Book excerpt: In April 1988 a major in-depth study of the Scotia-Fundy lobster fishery was announced by the federal government to review all the major issues facing the industry and address the long-term social and economic viability of the fishery and of the communities which depend on it. The study would include the biological, licensing, management, marketing, and enforcements aspects. This study contains a comprehensive overview of the fishery, emphasizing recent developments. It examines the community base in which the fishery takes place and analyzes the resource according to current scientific understanding. It examines the harvesting, processing and marketing components and describes the DFO management regime and its related costs. On the basis of an extensive consultative process, with generally good participation by the industry, it presents the current views and concerns of fishermen on issues they consider of primary importance.

Multiple fora are trying to incrementally shift the fisheries management course towards a sustainable future. Recasting Transboundary Fisheries Management Arrangements in Light of Sustainability Principles reviews and critiques key recasting efforts with a primary focus on Canada’s transboundary fisheries management arrangements for the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. It provides a primer on the international law and policy framework governing transboundary fisheries and offers bilateral and regional case studies in the search for more principled fisheries governance approaches based on the new sustainability imperatives. This book offers current Canadian and international perspectives on the challenges facing regional fisheries management organizations, as well as bilateral and national arrangements, as they face the tides of sustainability reform. Struggles to implement precautionary and ecosystem approaches are especially highlighted.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North Atlantic right whales (Eubalaena glacialis) are among the most critically endangered cetacean species in the world. Despite having protected status, both internationally and in Canadian waters, the right whale population that frequents Canadian waters remains at low abundance, with an estimated population of around 325 individuals (EC 2006). It has been estimated that at least thirty percent of right whale deaths result from their interaction with human activities, and entanglement in fishing gear is a significant cause for known injury and mortality (Knowlton and Kraus 2001). This report has identified the different gear types and fisheries that right whales encounter in Scotia-Fundy region, as well as the potential they pose for entanglement. Commercial landings data for the time series between 1999 and 2005 inclusive were used to assess the spatial and temporal distribution of fishing activity. These fishery distributions were compared to the patterns of right whale aggregation in Scotia-Fundy waters in order to estimate the potential for right whale/gear interaction among the different gear types/fisheries over time and space. Of all the gears that right whales encounter in their summer habitat, the groundfish gillnet, groundfish hook and line, and crab trap fisheries pose the greatest potential for entanglement. These gear types are relatively more likely to lead to entanglement because (1) these are the most active fisheries in Scotia-Fundy during the period of right whale aggregation, and (2) the design of the gears and their methods of deployment lend themselves to possible entanglements. The results of this study may be used to advise industry and management on actions that would minimize the risk of entanglement to right whales, while correspondingly minimizing any disruption of the commercial fisheries in the Scotia-Fundy region

Chang and published by St. Andrew's, N.B. : Fisheries and Oceans Canada. This book was released on 2005 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Brunswick finfish aquaculture industry is concentrated in the southwestern portion of the province, in the lower Bay of Fundy. Within this area there are few nearshore locations remaining for new aquaculture operations. Open ocean (offshore or exposed) aquaculture may be the only option to allow expansion of the finfish aquaculture industry. In order to assist both the aquaculture industry and coastal zone managers, we conducted a preliminary analysis of coastal zone management issues related to the feasibility of open ocean farms in the Bay of Fundy. We gathered existing geo-referenced information on oceanographic conditions, salmon aquaculture, commercial fisheries, species at risk, ecologically sensitive areas, shipping, and other activities. The information was gathered from scientific publications, other publications, websites, and interviews with government employees. For some important activities, such as the lobster fishery, and some species at risk, such as the endangered inner Bay of Fundy wild salmon, there is very little geo-referenced data available on the locations of essential areas. The preliminary analysis indicates that, while some degree of conflict may occur over much of the Bay of Fundy, there may be some areas where open ocean aquaculture could take place, with relatively little conflict. However, more detailed investigations and consultations are recommended in order to confirm existing data, to gather data where it is lacking, and to examine the potential for aquaculture to coexist with any existing uses or activities
