Book excerpt: This report documents the design and development of 13 courses of instruction for the Battalion-Battle Staff Training system (BN-BSTS). BSTS is a set of training materials for battalion-level staff officers, a mixture of text and CD-ROM computer-based instruction (CBI). Designed for stand alone or local area network linked training systems, the BN-BSTS was developed for use by the U.S. Army National Guard (ARNG). Part of the training challenge for ARNG combat arms staff members is due to conflicts with other duties. To help alleviate this problem, distributed, multimedia (paper-based and computer based), individualized instruction for battalion staff personnel was developed. The resulting BSTS project provides a prototype staff officer training program with courses which cover individual battalion staff functional areas and those individual tasks required to prepare the battle staff members for collective battle staff tasks. This project, sponsored under the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) program umbrella of Simulation in Training for Advanced Readiness (SIMITAR), is coordinated with two other programs: Simulation-Based Multiechelon Training for Armor Units (SIMUTA) and Combat Service Support (CSS) Training System Development for the National Guard.
