviceability failures of concrete structures involving excessive cracking or deflection are relatively common, even in structures that comply with code requirements. This is often as a result of a failure to adequately account for the time-dependent deformations of concrete in the design of the structure. The serviceability provisions embodied in

Book excerpt: Completely revised to reflect the new ACI 318-08 Building Code and International Building Code, IBC 2009, this popular book offers a unique approach to examining the design of prestressed concrete members in a logical, step-by-step trial and adjustment procedure. Integrates handy flow charts to help readers better understand the steps needed for design and analysis. Includes a revised chapter containing the latest ACI and AASHTO Provisions on the design of post-tensioned beam end anchorage blocks using the strut-and-tie approach in conformity with ACI 318-08 Code. Offers a new complete section with two extensive design examples using the strut-and-tie approach for the design of corbels and deep beams. Features an addition to the elastic method of design, with comprehensive design examples on LRFD and Standard AASHTO designs of bridge deck members for flexure, shear and torsion, conforming to the latest AASHTO specifications. Includes a revised chapter on slender columns, including a simplified load-contour biaxial bending method which is easier to apply in desiign, using moments rather than loads in the reciprocal approach. A useful construction reference for engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twelve post-tensioned prestressed concrete I-beams and three hollow box beams were loaded to failure. Four I-beams were tested at 21 days; all others were tested after 10 to 12 years of live load. Live load ranged from zero to 1.5 times the design live load. The I-beams were straight, 42 feet long, and 24 inches deep. Five I-beams were post-tensioned with ungrouted cables. Seven I-beams were post-tensioned with steel bars; four were grouted. The hollow box beams were gable-shaped with straight tendons. The box beams were 42 feet long, 33 inches deep, 18 inches wide, and post-tensioned with ungrouted, stranded-wire cables. In general, the flexural stiffness of all beams was less than the stiffness computed from the ACl code. The ultimate moment capacity of all beams was greater than values computed from the ACl code; the ultimate moment capacity was 13% greater for I-beams with bar tendons; 14% greater for I-beams with cable tendons, and 11% greater for the box beams. The difference was least 7% for beams with bonded tendons. The average ratio of clear span to collapse deflection for all I-beams was 64; the ratio was 52 for the box beams. The average factor of safety against collapse was 2.46 for the I-beams and 2.05 for the box beams. Prestress loss, type of tendon, time variation of concrete strength, and live-load history did not significantly affect the ultimate moment capacity of the beams. (Author).

Book excerpt: Mechanics Today, Volume 2 consists of four articles considering applied mechanics. Each article starts with a discussion of fundamentals and continues with a presentation of analytical and experimental results. Topics discussed in the first three articles include theory of creep and shrinkage in concrete structures; nonequilibrium thermodynamics of continua; and mathematical aspects of finite-element approximations in continuum mechanics. The last article shows the utilization of exact simple wave solutions for the construction of uniform approximations for waves in nonlinear dissipative or bounded media. This book is useful to specialists and accessible to non-experts but with sufficient background of the subject matter.
