These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Beethoven's Symphonies Critically Discussed: Look inside the book: If we want a taste of this-or, also, after our higher flights (and none the less after our intermediate and subterranean flights in the wizard world of a Wagner), a banquet in the unlaboured loveliness of old time, we shall recur to Haydn; but if we want the higher flights, and broader flights, and deeper flights themselves, the sublime loveliness and Alpine grandeur-not Saxon Switzerland, but Tell's-we shall hasten with reverence and gladness to Beethoven, who towers above Haydn-and also above these colossal upshoots of this later 'tertiary' period; for these latter men seem rather intense than universal; whereof more anon. ...There he sits-look at him well-the fullest incarnation of music, till now the greatest home, emporium, and royal residence of musical power, with all which that implies-including, lowest down, the ineffable; for, always, a man is tender in proportion as he is strong, great in proportion as he is good-Ludwig van Beethoven, in his divine genius and terrible infliction (one of the most painful ironies of human history-like a fate out of high Greek story), one of the most intensely interesting of the race of men

While admitting that the author has at times been carried away by his exuberant fancy, it is impossible to deny that he possesses in a very high degree those powers of analysis without which it is impossible to do justice to, or even approximately to understand, Beethoven. Music is verily the language of the soul - higher, finer, more delicate in its methods, and more ethereal in its results, than anything to which the tongue can give utterance; expressing what speech cannot speak, and affecting, as no mere talking can, the invisible player who manipulates the keyboard of the human intellect, and whom we call The Soul. Music is truly of such a nature, and appeals so powerfully and mysteriously to that soul, that the words of Jean Paul seem quite justified, - Ich glaube, nur Gott versteht unser Musik. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Performance of Beethoven's Symphonies The secret of the artistic rendering of musical compositions, and hence the secret of the conductor's art, lies in the style. The reproducing artist, in this case the conductor, must have absorbed into himself, so to speak, the peculiarity of each master and each masterpiece, and his rendering must be subordinate to this peculiarity even in the smallest details. As regards the time, the phrasing, the treatment of the sounds in the orchestra and even the technical manipulation, the conductor must assume a different personality according as he is conducting the Eroica or the Pastorale, Tristan or the Meistersinger, according as he is trying to reproduce Haydn or Beethoven, Berlioz or Wagner. I believe I am not going too far when I say that a conductor of genius unites in himself just as many personalities as he reproduces masterpieces. One of the essential conditions of the style of an execution must be clearness, and this is the quality which will occupy us here with regard to Beethoven's Symphonies. This, is precisely the point in which these greatest of all orchestral compositions offer the greatest difficulty, for even a perfectly correct rendering does not always make the intentions of the master as clear as they become by the reading of the score, or even by the playing of the pianoforte extracts. Indeed it must be confessed that many passages awaken a feeling of confusion rather than of pleasure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Symphony Since Beethoven IF in wandering through some Alpine valley, while we were standing awestruck before a colossal mountain, whose snow - crowned peak rose shim mering in the distance, and we were perhaps deem ing that man happy whose courage and strength were great enough to carry him over this peak to enjoy the view beyond, when suddenly our medi tations were interrupted by a voice at our side saying in all seriousness, I am going to climb over that mountain into the blue clouds beyond, we would have little doubt but that we were con fronted either by a foolhardy dreamer or a mad man. We would scarcely ridicule the man, but rather look upon his simple faith with eyes of pity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Beethoven's musical prowess was recognised from an early age, and he soon became famous as a virtuoso pianist and composer. However, after having gone almost completely deaf by 1814, Beethoven ceased public performances and appearances entirely. One of the most celebrated composers in Western history, Beethoven's music remains amongst the most commonly-performed classical music around the world. Read & Co. This book was released on 2000 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A daring composer in his own right, Hector Berlioz made a considerable reputation and a modest living for himself writing about music. This compact volume gathers brief, pithy essays Berlioz wrote on Beethoven's nine symphonies, his opera, Fidelio, and his piano sonatas and trios. Berlioz vividly depicts the salient features of the music with observations that are acute and passionate, as valuable for musicians as for amateurs. Beyond its astute commentary on the music, however, Berlioz's book offers a rare firsthand look at the reception and reputation accorded Beethoven's music in the decades following his death. Berlioz transcribes the comments of amateurs leaving the conservatoire after a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and provides a mocking glimpse of the French appreciation of the great German composer: What stands in the way of the music of 'Fidelio' as regards the Parisian public is ... the great disdain of the composer for sonorous effects which are not justified. He addresses Beethoven's skillful use of the orchestra as an instrument of drama and the general disapprobation that greeted this approach. He also includes a satirical piece on the fad of calling up the spirit of a composer and transcribing new, posthumous compositions. Berlioz's essays testify to the tumult caused by Beethoven's music in his time and offer ways to approach the music that remain enlightening and fresh.
