Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a unique view of the work of the great Italian violin-makers from the 17th to the 19th centuries, based on the collection of The Royal Academy of Music in London. The Academy, founded in 1822, is Britain's senior conservatory and one of the oldest institutions in the world for advanced musical training. Included here are masterpieces by Amati, Cappa, Celoniato, Ceruti, Dalla Costa, Deconet, Gagliano, Grancino, Guadagnini, Guarneri, Landolfi, Pressenda, Rota, Rugeri, Seraphin, Sorsana, Stradivari, Tecchler, and Testore. This revised edition has an updated descriptive text, features 15 extra entries, devotes at least two full-color spreads to each instrument, and is supplemented with a new dendrochronological study. Specially-commissioned photographs display each violin, viola, or cello with large, high-quality illustrations, revealing details of these instruments as never before. The Academy's collection of stringed instruments consists of around 100 violins and a similar combined number of violas and celli, the majority of which were received as gifts over the last century, beginning with the Rutson Bequest in 1906. These working instruments are maintained in fine playing condition and generally are in the hands of young musicians during their time as students or at the outset of their careers. The fine selection presented here underlines the collection's core of masterpiece Italian violins, and for the most part this book includes only those instruments in the purest state of conservation.

Book excerpt: *A RADIO 4 BOOK OF THE WEEK* 'Utterly enthralling - a beautifully-written voyage of discovery that takes us deep into the heart of music-making' Deborah Moggach From the moment she hears Lev's violin for the first time, Helena Attlee is captivated. She is told that it is an Italian instrument, named after its former Russian owner. Eager to discover all she can about its ancestry and the stories contained within its delicate wooden body, she sets out for Cremona, birthplace of the Italian violin. This is the beginning of a beguiling journey whose end she could never have anticipated. Making its way from dusty workshops, through Alpine forests, cool Venetian churches, glittering Florentine courts, and far-flung Russian flea markets, Lev's Violin takes us from the heart of Italian culture to its very furthest reaches. Its story of luthiers and scientists, princes and orphans, musicians, composers, travellers and raconteurs swells to a poignant meditation on the power of objects, stories and music to shape individual lives and to craft entire cultures.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cremona: An Account of the Italian Violin-Makers and Their Instruments Although many experts have already set forth the result of their knowledge and skill in publications of more or less merit on the subject of bowed instruments, there is still a want which it would be as desirable as praiseworthy to supply, that is, as regards the characteristic features of the Italian masters of the art of violin-making. The Author has set himself the task of collecting, as much from the actual instruments themselves, as from ancient and modern literature, both foreign and native, the names of the masters with the greatest possible accuracy and care, and also of describing the work of each individual. He has omitted to dwell upon those stringed instruments which preceded the violin, and from which it may have been developed, because those materials have been sufficiently dealt with; and he begins with the origin of the violin itself, so that the reader may learn how to estimate the genuineness and the value of the Italian instruments, so far as it may be possible from the description accorded to them. Although many instruments have passed through the Authors hands, he is still far from saying that he has seen all those which are described here. He mentions with peculiar pleasure an excellent work from which he has learnt much, and of which he has made use, and he can do this with the greater confidence because the author of that work is known to him personally as an authority of the first rank in his art. The title of this work is "The Violin: its Famous Makers and their Imitators," by George Hart. London, 1875.
