Book excerpt: Oil spill behavior in an Arctic winter environment is investigated. Several small controlled oil spills were conducted on the Bering Sea in Northwestern Alaska. To duplicate a real world spill as closely as possible, a Prudhoe Bay crude oil was used as the test oil. Investigated were oil spread rate on snow and ice, oil absorbtion into snow and ice surfaces, aging of oil on snow and ice surfaces, and effectiveness of various cleanup procedures. (Author).
Book Synopsis Responding to Oil Spills in the U.S. Arctic Marine Environment by : National Research Council
Download or read book Responding to Oil Spills in the U.S. Arctic Marine Environment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. Arctic waters north of the Bering Strait and west of the Canadian border encompass a vast area that is usually ice covered for much of the year, but is increasingly experiencing longer periods and larger areas of open water due to climate change. Sparsely inhabited with a wide variety of ecosystems found nowhere else, this region is vulnerable to damage from human activities. As oil and gas, shipping, and tourism activities increase, the possibilities of an oil spill also increase. How can we best prepare to respond to such an event in this challenging environment? Responding to Oil Spills in the U.S. Arctic Marine Environment reviews the current state of the science regarding oil spill response and environmental assessment in the Arctic region north of the Bering Strait, with emphasis on the potential impacts in U.S. waters. This report describes the unique ecosystems and environment of the Arctic and makes recommendations to provide an effective response effort in these challenging conditions. According to Responding to Oil Spills in the U.S. Arctic Marine Environment, a full range of proven oil spill response technologies is needed in order to minimize the impacts on people and sensitive ecosystems. This report identifies key oil spill research priorities, critical data and monitoring needs, mitigation strategies, and important operational and logistical issues. The Arctic acts as an integrating, regulating, and mediating component of the physical, atmospheric and cryospheric systems that govern life on Earth. Not only does the Arctic serve as regulator of many of the Earth's large-scale systems and processes, but it is also an area where choices made have substantial impact on life and choices everywhere on planet Earth. This report's recommendations will assist environmentalists, industry, state and local policymakers, and anyone interested in the future of this special region to preserve and protect it from damaging oil spills.

Book excerpt: This book covers research completed between 1981 and May 1985 and includes: reviews of recent studies, sitings and investigations at spills-of-opportunity as well as results of recent arctic and sub-Arctic oil weathering experiments and observations on the behavior of crude oil in the presence of ice. Topics covered include the following: laboratory studies of formation and stability of water-in-oil emulsions; selected case histories of the more detailed chemistry studies of mousse behavior and long term fate in near-coastal and open ocean oil spills/blowouts; tar ball formation and distribution; and algorithms and computer programs to simulate the formation of water-in-oil emulsion.
Book Synopsis Field Research Spills to Investigate the Physical and Chemical Fate of Oil in Pack Ice by : I. A. Buist
Download or read book Field Research Spills to Investigate the Physical and Chemical Fate of Oil in Pack Ice written by I. A. Buist and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes three experimental crude oil spills of one cubic metre each carried out in pack ice offshore of Cape Breton Island. The spills were conducted to study the behaviour and fate of oil spilled in pack ice conditions (pack ice concentrations of 50 to 90 percent). Specifically, the spills were designed to: relate oil spreading behaviour to ice conditions; evaluate the fate of oil spilled in leads and brash ice according to processes of evaporation, emulsification, dispersion, and incorporation into or on top of the ice; and identify possible countermeasures strategies for crude oil spills in ice through observation of the oil behaviour. Results are presented with regard to oil spreading as determined by aerial remote sensing; comparison of observed spreading with those predicted by a model; oil drift; oil/ice interactions; changes occurring during weathering; and experience with in-situ burning of the spill.
