Book excerpt: Love and marriage are the concerns of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. Lucentio's marriage to Bianca is prompted by his idealized love of an apparently ideal woman. Petruchio's wooing of Katherine, however, is free of idealism. Petruchio takes money from Bianca's suitors to woo her, since Katherine must marry before her sister by her father's decree; he also arranges the dowry with her father. Petruchio is then ready to marry Katherine, even against her will.

Book excerpt: 'She's like no one I've ever met... She's like fire and water all at once.' Warwickshire, 1582. Agnes Hathaway, a natural healer, meets the Latin tutor, William Shakespeare. Drawn together by powerful but hidden impulses, they create a life together and make a family. As William moves to London to discover his place in the world of theatre, Agnes stays at home to raise their three children but she is the constant presence and purpose of his life. When the plague steals 11-year-old Hamnet from his loving parents, they must each confront their loss alone. And yet, out of the greatest suffering, something of extraordinary wonder is born. This new play based on Maggie O'Farrell's best-selling novel and adapted by award-winning playwright Lolita Chakrabarti (Life of Pi, Red Velvet, Hymn), pulls back a curtain on the imagined family life of the greatest writer in the English language. Hamnet is a love letter to passion, birth, grief and the magic of nature. This updated and revised edition was published to coincide with the West End transfer of the original RSC production in October 2023.

Book excerpt: "The Taming of the Shrew" is a comedic play by way of William Shakespeare that revolves around the courtship and marriage of contrasting personalities, Katherine and Petruchio. Set in the Italian town of Padua, the tale explores issues of gender roles, strength dynamics, and the nature of affection. The play opens with a rich nobleman named Baptista Minola, who has daughters: the beautiful and slight-mannered Bianca, and the pointy-tongued and rebellious Katherine, regularly referred to as the shrew. Baptista declares that Bianca can't marry till Katherine finds a husband, as he fears her sturdy personality will scare away suitors. Various suitors, consisting of Gremio and Hortensio, vie for Bianca's hand, however, Baptista's decree proves difficult. However, a newcomer named Petruchio arrives in Padua seeking a wealthy spouse. Hearing of Katherine's dowry, he units his attraction on her, despite her reputation. Petruchio meets Katherine and, undeterred by means of her fiery temper, resolves to woo and marry her. He employs unconventional methods to "tame" her, using tactics inclusive of hunger, sleep deprivation, and mental manipulation. Despite Katherine's initial resistance, she sooner or later succumbs to Petruchio's forceful persona and concurs to marry him. Meanwhile, Hortensio gives up on Bianca and marries a wealthy widow, while Lucentio, any other suitor, disguises himself as a Latin educator named Cambio to win Bianca's affection. They elope and marry in mystery.

Book excerpt: The greatest tragic plays of William Shakespeare--including Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth. What is tragedy? The Elizabethans defined it as a "lofty" play showing "personages of great state" caught up in a "lamentable" action that "beginneth prosperously and endeth unfortunately." Whether judged by this or any other standard, the plays selected for this collection are considered to be the four central works of Shakespearean tragedy and must be included in any list of the world's finest tragic literature. And to make these plays more accessible for the modern reader, this edition includes the following special features:
