Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A major contribution . . . not only to Puccini studies but also to the study of nineteenth-century Italian opera in general.” —Nineteenth-Century Music Review In this groundbreaking survey of the fundamentals, methods, and formulas that were taught at Italian music conservatories during the 19th Century, Nicholas Baragwanath explores the compositional significance of tradition in Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Boito, and, most importantly, Puccini. Taking account of some 400 primary sources, Baragwanath explains the varying theories and practices of the period in light of current theoretical and analytical conceptions of this music. The Italian Traditions and Puccini offers a guide to an informed interpretation and appreciation of Italian opera by underscoring the proximity of archaic traditions to the music of Puccini. “Dense and challenging in its detail and analysis, this work is an important addition to the growing corpus of Puccini studies. . . . Highly recommended.” —Choice

Download or read book Genius in France written by Ann Jefferson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging book spans three centuries to provide the first full account of the long and diverse history of genius in France. Exploring a wide range of examples from literature, philosophy, and history, as well as medicine, psychology, and journalism, Ann Jefferson examines the ways in which the idea of genius has been ceaselessly reflected on and redefined through its uses in these different contexts. She traces its varying fortunes through the madness and imposture with which genius is often associated, and through the observations of those who determine its presence in others. Jefferson considers the modern beginnings of genius in eighteenth-century aesthetics and the works of philosophes such as Diderot. She then investigates the nineteenth-century notion of national and collective genius, the self-appointed role of Romantic poets as misunderstood geniuses, the recurrent obsession with failed genius in the realist novels of writers like Balzac and Zola, the contested category of female genius, and the medical literature that viewed genius as a form of pathology. She shows how twentieth-century views of genius narrowed through its association with IQ and child prodigies, and she discusses the different ways major theorists—including Sartre, Barthes, Derrida, and Kristeva—have repudiated and subsequently revived the concept. Rich in narrative detail, Genius in France brings a fresh approach to French intellectual and cultural history, and to the burgeoning field of genius studies.

Download or read book Dissertation on Modern Music written by Jean-Jacques Rousseau and published by Newcomb Livraria Press. This book was released on with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new 2023 translation into English from the original manuscripts of Rousseau's classic and influential 1743 "Dissertation on modern music" (Dissertation sur la musique moderne), a pioneering work on music theory. Here Rousseau critiques the contemporary music of his time and advocates for a return to nature and simplicity in music. He argues that music should be based on natural sounds, rather than the artificial conventions of Western music. Rousseau's ideas on music would go on to influence later composers, such as Beethoven and Wagner.

Book Synopsis French Theatre in the Neo-classical Era, 1550-1789 by : William Driver Howarth
Download or read book French Theatre in the Neo-classical Era, 1550-1789 written by William Driver Howarth and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-06-05 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1997 book covers the period which saw the establishment in France of a centralized official theatre - not only the Comédie-Française (the first 'national' theatre), but an Italian theatre and a state opera; the often subversive independent theatres are also discussed. Nearly 1,000 documents deal with censorship and other aspects of external control, company management, the acting profession, dramatic theory and criticism, theatre architecture, settings and costumes, audience composition and behaviour. Over 120 pictorial documents - architectural drawings, technical engravings, frontispieces, portraits, etc. - provide a visual dimension where relevant. A full linking narrative and a copious bibliography help to make this an important reference work and a valuable research tool.

In the newly revised edition of 'Music and the French Enlightenment', Cynthia Verba updates this fascinating story with the prolific scholarship that has emerged since the book was first published." -- rear cover.
