Book excerpt: Prevent-Teach-Reinforce: The School-Based Model of Individualized Positive Behavior Support, Second Edition is an easy-to-use practical guide to the research-proven Prevent-Teach-Reinforce (PTR) model. This book helps K-8 educators solve serious behavior challenges by guiding school-based teams through the five-step PTR process: 1) teaming and goal-setting, 2) data collection, 3) functional behavioral assessment, 4) creation of a behavior intervention plan, and 5) progress-monitoring and data-based decision making. This edition has been updated to include the latest research supporting PTR; increased emphasis on the PTR facilitator's role, collaboration, and the teacher's observations; new information on multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) and evidence-based classroom strategies; and more detailed guidance on every PTR step. Useful forms are provided as chapter appendices and downloadable materials. Book appendices describe specific Prevent, Teach, and Reinforce strategies in depth and present rich case studies illustrating PTR in action. ;

Book excerpt: For Behavior Management, Positive Behavior Support (PBS), Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), and Functional Assessment courses. With the goal of helping teachers achieve optimistic outcomes for the students they teach, this text focuses on ways for combining the "best" of behavior analysis, behavior management, and positive behavior supports (PBS). Translating empirical-based research into current practice, this book demonstrates the effectiveness of PBS with a wide range of learners with varying off-task behaviors. This text reinforces the need to seek "goodness of fit" based on each learners' developmental strengths and challenges. While primarily addressing the needs of learners with disabilities, the authors emphasize the relevance of PBS for all children and youth, regardless of their abilities in any area.

Book excerpt: This booklet reviews the literature and offers procedures to reduce undesirable behavior in school settings. The following topics are addressed: definition of terms relating to behavior reduction procedures; environmental modification (changing the demands of a task, reducing the complexity of each step, or teaching a new skill); differential reinforcement (reinforcing appropriate behavior while ignoring inappropriate behavior); response cost (removing a positive reinforcer when an inappropriate behavior is displayed); timeout (removing the child for a short period from all reinforcement opportunities); overcorrection (the "disrupter" restores the situation and practices an appropriate behavior); aversive conditioning (undesirable stimuli are used to reduce undesirable behavior); corporal punishment; and research findings (research does not provide clear direction on when to use specific behavior reduction procedures). The last section presents recommendations including: obtain prior consent; try less aversive strategies first; follow appropriate protocol; write a detailed plan; use trained personnel; and keep track of effectiveness. Appended is the policy statement of the Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders on the use of behavior reduction procedures. Includes 93 references. (DB)
