Book excerpt: Excerpt from Battle-Fields and Victory: A Narrative of the Principle Military Operations of the Civil War From the Accession of Grant to the Command of the Union Armies to the End of the War It was far different in the South. Its sparsely settled territory could not long meet the heavy demands for more soldiers which the military authori ties continually made. In the earliest days Of the war the Confederate Congress authorized the drafting Of every able-bodied white man between the ages of eighteen and forty-five. After the costly defeat at Gettysburg, the conscription was rigidly enforced, and the privilege so generally em joyed in the North Of buying a substitute was denied to conscripts. The land was literally swept clean Of able-bodied white men, and the exten sion of the conscription law to permit the enrollment of boys Of sixteen and men of sixty in the reserve or home guard, led General Grant to write that the Confederate authorities robbed alike the cradle and the grave. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Battle-Fields of '61: A Narrative of the Military Operations of the War for the Union Up to the End of the Peninsular Campaign The third period dates from the accession of General Grant to the supreme command of the Union armies. Before the constant and merciless blows of the Great Hammerer the Confederate armies wasted away. It was an era of fighting against fate. All hope of victory was dead. The one chance of success for the Confederates lay in the recognition of the Confederacy by some foreign power, which should give them succor and assistance. Clinging to this desperate hope they fought a dilatory warfare against overwhelming odds, until the surrender of Lee at Appomattox happily ended the fratricidal war. Under the title Battle Fields of '61 I have tried to tell the story of the first period of this protracted struggle. In telling it I have ever kept in mind the fact that military genius and human bravery must always awaken admiration, even when enlisted in support of a cause which we may regard as eternally wrong. The march of time has put the civil war and its causes far behind us. Let us recognize the sincerity and conscientiousness of the men who drew the sword in support of the South, and accept the records of their valor, persever ance, and uncomplaining endurance as a part of the glorious heritage of the people of the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Battle Fields and Camp Fires: A Narrative of the Principle Military Operations of the Civil War From the Removal of McClellan to the Accession of Grant, (1862-1863) In telling the story of this period I have confined myself to describing the chief battles, with but a brief survey of the strategy, maneuvers, and minor engagements leading up to them. It has been my aim to describe the salient features of the war, leaving out alto gether the details of petty skirmishes, raids, demonstrations, and inde cisive engagements which serve only to impede the course of the narra tive, and to confuse the youthful reader who wishes to learn how the people of the South fought to achieve independence, and how the men of the North strove successfully to maintain the Union.
