Book excerpt: A stepper motor controlled wire scanner system has recently been modified to support testing of the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) Collider-Accelerator department's Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) beam position monitor (BPM) system. The ERL BPM consists of four 9.33 mm diameter buttons mounted at 90 degree spacing in a cube with 1.875 inch inside diameter. The buttons were designed by BNL and fabricated by Times Microwave Systems. Libera brilliance single pass BPM electronic modules with 700 MHz bandpass filter, manufactured by Instrumentation Technologies, will be used to measure the transverse beam positions at 14 locations around the ERL. The wire scanner assembly provides the ability to measure the BPM button response to a pulsed wire, and evaluate and calibrate the Libera position measurement electronics. A description of the wire scanner system and test result data will be presented.

This line transports a chopped, RF modulated H- beam from the 200 MeV Linac to the AGS Booster. Over a 15dB dynamic range in beam current, the position monitor system provides a real-time, normalized position signal with an analog bandwidth of about 20 MHz. Seven directional coupler style pickups are installed in the line with each pickup sensing both horizontal and vertical position. Analog processing electronics are located in the tunnel and incorporate the amplitude modulation to phase modulation normalization technique. To avoid interference from the 200 MHz linac RF system, processing is performed at 400 MHz. This paper will provide a system overview and report results from the commissioning experience.

Log amplifiers used for signal processing have a dynamic range of 40 dB and are scaled for 50 mV/dB sensitivity. In this paper we describe the design of the detectors, the signal processing electronics, and the results of the position-to-signal mapping using a wire. Beam position measurements using a prototype detector and electronics on the APS linac test stand are discussed.

When fully completed, the accelerator will consist of a photoinjector, one International Liner Collider (ILC)-type cryomodule, multiple accelerator R & D beamlines, and a downstream beamline to inject 300 MeV electrons into the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA). We calculated the total energy of the beam and the corresponding energy to the Electron Gun and CC2. Subsequently, a Beam Position Monitors (BPM) error analysis was done, to calculate the device actual resolution.

Book excerpt: CEBAF is a recirculating linac where the beam passes several times through the linac structures. As a result, up to five beams of different energies may be present in the same linac vacuum chambers simultaneously. One method of distinguishing between the beams involves modulating the current for a time interval of less than one revolution period. In this paper, a very simple low cost beam position monitor system based on the detection of this modulation is presented. Initial results indicated that 1mm displacements for beam currents of 1 micro-amp can be measured. With the incorporation of several improvements to the present monitor design, the sensitivity is expected to be increased to 1 mm for a 100 nA beam.
