Book excerpt: Beach profile lines at 21 near-evenly spaced intervals along Holden Beach, North Carolina, between Lockwoods Folly and Shallotte Inlets, were measured from November 1970 to December 1974. These have been analyzed to determine the spatial and temporal variabilities on long-term, seasonal, and short-term scales. Profile lines near the inlets showed the greatest variability in mean sea level (MSL) position, above MSL volume, foreshore slope, and profile envelope. This variability near Lockwoods Folly Inlet was partly enhanced by artificial nourishment at profile line 2. Temporary, low-cost shore protection devices (e.g., sandbag groins) were constructed near that inlet during part of the study. No other modifications or activities that affected beach processes were known to occur during the study period. The central part of Holden Beach was studied separately because of the high variability of the inlet sections at either end of the island. Foreshore slopes along this reach increased from an average of 1:30 at the east end to 1:17 at the west. A seasonal change in above MSL volume indicates loss of sand during autumn and winter, and gain during spring and summer. Changes in MSL shoreline intercept and above MSL volume were highly variable during the study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beach profile line data collected as part of the Beach Evaluation Program were examined for sites located at Milford and Fairfield, Connecticut. A total of seven profile lines were examined using standard measurements such as mean sea level intercept, above mean sea level volume, and linear wave refraction plots, as well as empirical eigenfunction analyses. All these methods showed erosion at all the lines at Milford, while Fairfield showed accretion at two out of three lines. Erosion rate for both beaches varied from 0.096 to 2.886 meters per year. The most significant factors affecting the short-term variability in beach volume are storm activity and wind direction. Each of the beaches is affected by longshore transport; however, transport at Milford is limited due to high-density shorefront housing and associated roads and seawalls, Fairfield favors northeast transport, but rates are unknown. Sediment supply for the beaches is limited, but both beaches are subject to onshore-offshore sediment transport. Neither of the beaches showed any significant seasonal changes. The characteristics of the Connecticut beaches differ markedly form other, less sheltered beaches studied in this program, as they appear relatively stable and dominated by long-term trends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What sight is more beautiful than a high-energy beach facing lines of rolling white breakers? What battleground is more ferocious than where waves and sand meet? What environment could be more exciting to study than this sandy interface between sea and land? And yet how much do we know about sandy beaches? Open sandy beaches are amongst the most neglected fields of scientific study in the coastal environment. This situation exists despite their great extent along most temperate and tropical coastlines and their value as recreational areas and buffer zones against the sea. The traditional oceanographer does not venture into the surf zone while the terrestrial ecologist stops short at the high water mark. Only a few coastal engineers have grappled with the problem of sand and sediment movement as it influences their construction of harbours and pipelines. The marine biologist on the other hand has regarded estuaries, coral reefs and rocky shores, obviously teeming with life, as more fruitful areas for study than the apparently poor animal life on sandy beaches. Sandy beaches have therefore tended to become a scientific no man's land. Over the last decade this situation has begun to improve. Recent work on high-energy beaches has revealed that they may in fact be rich and productive and fertile areas for study. It has even been suggested that beaches and their adjacent surf zones may constitute viable marine ecosystems.

Book excerpt: This bibliography supersedes the Bibliography of Publications of the Coastal Engineering Research Center and the Beach Erosion Board by Andre Szuwalski and Linda Clark, dated December 1981. It is a listing of publications issued by the Coastal Engineering Research Center (CERC) and its predecessor, the Beach Erosion Board, before 1 July 1983, when CERC became part of the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experimental Station. All CERC publications issued after that date are listed in the List of Publications of the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station.
