She was of medium height with a boyish figure whose squareness made her look shorter than she was. She had abundant, bright brown hair and fine gray eyes. Her beauty, if she could be said to have beauty, lay in her healthy color, in the shape of her head, and in her profile which was made individual and interesting by a firm, slightly prominent chin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lu of the Ranges Fold upon fold the forest draped the undulating sides of the Main Ranges, and filled the valley, broken only by an occasional landslip, a splash of tawny earth and rubble, and the disintegrated roots of trees, with a new growth struggling to life above their fallen bodies. For est myrtles, distorted and moss-grown, mountain-ash, black-butt, and the towering trunks of battalions of white stringy bark; beneath these, a thick growth of pepper mint, creeper, and fern. N o hint of distance, no sky visible, save directly overhead. There, in the midst of the forest, lay that deadening world which knows no horizon, where there is nothing to draw the soul upward beyond its own petty confines; no towering peak to climb, no beckoning road, no dis tant town, the trees pressing too tightly in their stifling phalanx to allow of any possible aspiration. Book excerpt: Murder darkens the bright days of summer in an idyllic Suffolk village, in an Albert Campion mystery that is simply “unforgettable” (A.S. Byatt). Private detective Albert Campion’s glorious summer in Pontisbright is blighted by death. Amidst the preparations for Minnie and Tonker Cassand’s fabulous summer party, a murder is discovered—and it falls to Campion to unravel the intricate web of motives, suspicion and deception. Danger is hardly unknown in this idyllic rural village, but it is a less romantic peril than Campion faced on his first visit, more than twenty years ago . . . “My very favourite of the four Queens of Crime is Allingham.” —J. K. Rowling “Margery Allingham has precious few peers and no superiors.” —The Sunday Times “Allingham has that rare gift in a novelist, the creation of characters so rich and so real that they stay with the reader forever.” —Sara Paretsky

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: From Tove Ditlevsen, the acclaimed author of the Copenhagen Trilogy, comes The Faces, a searing, haunting novel of a woman on the edge, portrayed with all the vividness of lived experience. Copenhagen, 1968. Lise, a children’s book writer and married mother of three, is increasingly haunted by disembodied faces and voices. She is convinced that her husband, already extravagantly unfaithful, will leave her. Most of all, she is scared that she will never write again. Yet as she descends into a world of pills and hospitals, she begins to wonder—is insanity really something to be feared, or does it bring a kind of freedom?

Book excerpt: It is a golden evening of high summer in July 1990. Robin Timariot has set out that morning on what he has planned as a six-day tramp along part of Offa's Dyke. At the close of his first day's walk he encounters an elegant middle-aged woman who seems strangely out of place among the sheep and gorse of Hergest Ridge. They exchange only a few words of conversation, but their talk is enigmatic -- and unforgettable. A few days later, at the end of his walk, Timariot returns home to learn from the newspapers that, just a few hours after their meeting, the woman, whose name was Louise Paxton, was raped and then murdered, along with an artist, Oscar Bantock, who lived near by. A man is swiftly charged and convicted of the crime, but a string of inexplicable events begins to convince Timariot -- and others -- that all is not what it seems. Timariot, fascinated by Louise Paxton's memory, is drawn irresistibly into the complex motives and relationships of her family and friends, searching against his better judgement for the secret of what really happened on the day she died. The closer he gets to the truth, the more hideous and uncertain it seems to be. And far too late he realizes that it may threaten many powerful people. So much so that anybody who uncovers it is unlikely to be allowed to live.
