Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among birds, shorebirds provide some of the more unique opportunities to examine basic problems in behavior, ecology, and evolution. This is in large measure due to the diversity, both behaviorally and ecologically, of a group closely related taxonomically and distributed throughout the world. The overall aim of these two volumes is to provide a representative selection of current research being conducted on shorebird behavior and ecology. Traditionally, marine birds have included those species that breed in large colonies on offshore islands along coasts (see Volume 4 of this series). Although shorebirds have generally not been considered within this group, the fact that almost 40% of the species breed along coasts and more than 60% often or always spend the nonbreeding season in coastal habitats more than justifies their inclusion as marine birds (at least those species that totally or partially depend upon the marine environment). Their inclusion markedly increases species diversity in marine birds since shorebirds add about 217 species to the 280 that are traditionally thought of as marine.

Download or read book Biology of Marine Birds written by E. A. Schreiber and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001-08-16 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology of Marine Birds provides the only complete summary of information about marine birds ever published. It analyzes their breeding biology, ecology, taxonomy, evolution, fossil history, physiology, energetics, and conservation. The book covers four orders of marine birds in detail and includes two summary chapters that address the biology of shorebirds and wading birds and their lives in the marine environment. Summary tables give detailed information on various aspects of their life histories, breeding biology, physiology and energetics, and demography. It provides a guide to ornithologists and students for research projects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in the Study of Behavior was initiated over 40 years ago to serve the increasing number of scientists engaged in the study of animal behavior. That number is still expanding. This volume makes another important "contribution to the development of the field" by presenting theoretical ideas and research to those studying animal behavior and to their colleagues in neighboring fields. This volume reflects many of the current themes in animal behavior including the evolution of social behavior, sexual selection and communication. It also reflects controversial topics on which the authors provide interesting, new insights. Advances in the Study of Behavior is now available online at ScienceDirect — full-text online from volume 30 onwards.

Book Synopsis The Population Ecology and Conservation of Charadrius Plovers by : Mark A. Colwell
Download or read book The Population Ecology and Conservation of Charadrius Plovers written by Mark A. Colwell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-04-26 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 40 or so species of beach-loving plovers (genus Charadrius) comprise a diverse group of shorebirds found around the world. Most of these species are challenged by changing climates and other human-related development activities, yet they provide key insights into basic ecological and evolutionary processes. The expert international contributors take a comparative approach, presenting examples from many worldwide plover studies and synthesizing the group’s most pressing and important topics. The book further presents an emphasis on full life-cycle biology, including the importance of examining migratory connectivity issues, even for non-migratory plovers.
