Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia is the home of the largest single Muslim community of the world. Its Christian community, about 10% of the population, has until now received no overall description in English. Through cooperation of 26 Indonesian and European scholars, Protestants and Catholics, a broad and balanced picture is given of its 24 million Christians. This book sketches the growth of Christianity during the Portuguese period (1511-1605), it presents a fair account of developments under the Dutch colonial administration (1605-1942) and is more elaborate for the period of the Indonesian Republic (since 1945). It emphasizes the regional differences in this huge country, because most Christians live outside the main island of Java. Muslim-Christian relations, as well as the tensions between foreign missionaries and local theology, receive special attention.

Book excerpt: The Indonesian Dutch Consortium on Muslim-Christian Relations brought together academics, intellectuals as well as social activists from both countries, Christians and Muslims alike. While what is published here is the academic output, the impact of the consortium has therefore been much broader. The contributions are organized according to five generative themes: Identity, Religion and State, Gender, Hermeneutics and Theology of Dialogue. The book has attracted attention already before its publication. It is hoped that this project will inspire continuous efforts for interreligious dialogue. [Muslimisch-christliche Beziehungen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to legend, the Mandylion was an image of Christ’s face imprinted on a towel, kept in Edessa. This acheiopoieton image (“not made by human hands”) disappeared in the eighteenth century. The first records of another acheiropoieton relic appeared in mid-fourteenth century France: a long linen bearing the image of Jesus’ corpse, known nowadays as the Holy Shroud of Turin. Some believe the Mandylion and the Shroud to be the same object, first kept in Edessa, later translated to Constantinople, France and Italy. Andrea Nicolotti traces back the legend of the Edessean image in history and art, focusing especially on elements that could prove its identity with the Shroud, concluding that the Mandylion and the Shroud are two distinct objects.

The Handbook of Political Theory marks a benchmark publication at the cutting edge of its field. It is essential reading for all students and academics of political theory and political philosophy around the world.

Book excerpt: "In late fourteenth-century England, Crispin Guest is a man adrift in a culture where position is rigidly defined. Guest - once a knight, a member of the upper tiers of society - was convicted of treason and stripped of his rank and his honor for plotting against King Richard II. Having lost his patron, his friends, his betrothed, and his position at court, and with no trade to support him and no family willing to acknowledge him, Crispin has turned to the one thing he still has - his wits - to scrape out a living on the mean streets of London." "In 1384, Crispin is called to the compound of a successful but reclusive cloth merchant who suspects his wife of infidelity and wants Crispin to look into the matter. In dire need of money, Crispin reluctantly agrees and discovers that the wife is indeed up to something. But when he comes to inform his client, he finds the merchant dead - clearly murdered - in a sealed room, locked from the inside. Now Crispin has come to the unwanted attention of the Lord Sheriff of London and finds himself in the middle of a complex plot involving dark secrets, international intrigue, and a missing religious relic - one that lies at the very heart of this heinous and impossible crime."--BOOK JACKET.

And then Sara Kaplan, a bright, vivacious young lawyer, explodes into his life like a sexual hand grenade. Nicholas is stunned and horrified by the extent of his attraction to her. But whilst the chemistry between them is palpable, it takes catastrophic events to force him to recognize his own mortality and throw caution to the wind. For Sara, what started as a harmless fling swiftly deepens into a painful battle for Nicholas's heart with Mal, who is not quite as preoccupied in her world of food and school runs as Nicholas had believed. As Mal faces temptations of her own, she realizes she has to decide what she wants - and whether it's worth fighting for. The Adultery Club is the irresistible story of the perfectly balanced eternal triangle which no-one wants to be part of, but nor can they quite break away ...

Each term is presented within the context in which it first occurred and is given a definition which is both clear and informative. Major entries include a discussion of relevant viewpoints as well as comments on how the usage and application of the term have developed subsequent to its coining. In addition, all entries provide suggestions for further reading, and there is an extensive bibliography included at the end. This is an indispensable tool for anyone studying or teaching translation at university level.
