Book excerpt: Dr. Steven Q. Wang, a world-renowned skin cancer expert, provides an essential guide for people with melanoma and their families. The book’s unique, practical format approaches the disease in two phases, just as people with melanoma need to do. First comes a step-by-step guide for what Dr. Wang calls the "mad rush" phase—an intense and stressful period from diagnosis to completing initial treatment. Dr. Wang's calm guidance helps readers through this critical time, using an easy to understand plan for ensuring optimal treatment and survival outcomes. Once the mad rush phase is over, the "marathon phase" begins—life resumes its normal shape but with lingering concerns about new melanoma and metastases. Here Dr. Wang addresses common questions about prevention and prognosis. Beating Melanoma offers current research in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of melanoma; photographs of different kinds of skin cancers; and a readable narrative that demystifies everything from the pathology report to the stages of cancer. The only book to outline detailed instructions for melanoma patients at all stages of their disease, it is a guide that people with melanoma will turn to with confidence.

If you're a melanoma patient, you should know. Unfortunately, most melanoma literature focuses on prevention. Patients receive a terrifying, life-threatening diagnosis and subsequently find a scarcity of information on treatment options. Melanoma: Not Just Skin Cancer is the book to fill that void. Written by a melanoma survivor with extensive knowledge of breakthrough technologies, scientific research, clinical trials, and patient empowerment, it's a comprehensive guide to navigating melanoma treatment. Real-life success stories will inspire patients to fight for their own health and remind them that they are not alone. Catherine M. Poole survived a melanoma diagnosis twenty-five years ago. Yale University Press published her first book on this topic, Melanoma Prevention, Detection, and Treatment, in 1998 and a revised edition in 2005. Today, she's a noted expert on melanoma treatment and an advocate for research and patient empowerment"--Back cover

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 2013, Gordon Cornwall’s melanoma went metastatic and spread to his brain. He and his wife, Claudia, thought it was “game-over.” But his oncologist encouraged them to look for a clinical trial that might work for his form of melanoma. After embarking on a continent-wide search, they found a study in Texas with spots for just two more patients. They scrambled to get Gordon enrolled, and in August 2013, three days after he had his first infusion, he was astonished to see a lump on his shoulder softening and shrinking. Three months later, in November, a CT-scan revealed that all his tumors had disappeared. This story of one couple’s battle to beat melanoma illustrates how a new treatment, immunotherapy, can defeat even aggressive forms of the disease. It also shows how patients can access the most advanced therapies by enrolling in clinical trials. Claudia describes Gordon’s case and learns from conversations with eminent researchers. She paints a portrait of an illness that is difficult but not impossible to combat. With vivid firsthand accounts from their diaries, as well as Claudia’s intimate narrative of the ups and downs of cancer treatment, this book will be a ready resource for melanoma patients and their families. It demonstrates how they can fight the disease medically as well as support each other emotionally and physically.

Book excerpt: Win the Fight: Stomp Out Melanoma is an all-encompassing book that covers everything from melanoma skin cancer risk factors and diagnosis procedures to living well after treatment. With greater public awareness, early detection of melanoma skin cancer is on the rise while mortality rates are declining. This medical guide emphasizes that all patients should be well-informed decision-makers in their own treatment. It is updated with the latest patient treatment guidelines along with an advanced dictionary of cancer-related terms and critical questions to ask your health-care administrator Melanoma Specialist, Dr. Deepak Narayan, a renowned skin cancer expert and Surgical Oncologist, joined forces with Fitness and Metabolic Expert, spiritual mentor, and award-winning author Lisa Lynn to provide patients and their families with everything they need to know to Stomp Out Melanoma and Win the Fight against this deadly disease. Lynn's perspective as a former melanoma patient offers the unique perspective of both survivor and thriver. This book also offers insight into the emotional issues that directly affect treatment success and provides the healthy steps needed to win this battle, while staying healthy for life physically, mentally, and spiritually. The practical format approaches the disease in phases, making it easier for melanoma patients to comprehend. It starts with a step-by-step process that Dr. Narayan refers to the "you just found out phase." This is the most stressful and intense phase that ranges from the diagnosis to initial treatment. Dr. Narayan's peaceful "keep it simple" approach helps patients and readers through this intense, critical time, with an easy-to-understand plan to help maximize cancer treatment with holistic nutrition, exercise, and stress reduction. Win the Fight does not stop there, however. After the initial phase is over the "real life, ongoing phase" begins. Life resumes its normal pace but, as most patients will admit, there is nothing normal about life anymore. They would all admit to living life with fears and lingering concerns about a new melanoma popping up, as well as metastasis. Both Dr. Narayan and Lynn address the common questions and fears while emphasizing that prevention is the ultimate cure. Win the Fight is a must-have guide for real people who are afflicted with any disease that affects the quality of life. More importantly, it brings hope to patients, families and caregivers. It offers a road map that leads to both surviving and thriving.

Book excerpt: How John Hall's book is different from others **John was diagnosed with Melanoma Cancer IV, had surgery to remove 10 metasticized tumors, but afterwards was informed by his Oncologist M.D. that there was little or no hope for recovery-- since Chemo and Radiation Therapy do not work on Melanoma, John felt like he was facing immediate death in the next few months. However under the guidance of a Holistic Nutritionist he was able to rebuild his Immune System. As a result, 2 years later, has conquered his cancer. **As an ex Premedical student, John had studied Inorganic and Organic Chemistry so that he has been able to do research on the causes, preventions, and possible cures for cancers. **John is currently a Family Therapist in Roseville, Ca, and for the past 30 years has counseled the emotional and psychological issues of his clients. He now also counsels cancer patients related to their emotional and relationship problems. [email protected] **His major goal is to help others build up their Immune System. He believes, from experience, cancer can be cured with proper nutrition. The book cover is a microscopic image of a neutrofil swallowing the anthrax bacteria, as the best proof of EVIDENCE-BASED NUTRITION IN SCIENCE TODAY(an example of how the human immune system's defenses are what prevent diseases and cancers). Further explained in Chapter 3 of the book. **The material he presents is brief, in summary form, and is easy to read. He makes suggestions of the best foods to eat, supplements, and healthy waters to consider. **John learned doctors are not gods, don't have the answers to what cures cancers, and patients need to become aware that a healthy nutritional approach for their condition is a viable and doable program. He did it an won. He hopes you will too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I know the importance of the individual experience of metastacised melanoma cancer, because it is a very special journey. People are prone to forget, such as when one forgets they have a finger, until they hit it; people also forget they have a life until it is very seriously threatened. The worst sentence in this world that a doctor can pronounce is, I am sorry, but the medical profession can do nothing further for you. This work explores how my wife, Jeannie, who was my home caregiver, and I travelled the cancer journey together. The journey was not the same for Jeannie as it was for meit was my melanoma cancer, but I was Jeannies husband, and therefore the stress was that much more for her, as she never knew what further stresses she had to face. This book examines the strengths of our relationship, despite the difficulties of living on an island. It is interesting how we were aware of these difficulties, and yet we worked through them. Then came the details of how the cancer was treated, both by conventional and alternative treatment. My alternative treatment had a journey all of its own, incorporating several people, all of whom were heroes in their own right. This alternative treatment was later to be regarded as a miracle by several oncologists in a Brisbane hospital. It is a thoughtful, painful, and revealing account of the years spent fighting this cancer. This book is educative, giving a report on melanoma. Mainly, the message it brings is one of hope for those who now have seemingly no hope against melanoma. I had three CT scans and a bone scan in May 2012, proving I am still free of melanoma.
