Book excerpt: Micah doesn't fit in. He's always been the odd one out when it comes to his brothers. Instead of spending time in the fields with Wyatt and Carter, Micah prefers to work on his computer. Programming and coding makes sense to him. Fixing fences doesn't. When their family opens the ranch to visitors, not much changes for Micah. He's still in charge of the ranch's Internet presence and online marketing. He still spends most of his time in front of a computer. Then one night, a young woman in trouble shows up on his cabin porch, and Micah just can't turn her away. Evelyn is soft, sweet, and completely human. Can Micah save her from her past? Can she save him from his?

Book excerpt: Shapeshifting stories by Tanith Lee, Peter S. Beagle, Midori Snyder, Jane Yolen, and others: “Rich reading that meets the editors’ high standards.” —Kirkus Reviews In world mythology, transformation legends are attached to almost every type of animal: a variety of birds, fish, reptiles, and even insects. In this book, you’ll find stories inspired by such myths from around the world, retold and reimagined by some of the very best writers in the realm of fantasy and science fiction. In “The Puma’s Daughter” by World Fantasy Award–winning author Tanith Lee, a boy betrothed to a girl from a powerful family in the hills hears whispered rumors about his intended that describe her golden hair, her strength—and her ability to transform into a great cat. A man brings his boyfriend to his conservative hometown, teaching his little sister a lot about acceptance—and mermen—in “Map of Seventeen” by Stonewall Honor Award–author Christopher Barzak. And in “The Hikikomori” by Hiromi Goto, winner of the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, a misfit fifteen-year-old girl, bullied at school, discovers her true form—and heroic purpose. “Twenty-two short stories and poems speak to the fascination with therianthropy (animal-human metamorphosis). From riffs on Beauty and the Beast to original tales of sexuality and an adolescent yeti, well-known fantasy and sci-fi authors create morsels that address themes as varied as coming-of-age and the environment—all while changing people into animals and vice versa.” —Booklist “This collection will appeal to fantasy lovers as it provides both stories by beloved authors and exciting new voices to discover.” —School Library Journal “A top-to-bottom very readable, engaging, book.” —SF Site

Book Synopsis Voices of Foreign Brides by : Choong Soon Kim

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1990s, there has been a critical shortage of marriageable women in farming and fishing villages in Korea. This shortage, which has become a major social problem, resulted from a mass exodus of Korean women to cities and industrial zones. Korea's efforts to give rural bachelors a chance to marry have succeeded in providing 120,146 brides from 123 countries. However, the Korean government has proven to be ill-prepared to deal with the problems that foreign brides have encountered: family squabbles, prejudice, discrimination, divorce, suicide, and many adversities. The UN Commission on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination warned Korea to stop mistreatment of foreign brides and their children, those of so-called mixed blood, on account of human rights violations. This book comprehensively covers Korean multiculturalism, with a focus on the foreign brides. In a two-pronged ethnographic approach, it offers a historical account of Korean immigration and naturalization, while also relating that past to the contemporary situation. As more and more people cross national boundaries, this detailed description of Korean multiculturalism serves as a valuable case study for an increasingly globalized world. Kim tells the stories of these voiceless women in a compassionate manner.

Book excerpt: Don't judge a prince by his fur. After her father threatens to marry her to a dull farmer, free-spirited Sophie runs away from the only home she's ever known and sets off into the world, seeking adventure and romance. But instead of excitement, she finds a forlorn castle and the solitary prince who lives there. For twenty years, Henri has been shrouded in mystery and speculation. He's a legend, a nightmare, a blight upon his fair kingdom. Though Sophie knows it would be wiser to return home, she's inexplicably drawn to the man of shadows. But it doesn't take Sophie long to realize that falling for the cursed prince might prove to be more of an adventure than she ever bargained for... A Bear's Bride is a romantic fairy tale novella. It can be read on its own but is more fun when read as a part of the Entwined Tales, a series of interconnected fairy tales by six different authors. Each story follows the adventures of one of seven children from the same family as they seek out their own happily ever afters in spite of their reluctant fairy-godfather.
