They stood holding their three-year-old son Mattie’s hand outside a large empty house sitting high on the dunes overlooking the beach. “Perfect,” Claire thought. The sale sign said four bedrooms upstairs, and two down. Nothing had been done to the house in several years, and it was in bad need of restoration to bring it up to date. However, this was not what the five resident ghosts wanted who lived in the house. They wanted their home to stay just the way it was when they were alive; and bound and determined that it would, they did everything they could think of to run the new owners out.
Book Synopsis The Interaction of Ocean Waves and Wind by : Peter Janssen
Download or read book The Interaction of Ocean Waves and Wind written by Peter Janssen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-10-28 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was published in 2004. The Interaction of Ocean Waves and Wind describes in detail the two-way interaction between wind and ocean waves and shows how ocean waves affect weather forecasting on timescales of 5 to 90 days. Winds generate ocean waves, but at the same time airflow is modified due to the loss of energy and momentum to the waves; thus, momentum loss from the atmosphere to the ocean depends on the state of the waves. This volume discusses ocean wave evolution according to the energy balance equation. An extensive overview of nonlinear transfer is given, and as a by-product the role of four-wave interactions in the generation of extreme events, such as freak waves, is discussed. Effects on ocean circulation are described. Coupled ocean-wave, atmosphere modelling gives improved weather and wave forecasts. This volume will interest ocean wave modellers, physicists and applied mathematicians, and engineers interested in shipping and coastal protection.

Book excerpt: This book analyses the relation between different discourses and actors through an ethnographic approach, showing not only how fishermen in Slovenia respond to international political economy, how they struggle to survive but also how they generate small changes. Fishing in the northeastern part of the Adriatic Sea makes for a substantial economy anchored in many stories. Regional conflicts, wars, the demise of empires and the rise of nation states with ensuing maritime border issues, socialist heritage, transnational and transformational processes in Europe, and the growth of capitalist relations between production and consumption in coastal areas, have all contributed to the specific discourses that have affected this relatively under-researched area. How this complex, layered and ambiguous quarrelling is constituted at different levels and how this situation is lived and experienced by the local fishermen working along the present Slovene coast effectively forms the core of this book.

Book excerpt: After their mother is killed by a stray bullet, twin Chilean brothers Benjamin and JC Piñera are swept up in their country’s infamous Cold War-era crisis, which culminates in a coup and a dead president. The boys and their embittered father flee to California, only for the twins to see their refugee life jettison them into another civil war, as naturalized citizens drafted and sent to Vietnam. The boys become Special Ops soldiers, mercenaries stalking the Viet Cong through the dark-hearted jungles of Southeast Asia, until they must escape to save themselves and their best friend. Told through Benjamin’s eyes—now an immigrant grandpa living in the California hills, yet haunted by ghosts from the past—our poignant narrator finally returns to Chile to search for any signs of the family, and the woman he loved, that were left behind.
