Book excerpt: This study of military historiography examines the changing narrative of the Battle of New Orleans through two centuries of commemoration. Once celebrated on par with the Fourth of July, the anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans is no longer a day of reverence for most Americans. The United States’ stunning defeat of the British army on January 8th, 1815, gave rise to the presidency of Andrew Jackson, the Democratic Party, and the legend of Jean Laffite. Yet the battle has not been a national holiday since 1861. Joseph F. Stoltz III explores how generations of Americans have consciously revised, reinterpreted, and reexamined the memory of the conflict to fit the cultural and social needs of their time. Combining archival research with deep analyses of music, literature, theater, and film across two centuries of American popular culture, Stoltz highlights the myriad ways in which politicians, artists, academics, and ordinary people have rewritten the battle’s history. From Andrew Jackson’s presidential campaign to the occupation of New Orleans by the Union Army to the Jim Crow era, the continuing reinterpretations of the battle alienated whole segments of the American population from its memorialization. Thus, a close look at the Battle of New Orleans offers an opportunity to explore not just how events are collectively remembered across generations but also how a society discards memorialization that is no longer necessary or palatable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of New Orleans Reconsidered arose organically from the rich heritage of St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. The same land that was witness to the Battle of New Orleans would also spawn a unique and vibrant culture known for close-knit families, good food, refineries and the activities centered around the bountiful wetlands. Academic cultural offerings were rare when the Nunez History Lecture Series began in 2001. Some folks at Nunez Community College, the only institution of higher education in the Parish, decided to tell the stories of the people of St. Bernard and Louisiana, hoping that a handful of others might also be interested. After 14 seasons of over 100 lectures and an average attendance of over 100 people, the Lecture Series is still finding new stories to tell. A natural outgrowth of the Lecture Series was to feature a more detailed treatment of the second most important historical event in St. Bernard Parish history, the Battle of New Orleans. And the College was the natural place since the battlefield was in sight of the campus on a clear day. However, the plans for the first Symposium were delayed by a few years when the most important historical event in St. Bernard Parish history, Hurricane Katrina, left six feet of water across the Nunez campus and up to seventeen feet of water across the rest of the Parish. By January of 2013, the first Battle of New Orleans Historical Symposium was held at the College, with the audience likely sitting in the exact spot that soldiers mustered for the Battle. Once the Symposium became established and successful, the only nagging problem was the ephemeral nature of the knowledge being created. With some of the most passionate and knowledgeable speakers in the nation, it just seemed natural to expand and preserve the great information being presented. So in a labor of love, many of the top lecturers agreed to put pen to paper and tell the story of the Battle of New Orleans in greater detail. The result is The Battle of New Orleans Reconsidered

Book excerpt: The books in the Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series demonstrate the University Press of Florida’s long history of publishing Latin American and Caribbean studies titles that connect in and through Florida, highlighting the connections between the Sunshine State and its neighboring islands. Books in this series show how early explorers found and settled Florida and the Caribbean. They tell the tales of early pioneers, both foreign and domestic. They examine topics critical to the area such as travel, migration, economic opportunity, and tourism. They look at the growth of Florida and the Caribbean and the attendant pressures on the environment, culture, urban development, and the movement of peoples, both forced and voluntary. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series gathers the rich data available in these architectural, archaeological, cultural, and historical works, as well as the travelogues and naturalists’ sketches of the area prior to the twentieth century, making it accessible for scholars and the general public alike. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series is made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, under the Humanities Open Books program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important themes in US history is the series of struggles that transformed the Southwest from a Spanish to an American possession: the Texas Revolution of 1836 and the Mexican–American War of 1845. But what if historians have been overlooking a key event that led to these wars—another war almost entirely unknown—that took place on what is now US soil and dramatically shaped the development of the American Southwest to this day? The true story of this war, presented in The Lost War for Texas: Mexican Rebels, American Burrites, and the Texas Revolution of 1811, is only now being revealed by never-before-published research, which will challenge paradigms and reshape much of what we know about United States, Texas, and even Mexican history. In the early 1800s, the impact of the Napoleonic Wars rippled across the Atlantic. Within weeks of the United States’s declaration of war on England in 1812, hundreds of western militia forces rallied to a flag and marched boldly to war—but not for the United States. They instead invaded the province of Texas to make common cause with Mexican rebels who had launched their struggle against the Spanish monarchy the year before. The resulting war changed the Southwest forever. Author James Aalan Bernsen places a spotlight on division and separatism at this pivotal moment of the “second revolution” of the United States. The Lost War for Texas, by revealing the forgotten war of 1811–1812 will profoundly change how we understand the birth of the American Southwest.

Book excerpt: Originally commissioned in 1984, this report deals with the historical geography and archeology of the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812 as it pertained to the Chalmette Battlefield. It touches upon how people put the battlefield to use after the War of 1812 as a place for generations of people as they live, work, and play. Also covered are some of the things, both bad and good, we have done over the years to commemorate the battle and remember this important event in our nation's past.
