Book excerpt: Few subjects related to the design or construction of machinery are of greater importance than the subject of bearings. All classes of mechanisms have bearings of some kind and bearings that are properly designed and constructed are a necessity. As every experienced mechanic knows, a poor bearing may tie up a machine or even cause an entire plant to shut down temporarily. Owing to the importance of this subject, designers and mechanics in general should understand the fundamental principles governing bearing design and should know what approved types are in common use on different classes of machinery. This treatise deals exclusively with plain bearings, ball and roller bearings being covered in another book of this series. The types of plain bearings illustrated in a connection with the following chapters were selected to show how designs are modified to suit different conditions, and also practical methods of arranging bearings to insure adequate lubrication and thorough protection against the entrance of any foreign material liable to injure the bearing surfaces. The designs illustrated were taken from actual practice and have proved satisfactory when properly constructed and applied. This treatise contains, in addition to the features mentioned, condensed information on corn- positions of various bearing metals, their properties, the classes of service to which different bearing alloys are adapted, and the general methods of procedure in designing plain bearings to meet different service conditions.

Download or read book Bearings written by M. J. Neale and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bearings: A Tribology Handbook is a practical guide on bearings, based on materials published in the first edition of the Tribology Handbook. The handbook has been updated matching international requirements. The book is divided in four main parts. The first part is a description of different bearing types and forms pertaining to continuous and oscillatory movements. A selection of journal and thrust bearings as to their different load capacity, performance, and special environmental conditions is explained. The second part deals with the physical properties and load capacity of plain bearings. Other kinds of bearing, such as the dry rubbing bearings; porous metal bearings; grease, wick, and drip fed journal bearings; ring and disc fed journal bearings; steady load pressure fed journal bearings; high-speed bearings; and crankshaft bearings, are considered regarding their performance, maintenance, and suitability to specific conditions. The third part focuses on one type of bearing: the rolling bearing. The selection, composition, shaft and housing design, and fitting and mounting for this type is discussed. The last part explains special bearing types such as slide bearings, instrument jewels (which are a combination of a steel pivot and a synthetic sapphire jewel), and electromagnetic bearings that are essentially powerful electromagnets. The need for surface treatments and coatings is then explained for optimum usage. The handbook is useful for design engineers, mechanical engineers, and material researchers. Mechanical, aeronautical, and automotive students; car mechanics; and those interested in machine and car maintenance will find this handbook a handy reference.

Download or read book Workshop Practice written by S.K. Yadav and published by Discovery Publishing House. This book was released on 2006 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Workshop Practice has been expanding explosively during the past decade and the initial concept of this book was simply to collate some of the newer and easy applicable methods particularly those involving some degree of automation. This plan was altered in favour of treatise that not only brings workshop methodology up-to-date but also includes representative protocols for the application of these techniques. Accordingly, over a hundred authors have pooled their efforts to produce this volume. In so doing, the mutual hope is that it will serve as a reference portfolio to help both the novice and veteran research get on with the job in an inspired efficient and productive manner. On the whole graduating students of most streams of Engineering may find interest in this book and will benefit having one at hand. In the preparation of this book large number of books and research papers have been consulted. So many authenticity is claimed. The author wishes to express to express his deepest appreciation to the many people who have contributed in one way or the other to the preparation of the title. The author will greatly appreciate having his attention called to any questionable statement. Contents: General Introduction, Material Testing Treatment and Properties, Engineering Materials, Metals and Alloys/ Nonferrous, Carpentry Shop and Wood Working Tools, Benchwork and Fitting Shop, Welding Shop, Sheet Metal Work.
Download or read book Alloying written by Joseph R. Davis and published by ASM International. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alloying: Understanding the Basics is a comprehensive guide to the influence of alloy additions on mechanical properties, physical properties, corrosion and chemical behavior, and processing and manufacturing characteristics. The coverage considers "alloying" to include any addition of an element or compound that interacts with a base metal to influence properties. Thus, the book addresses the beneficial effects of major alloy additions, inoculants, dopants, grain refiners, and other elements that have been deliberately added to improve performance, as well the detrimental effects of minor elements or residual (tramp) elements included in charge materials or that result from improper melting or refining techniques. The content is presented in a concise, user-friendly format. Numerous figures and tables are provided. The coverage has been weighted to provided the most detailed information on the most industrially important materials.
Book Synopsis Tribology and Dynamics of Engine and Powertrain by : Homer Rahnejat
Download or read book Tribology and Dynamics of Engine and Powertrain written by Homer Rahnejat and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 1059 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tribology, the science of friction, wear and lubrication, is one of the cornerstones of engineering's quest for efficiency and conservation of resources. Tribology and dynamics of engine and powertrain: fundamentals, applications and future trends provides an authoritative and comprehensive overview of the disciplines of dynamics and tribology using a multi-physics and multi-scale approach to improve automotive engine and powertrain technology.Part one reviews the fundamental aspects of the physics of motion, particularly the multi-body approach to multi-physics, multi-scale problem solving in tribology. Fundamental issues in tribology are then described in detail, from surface phenomena in thin-film tribology, to impact dynamics, fluid film and elastohydrodynamic lubrication means of measurement and evaluation. These chapters provide an understanding of the theoretical foundation for Part II which includes many aspects of the physics of motion at a multitude of interaction scales from large displacement dynamics to noise and vibration tribology, all of which affect engines and powertrains. Many chapters are contributed by well-established practitioners disseminating their valuable knowledge and expertise on specific engine and powertrain sub-systems. These include overviews of engine and powertrain issues, engine bearings, piston systems, valve trains, transmission and many aspects of drivetrain systems. The final part of the book considers the emerging areas of microengines and gears as well as nano-scale surface engineering. With its distinguished editor and international team of academic and industry contributors, Tribology and dynamics of engine and powertrain is a standard work for automotive engineers and all those researching NVH and tribological issues in engineering. - Reviews fundamental aspects of physics in motion, specifically the multi-body approach to multi physics - Describes essential issues in tribology from surface phenomena in thin film tribology to impact dynamics - Examines specific engine and powertrain sub-systems including engine bearings, piston systems and value trains
