Book excerpt: Bed bugs are thriving across the globe--from North and South America, to Africa, Asia and Europe. For some time, bed bugs were naively seen as a problem unique to developing countries, but their love of high thread content sheets has set them up in five-star residences in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other parts of Europe as well. Bed Bugs were first noticed in society by Americans in the early 1700 s. Many believe sailboats returning from Europe unknowingly carried the bugs as cargo, as sailors complained of being attacked as they slept in their cabins. With the introduction of DDT in the 1950s, bed bugs nearly disappeared. But when DDT was banned in the 1970 s, a wave of super bed bugs rejoiced. Now, up to 25% of residents in some cities have reported problems with the pests, bordering on epidemic levels. In fact, history has never seen such widespread and intense bed bug infestations. Our propensity for travel has left bed bugs with enviable frequent flyer status too. Following the Sydney Olympics, for example, and the thousands of visitors to Australia, it was estimated that the bed bug occupancy rate in Sydney hotels was 95%. In "Sleep Tight, "Brooke Borel introduces readers to the biology of these amazingly adaptive insects which can travel over 100 foot distances at night--and the myriad ways in which humans respond to them. She travels to meet with scientists who are rearing bed bug colonies on their own blood-- to the BedBug University, to swank apartments on the upper East Side of Manhattan. She explores the history of bed bugs, and their near extinction, charting how current infestations are in direct response to human chemical use. She also introduces us to the economics of bed bug infestations, and the industry that has arisen to combat that. This is the first history and natural history of bed bugs, and it leaves few exoskeletons unturned."

This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written and is intended to assist anyone undertaking the challenge of dealing with a bed bug situation and prefer to self-treat. These treatment options and methods were compiled in collaboration with members of the IBBRA who are leading bed bug pest management professionals. The greatest concern with do-it-yourself bed bug control is brought on by the mis-use of chemical pesticides used by the general public which are at best moderately effective at controlling these pests. This books teaches you what to do and most importantly what not to do. Dealing with bed bugs is a momentous challenge for most people because of their flattened bodies and amazing ability to migrate into cracks and crevices where they can't be found. Sometimes months pass where a family is trying to figure out what it is that is biting them because they don't know the signs of bed bugs. On average, we receive from 5 to 10 calls daily at all hours of the day and night from people desperately searching and begging for a solution to something that is biting them. The need for bed bug education and solutions is evident in every call received. Unfortunately, most of these calls are from people who are on limited incomes and just can't possibly afford the services of a pest management professional. The International Bed Bug Resource Authority (IBBRA) has established an industry first "Three Step Program" for anyone from consumer to business owner to follow to properly solve their bed bug issue. The three steps will allow them to "Educate" themselves about bed bugs, their behaviors and to learn about companies and or products that can assist them. Secondly, they will be able to "Evaluate" their overall situation and not have to combat bed bugs blindly or without the proper tools. Lastly, this will enable them to "Initiate" a plan of action steps to utilize the best possible resources to solve their problem and set a preventative protocol in place for future possibilities of infestation. Obviously, learning how you are at risk of bed bugs before you bring them home or finding them in the earliest stage of introduction is the best scenario but unfortunately this is not always the case. The homeowner has different challenges that depend on the severity of the infestation. The variables are how long the infestation has been going on and how it has spread to other parts of the home. I encourage those contemplating do-it-yourself treatment methods to read through this book in its entirety before making the decision to take on this job. And I cannot stress the importance of knowing about re-introduction possibilities. You need to know all the risk factors so you can develop a pro-active alert with all members of your family.

Although first recognized in the tourism industry in the late 1990’s, bed bug infestations are now a common issue for private residences. People dealing with an infestation can spread bed bugs to the homes of family and friends, to public places they visit, and to their work place. From there, bugs continue to relocate by hitchhiking on personal belongings. We offer treatment recommendations to help you protect your home and belongings, and to stop the spread of bed bugs. This guidebook provides comprehensive instructions using methods currently available, and emphasizes techniques that do not rely on pesticide application. You may choose to hire a pest management professional and utilize their additional options for controlling bed bugs. But, you may still need to get bed bugs out of your personal belongings. This is a Do-it-Yourself guide that will help in either situation. The document is divided into two sections: Part 1 is a list of household items that often need to be disinfested. For each item, a list of the techniques that can be employed from Part 2 are listed, as well as any special instructions for that item. Part 2 offers techniques for removing or eliminating bed bugs. For each technique there is a brief description, followed by a list of supplies you will need, “how to” instructions, special considerations, and advantages and disadvantages
