Book excerpt: A much-needed reminder about what it means to be truly human in a world where people feel increasingly disconnected from each other and from God, by the popular author of Enter Wild. “Carlos has created an antidote to what ails us.”—New York Times bestselling author Jon Acuff These are crazy times, people. We are more agitated than ever. We’re fighting. Wrestling with big issues. Less connected than ever to one another and to God. It’s a perfect storm: debilitating anxiety, crashing relationships, and forgetting what it feels like to, well, be human. In How to Human, author, speaker, and social-media personality Carlos Whittaker offers a fresh vision for becoming the best versions of ourselves. We can refuse to let disagreements define us. We can say no to becoming upset, rage-filled humans and say yes to fuller, happier lives. It begins as we make the shift from “me” to “we” to “everybody” in a three-part journey to be human, see fellow humans, and free those around us. You’ll think, laugh, and be inspired by this practical guide, which reveals how to help others, how to hope fiercely, and how to experience the thrill of being fully human. Carlos describes a radical path of love—one that requires us to become builders rather than demolitionists. One that gets personal. One that moves toward others in faith rather than away in fear. One that, when times get crazy, is willing to get crazier (in a good way). One that understands the big joy of how to human.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numerous anti-bullying programs in schools across the United States have done little to reduce the number of reported bullying instances. One reason for this is that little attention has been paid to the role of the media and popular culture in adolescents' bullying and mean-girl behavior. This book addresses media role models in television, film, picture books, and the Internet in the realm of bullying and relational aggression. It highlights portrayals with unproductive strategies that lead to poor resolutions or no resolution at all. Young viewers may learn ineffective, even dangerous, ways of handling aggressive situations. Victims may feel discouraged when they are unable to handle the situation as easily as in media portrayals. They may also feel their experiences are trivialized by comic portrayals. Entertainment programming, aimed particularly at adolescents, often portray adults as incompetent or uncaring and include mean-spirited teasing. In addition, overuse of the term "bully" and defining all bad behavior as "bullying" may dilute the term and trivialize the problem.

Book excerpt: The Washed-Up Fighter Who Can't Play Nice Peter Gaffin can be downright vicious, even while using a wheelchair. For years the former back-alley boxer has not only been terrified men from his past would exact their vengeance, but also of his sexuality. After an incident with the cops, Peter is on his way to prison. Behind bars, he won't be able to repress his fears by being a reclusive alcoholic-or hide himself from the men who once preyed on him. The Protective Prison Guard Drew Greene has been working at Trident Falls Correctional for one reason: to keep track of the facility's most dangerous inmate. The day Peter arrives at the prison, Drew's solitary mission becomes something more. Peter gradually charms him and he wants to keep Peter safe. When he learns they share a dark secret, one that has ruled and ruined both their lives, Drew's horror makes him even more determined to protect Peter. Targeted by Their Past Things look up when Peter is released from prison. Drew takes Peter home and helps him finish his long physical recovery that alcoholism derailed. Stronger and happier, Peter is ready to move on with Drew and try to repair the damage he caused. There is only one problem-Peter and Drew aren't able to outrun their past for long. Can they come together to withstand the fallout from the truths they reveal, or will they both end up in prison... or worse, dead? Bully Rescue portrays a hate group that has been invented. The people in the hate group are not good and are not presented as such; however, Bully Rescue does explore some of the ways individuals might enter and leave those types of harmful associations. As the author, I do not condone or support the ideologies or activities of any hate-based organizations, and this book is in no way meant to romanticize them. Please do not read Bully Rescue if you're sensitive to this type of material.

Book excerpt: Going from being the boy who walks on water in everyone’s eyes, the boy loved by everyone in the community, and the pride of his father’s family to being evil incarnate, the great Satan. A snake to have it head cut off. So much was invested in this boy for him to stay on a path that was walked by his family for many generations. In the eyes of everyone around him taking this path was the only right thing to do. There was no other way. In this environment taking a different path meant being lost. Regardless of the consequences, Emmanuel made a decision to choose a different path after a great encounter with some far greater than his family and friends. This decision was the start of a new life for Emmanuel, for the first time he experienced treatment that was only reserved for enemies in his community. Sometimes the right path is not the easiest one, but it is worth it.

There is so much bullying in our world today, not taking the time to get to know the person, their wisdom, their intelligence, and their harmony, before they're so quickly judged by their appearance. We all came face-to-face with hindrances or barriers in our life. It takes time to get the courage to jump over that hurdle to develop the strength to stand tall. (T. D. Jakes is my inspiration: Allow your enemy be your step stool.) Native words flow like a river. It has no end. Don't allow yourself to sink in the flow of water surrounded by words that has no meaning. Your fight is not against the words that hold your head underwater. Your fight is the fight of survival to rise above the water. Put your hand on your heart. Take a look in the mirror. Your heart beat for you. Love yourself!

Book excerpt: Stand Up, Fight Back is the story of little 9 year old boy in 4th grade being terrorized by bullies every day. It started on the school bus with verbal taunts by the bullies to all the kids. Everyday they systematically made their way around the bus teasing everyone. When it was my turn for ridicule, I tried to ignore them and hoped they would just go away. Eventually the bullies would push further and be more aggressive with their attacks to get a reaction. As they increased pressure, I would try to retreat further into my dark hole of emptiness to get away. This drove them more and more to hurt me. Eventually I caved and started to cry. It was a huge victory for the bullies to get someone to cry. As months went on the attacks became more frequent and also became physical. They would slap my head, flick my ears, punch and poke me. They would pull my shoes off and even throw them out the bus window. And the bullying made it's way off the bus and into school, the schoolyard and even out in public places. I couldn't get away. This book details the dark plight of bullying and abuse that goes on every day in schools all over the country. You hear all the details about how that little boy was systematically broken down into the darkest lows where his soul could go. I discuss the failures of the system along the way as I was being bullied. From the Bus Driver that saw it all, to the principal that heard first hand from my mother about how I looked getting off the bus being beaten to finally the bully's parents denying any wrong doing of their son. Many adults knew what was going on but none did much about it. I conclude the book with some details on how to fix this epidemic. It won't be easy and we'll never wipe it out completely. But we can take a stand against bullying, but we have to do it together. And we have to start now. The first step begins with the parents and ends with the child being bullied. Stand Up, Fight Back.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `jargon-free and concise. This is a very readable, thorough and practical book of use to young people, parents and in particular to school staff in preventing and dealing with bullying' - Counselling Children and Young People (CCYP) '...the authors drive home the strong message that bullying 'should never be accepted' and how it can be life threatening. There is clear evidence that the training is based on current research. I found the format innovative, with the excellent add-on of being able to download PowerPoint training slides from the publisher's website' - Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties `Highly readable and practical, this is a book that provides details of specific ways in which members of the of the school community can collaborate to reduce the incidence of bullying in their school' - Teacher `This is a clearly written and well designed resource. It is likely to be of value to anyone wishing to develop active anti-bullying policies in schools and is designed for use as a staff development tool over a period of time, but is also focused on the needs of parents, children and young people themselves. It providers some excellent guidance on writing an anti-bullying policy, a useful overview of practical strategies to prevent and counter bullying, helpful advice for parents of children who are being bullied, or children who are involved in bullying others ' - SENCO Update `I like the book's message: Bullying is an activity rather than a stereotypical role. It's no blame approach aims to modify behaviour to avoid provoking a cycle of escalating violence' - The Psychologist `This excellent book begins by dispelling some myths, hoping to offer schools constructive ways to tackle this deep-seated problem. Clear courses of action are set out, including some for parents whose children are bullying others, and there are photocopiable training resources in the appendices' TES Special Needs `This is a carefully considered and road-tested book that could be an invaluable resource to staff seeking to develop their school's response to bullying'- Journal of In-Service Education `Dealing with Bullying in Schools is a very readable book and should be available in every school in the country. What the book emphasizes is that bullying is everyone's problem not merely teacher. This includes the Head of the school, parents and everyone who is part of the community within the school' - Dr L F Lowenstein, Educational, Clinical and Forensic Psychological Consultant `The book is strong on practical information, including handouts and overhead projector sheets, for training staff, students and parents'- Geoff Barton, Times Educational Supplement, Friday Magazine Developed from training courses run by the two authors on the subject of dealing with bullying in schools, this book is designed to work as a training manual. It is geared towards the needs of the class teacher, the school management team, the bullied, the bullies and the parents of both parties. Each chapter offers a set of resources with commentaries for these different groups, so that the reader is provided with a complete pack of advice, guidance and resources. The book includes: - a step-by-step guide to formulating an anti-bullying policy for your school; - suggested strategies for countering and preventing bullying; - detailed advice on working with parents; - clear guidance for parents on what to do if their child is being bullied or is doing the bullying; - tailor-made presentations to use with colleagues and parents. Anyone involved in this issue in a school setting should find this book invaluable. To download the PowerPoint slides from the Appendices, please click on 'Sample Chapters and Resources' to the left

Book excerpt: Thirty-something Londoner Nick Leonard spent two months living in a caravan in a friend's back yard in the city of San Luis Obispo on California's Central Coast. His goal was to write a novel but he came back empty-handed, having been irresistibly sidetracked by the temptations of the Californian lifestyle. Expecting a world of Beach Boys lyrics and 90210 brats, Nick was completely unprepared for what he found - a California that belongs to Zombie flash mobs and Poly Dollies, to marauding bears and a train spotting dragon, to drag-wearing Mayhem and Bendy Bike John, to Mona Sleeza and Miss Anita Slapahoe - enough to addle the most ardent of authors. Roller Skaters and Wine Makers provides a sharply observed and humorous account of these distractions from a wholly Brit perspective. Roller Skaters and Wine Makers is sold in aid of the Cardiomyopathy Association
