Book excerpt: The purpose of this collective case study was to explore novice teachers’ perceptions of their preparedness to teach early literacy skills to beginning readers in rural northwest North Carolina. Novice teachers’ perceptions of how adequately prepared they felt to teach early literacy skills to beginning readers in prekindergarten through third grade was examined using Badura’s theory of self-efficacy. The central question was “What are the perceptions of participants regarding their preparedness to teach early literacy skills to beginning readers?” The three sub-questions were as follows: how do participants describe their preparedness as it relates to content knowledge; how do participants describe their preparedness as it relates to addressing students’ challenges in acquiring literacy skills; and what experiences or opportunities do participants believe would help prepare beginning teachers to teach early literacy skills to beginning readers? The participants were 10 novice elementary school teachers responsible for teaching early literacy skills in prekindergarten through third grade. Data was collected via individual interviews, focus group interviews, and reflective journaling. Data was analyzed using coding to identify themes and patterns. The study produced four themes and nine subthemes. The themes were feelings of preparedness, effective literacy instruction, orthography, and differentiated instruction. The results indicated novice teachers felt unprepared to meet the literacy needs of beginning readers. However, teachers felt more prepared after gaining experience in the classroom, collaborating with veteran teachers, and when using scripted programs. Future research needs to include a larger sample size representative of more teacher preparation programs to better understanding teachers’ current perceptions of preparedness to teach early literacy skills to beginning readers.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study provides insight into teacher perspectives about their pre-service training in relation to early reading instruction. Interpretive phenomenological analysis was utilized to better understand teachers' pre-service experiences and the knowledge and skills they learned to teach reading. Five participants provided detailed information about their experiences. Results of semi-structured interviews were viewed through the lenses of transformative learning theory and andragogy. Key findings included the following overall themes: teachers' pre-service education was enjoyable, teachers felt that their pre-service education didn't fully prepare them to teach reading once they were in the classroom and teachers professional development after graduation filled the gaps. This study considers the reality of teachers' experiences and perspectives on reading instruction with the hope of contributing to dialogue about how teachers are trained at the undergraduate level and how they continue to learn as in-service teachers.

This study examined the impact teacher preparation courses as well as the student teaching experience had on preservice teachers’ self-efficacy for literacy instruction. An extensive review of the literature revealed there is not a large body of research that is literacy content-specific and focused on the preservice teacher efficacy. This study is significant in that the process of teacher preparation in universities is one of continuous improvement. Professors of teacher preparation courses must rely on research to consistently put evidence-based practices in place for improvement to impact student achievement. This study adds to the knowledge base of institutions of higher education to help build preservice teachers’ sense of self-efficacy, thus making stronger, more efficacious beginning teachers. -- The researcher utilized a mixed-methods research design. Data were collected with the Efficacy Scale for Teachers of Reading (EST-R) and through interview questions that determined the extent of preservice teacher perceptions on (a) the impact the student teaching experience had on elementary preservice teachers’ sense of self-efficacy in teaching reading, (b) the impact a senior-level literacy course had on elementary preservice teachers’ sense of self-efficacy in teaching reading, and (c) the relationship between the impact of coursework and the student teaching experience on elementary preservice teachers’ sense of self-efficacy in teaching reading.

First, the study sought to determine the validity and reliability of an instrument being used to measure teacher efficacy. After psychometric analysis, the Utah Teacher Efficacy Scale (UTES) was deemed as both a valid and reliable instrument for the purpose of measuring preservice and novice elementary school teacher efficacy. Second, this study analyzed teacher self-efficacy of preservice and novice elementary school teachers at two different points in a time - once at the end of their teacher preparation program, and again after they had taught for one academic year. The sample (N = 123) for this study was created from graduates of teacher preparation programs throughout the state of Utah. A two-factor repeated measures ANOVA design was used to measure one between-subjects factor (Factor A) and one within-subjects factor (Factor B). Factor A involved a comparison between two independent groups of prospective teachers based on the type of student teaching assignment, number of student teaching placements, and the number of literacy methods courses completed. The two levels of Factor B consisted of two different UTES measurement occasions. Results of this analysis indicated that preservice teachers in this study reported high teacher efficacy. As these individuals became teachers, their teacher efficacy fell, indicating there is room for improvement in presenting the realities of teaching. Additionally, teacher preparation program characteristics such as the type of student teaching experience (student teaching or internship), and the number of student teaching placements (one or two) do not seem to provide statistically significant advantages over time. The number of literacy methods courses, however, does seem to provide statistically significant advantages in securing and maintaining high teacher efficacy over time in the areas of global and reading teacher efficacy. Third, the study also analyzed how school context variables affect teacher efficacy. Novice teachers (N = 136) were asked to rate the usefulness of professional development and the helpfulness of the mentoring support they received. Results of this analysis showed that professional development and mentoring support, if perceived as useful and helpful, had a positive and statistically significant correlation with teacher efficacy.

The purpose of this study was to examine modifications in pre-service teachers' perceptions and knowledge of emergent literacy during their enrollment in an early literacy teacher preparation course. Three research questions were posed for this study: (a) How does the early literacy course modify pre-service teachers' perceptions of emergent literacy? (b) How does the early literacy course modify pre-service teachers' knowledge of emergent literacy? and (c) How do pre-service teachers describe the impact of field experience on modifying their perceptions of emergent literacy? A mixed method design was used in this study. To collect data for the quantitative portion of the study, The Teacher Perceptions and Knowledge Questionnaire instrument (Stern Center, 2002) was utilized. Participants' perceptions and knowledge of emergent literacy were analyzed based on the results from the questionnaire instrument. To collect data for the qualitative portion of the study, the researcher used open-ended survey questions to analyze participants' descriptions of the impact the early literacy course may have had on their perceptions of emergent literacy. Multiple themes appeared throughout the participants' narrative responses. A total of 106 participants completed the study. Results from the study include mean differences from the pre and post quantitative data from the instrument. Results also include descriptive data from the narrative responses that explain how the early literacy course impacted participants' perceptions.

The study focused on literacy and determined students' exposure to best practices in their practicum experiences. Archival data from questionnaires given as part of the regular classroom assessment to two sets of preservice teachers during two semesters at one university in southwest Missouri were used for this study. The results of the questionnaire revealed varied differences in preservice teachers' perceptions of literacy strategies. The questionnaire revealed which reading strategies students felt prepared to teach, felt familiar with, and observed. Overall, the most familiar strategies preservice teachers observed and felt comfortable teaching were literature circles, writer's workshop, and guided reading. Preservice teachers were least familiar with Four Block, guided reading plus, Partnership in Comprehensive Literacy, and Write Source.
