Book excerpt: FINALIST FOR THE 2017 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FOR FICTION Named a Best Book of 2017 by NPR, Entertainment Weekly, the Los Angeles Times, BuzzFeed, Bustle, and Electric Literature “There was a time I would have called Lisa Ko’s novel beautifully written, ambitious, and moving, and all of that is true, but it’s more than that now: if you want to understand a forgotten and essential part of the world we live in, The Leavers is required reading.” —Ann Patchett, author of Commonwealth Lisa Ko’s powerful debut, The Leavers, is the winner of the 2016 PEN/Bellwether Prize for Fiction, awarded by Barbara Kingsolver for a novel that addresses issues of social justice. One morning, Deming Guo’s mother, Polly, an undocumented Chinese immigrant, goes to her job at a nail salon—and never comes home. No one can find any trace of her. With his mother gone, eleven-year-old Deming is left mystified and bereft. Eventually adopted by a pair of well-meaning white professors, Deming is moved from the Bronx to a small town upstate and renamed Daniel Wilkinson. But far from all he’s ever known, Daniel struggles to reconcile his adoptive parents’ desire that he assimilate with his memories of his mother and the community he left behind. Told from the perspective of both Daniel—as he grows into a directionless young man—and Polly, Ko’s novel gives us one of fiction’s most singular mothers. Loving and selfish, determined and frightened, Polly is forced to make one heartwrenching choice after another. Set in New York and China, The Leavers is a vivid examination of borders and belonging. It’s a moving story of how a boy comes into his own when everything he loves is taken away, and how a mother learns to live with the mistakes of the past.

Book excerpt: Riveting and disquieting, After Anna is a groundbreaking domestic thriller, as well as a novel of emotional justice and legal intrigue. New York Times bestselling author Lisa Scottoline keeps readers on their toes until the final shocking page. Nobody cuts deeper than family... Dr. Noah Alderman, a widower and single father, has remarried a wonderful woman, Maggie Ippolitti, and for the first time in a long time, he and his young son are happy. Despite her longing for the daughter she hasn’t seen since she was a baby, Maggie is happy too, and she’s even more overjoyed when she unexpectedly gets another chance to be a mother to the child she thought she'd lost forever, her only daughter Anna. Maggie and Noah know that having Anna around will change their lives, but they would never have guessed that everything would go wrong, and so quickly. Anna turns out to be a gorgeous seventeen-year-old who balks at living under their rules, though Maggie, ecstatic to have her daughter back, ignores the red flags that hint at the trouble brewing in a once-perfect marriage and home. Events take a heartbreaking turn when Anna is murdered and Noah is accused and tried for the heinous crime. Maggie must face not only the devastation of losing her daughter, but the realization that Anna's murder may have been at the hands of a husband she loves. In the wake of this tragedy, new information drives Maggie to search for the truth, leading her to discover something darker than she could have ever imagined. Praise for Lisa Scottoline: "A deliciously distracting thriller...Scottoline illuminat[es] the landing strip of revelations and truths in a deliciously slow and intense way." —The Washington Post on After Anna "Scottoline keeps the pace relentless as she drops a looming threat into the heart of an idyllic suburban community, causing readers to hold their breath in anticipation." —Booklist on One Perfect Lie "Readers can be assured that the author nails the high school milieu, from athletic rivalries to sexting...they're in for one thrilling ride." —Kirkus on One Perfect Lie "Entertaining...This fast-paced read culminates in a daring chase that would play well on the big screen." —Publishers Weekly

When she was young, Lisa’s father was a mythical figure who was rarely present in her life. As she grew older, her father took an interest in her, ushering her into a new world of mansions, vacations, and private schools. Lisa found her father’s attention thrilling, but he could also be cold, critical and unpredictable. When her relationship with her mother grew strained in high school, Lisa decided to move in with her father, hoping he’d become the parent she’d always wanted him to be. Small Fry is Lisa Brennan-Jobs’s poignant story of childhood and growing up. Scrappy, wise, and funny, Lisa offers an intimate window into the peculiar world of this family, and the strange magic of Silicon Valley in the seventies and eighties.

Guided by her middle-class values, Christian faith, and a keen interest in science and philosophy, she navigates life with her unpredictable, alcoholic mother and her own inner demons. Dreaming of a freedom as delicate as a butterfly’s, Lisa finds solace in her final year when she meets Christos, an accomplished long-distance swimmer. Captivated by Christos’s love for beauty and his laid-back nature, Lisa joins his family’s Greek band as a singer and dancer after graduation. Fortuitously inheriting substantial assets, she establishes a thriving taverna, though at the expense of her health. However, Lisa’s world shatters when she uncovers Christos’s hidden traits of deception and dishonesty, defended by him through Machiavellian principles and a curious analogy to Santa Claus. This revelation challenges her deeply held Christian virtues and scientific rationale. Resolute to win her trust, Christos undergoes a transformation, adopting honesty and humility. Ultimately, the couple finds common ground and retreats to Christos’s inherited farm on a picturesque Greek island. There, amidst ancient stone houses, pencil pines, and the crystalline Aegean Sea, they rediscover each other and perhaps the elusive happiness Lisa has been seeking.

Book excerpt: "An essential document of our time." —Charles D’Ambrosio, author of Loitering In search of answers and action, the award-winning poet and essayist Lisa Wells brings us Believers, introducing trailblazers and outliers from across the globe who have found radically new ways to live and reconnect to the Earth in the face of climate change We find ourselves at the end of the world. How, then, shall we live? Like most of us, Lisa Wells has spent years overwhelmed by increasingly urgent news of climate change on an apocalyptic scale. She did not need to be convinced of the stakes, but she could not find practical answers. She embarked on a pilgrimage, seeking wisdom and paths to action from outliers and visionaries, pragmatists and iconoclasts. Believers tracks through the lives of these people who are dedicated to repairing the earth and seemingly undaunted by the task ahead. Wells meets an itinerant gardener and misanthrope leading a group of nomadic activists in rewilding the American desert. She finds a group of environmentalist Christians practicing “watershed discipleship” in New Mexico and another group in Philadelphia turning the tools of violence into tools of farming—guns into ploughshares. She watches the world’s greatest tracker teach others how to read a trail, and visits botanists who are restoring land overrun by invasive species and destructive humans. She talks with survivors of catastrophic wildfires in California as they try to rebuild in ways that acknowledge the fires will come again. Through empathic, critical portraits, Wells shows that these trailblazers are not so far beyond the rest of us. They have had the same realization, have accepted that we are living through a global catastrophe, but are trying to answer the next question: How do you make a life at the end of the world? Through this miraculous commingling of acceptance and activism, this focus on seeing clearly and moving forward, Wells is able to take the devastating news facing us all, every day, and inject a possibility of real hope. Believers demands transformation. It will change how you think about your own actions, about how you can still make an impact, and about how we might yet reckon with our inheritance.

Sloan takes us on a wild ride through the world of music video shoots, expensive hotels, and arena tours—showing us the darkness that threatens just below the surface.” —Taylor Jenkins Reid, New York Times bestselling author of Daisy Jones and The Six “I didn't know I was waiting for a smart, literary writer to craft a novel about the rise and fall of a teen star akin to Britney Spears until I discovered The Unraveling of Cassidy Holmes. A witty, bright, hilarious—and at times devastating—read. I loved it." —Amanda Eyre Ward, New York Times bestselling author of The Jetsetters Cassidy Holmes isn't just a celebrity. She is “Sassy Gloss,” the fourth member of the hottest pop group America has ever seen. Hotter than Britney dancing with a snake, hotter than Christina getting dirrty, Gloss was the pop act that everyone idolized. Fans couldn't get enough of them, their music, and the drama that followed them like moths to a flame—until the group’s sudden implosion in 2002. And at the center of it all was Sassy Cassy, the Texan with a signature smirk that had everyone falling for her. But now she's dead. Suicide. The world is reeling from this unexpected news, but no one is more shocked than the three remaining Glossies. Fifteen years ago, Rose, Merry, and Yumi had been the closest to Cassidy, and this loss is hitting them hard. Before the group split, they each had a special bond with Cassidy—truths they told, secrets they shared. But after years apart, each of them is wondering: what could they have done? Told in multiple perspectives—including Cassidy herself—and different timelines, this is a behind-the-scenes look into the rise and fall of a pop icon, and a penetrating examination of the dark side of celebrity and the industry that profits from it.

Book excerpt: In the second wave of the HIV epidemic, those with the disease are more likely than ever to be female, younger, heterosexual, a racial minority, and rural-living. Vital to the development of user-friendly health care systems is an understanding of the vastly different lives of this second wave of HIV-infected persons."You're the First One I've Told" offers a view into the lives of men and women infected with HIV. The experiences of twenty-five people living with this disease in rural eastern North Carolina serve as the foundation of this book, which also draws upon unique HIV/AIDS survey data collected by the authors and statistics from the Southeastern United States. This combination of qualitative and quantitative information provides readers with a vivid description of how people live with HIV/AIDS in the midst of their often traumatic lives, and why they manage their illness in ways that seem to contradict mainstream medical and social wisdom. The people interviewed represent a variety of races, genders, professions, family lives, and medical and social service access and utilization. This book is the first to address a history of racism, distrust of formalized medical systems, homophobia, trauma and their interplay with HIV treatment, particularly in the South. It is an indispensable read for students needing to understand health care for the disenfranchised, as well as any provider, policymaker, or researcher involved in HIV service provision.

Book excerpt: It was Friday, 7pm in evening. Weather was pleasant at Marina beach, Chennai, India. Mild air was flowing slowly. Sky was clean and blue. Tides could be seen in the blue ocean. A huge crowd were enjoying weekend that was just started. People from various parts of India could be seen there as well as some foreigner tourists too. One group of four people were throwing ball in to the ocean and trying to catch it when it was coming back to them along with tide. There was a See saw, Carousel, Ferris wheel, and few more rides were available for kids and you could see them enjoying all those rides. Variety of fresh seafoods was available on mostly all tent shops for those who love eating it. A young and beautiful girl, 18, Lisa was waiting there for her boyfriend Joe. She was resting on a boat that was kept idle near the beach on the sand. A couple beside her was flirting with each other. Lisa was happy to see them as her life was similar to them – a happy and complete love life. She was continuously checking time on her wrist watch as it appeared that Joe is getting late. Someone whispered “Love you my Lisa” she turned back and saw. It was none other than Joe. She tried to show some angriness and said “Go back. I don’t want to talk to you. Do you know since last 20 minutes I am waiting for you!” “You are very sweet and look much beautiful when you smile. I am very sorry for coming late.” Joe said and touched his ears with his hands. It was like he was asking Lisa to excuse him for coming late. “OK OK. I was just kidding my love.” Lisa hugged him and added “You know that we get very less time everyday to meet and in that less time 20 minutes worth a lot.” Joe kept his office bag on sand. He folded his jeans from the bottom to avoid getting it wet in the water. He opened his shoes and socks. Lisa pushed her nose with her fingers as she was sure that his socks are going to smell again. “Why do you wear same socks for more than one day? It is not hygienic and very bad for health.” Lisa scolded “Marry me and then the problem will be resolved.” Joe laughed and said “It’s not a joke, ok!” She too kept her purse and sandals there and both went to play in beach water with naked feet. After playing for some time they returned back to the place where they kept their belongings. Lisa sat on the sand. Joe lay down and kept his head on her lap. Lisa started combing his hair with her fingers with her one hand and another hand was on his chick. “You know that your lap is the best and quite place in the world. I feel relaxed. I feel peace. It throws away all my worries. I feel like god is fulfilling all my wishes.” Joe was feeling fortunate to have Lisa in his life. He added “It is my wish to love you in morning and evening, in day and night, and forever. You are always in my mind. I can’t even live without thinking of you. Sometime I smile without any reason and then realize that you are in my mind.” She was listening to it very silently and carefully. “I love you so much and at the same time I fear to loss you too. I don’t know why? What if I lost you someday? You have become my breath. You are my soul. I am habitual of you. I am addicted of you. You are the necessity of my life. I will almost die if you ever go away because of any reason.” “Just be positive my love. I am sure such thing will never happen. I am planning to meet your parents tomorrow after we meet here again on this beach. I will clearly tell your father that I want to marry you. I am confident that he will agree.” “Wow… Really! You are so sweet. Thank you so much. I will be the happier woman in the world to have you in my real life. I am now eagerly waiting for tomorrow. I am now able to see my better tomorrow. I see my dream is becoming true.” “I will be happier to have you too in my real life.” Joe said. He added “I am feeling hungry now. Let’s go to have dinner.”

Book excerpt: Detective Inspector Lisa Becker is fuming: Her bathroom scale is becoming more and more impertinent, the nice guy next door is too intrusive, her sexy colleague is not intrusive enough, an alley cat has moved into her apartment – and then there is this serial killer who beheads people in their sleep. Who needs that? There seems to be no connection between the murders. The killer could be insane, choosing victims at random. Lisa is convinced that that’s not the case, and after lots of digging she finds the motive... An unconventional thriller from Berlin, full of irony, an offbeat detective and lots of blood-covered carpets.
