Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Basset Hound has an unmistakable profile. They have the long, square snout, muscular body, and loose skin of their Bloodhound ancestors, but with short legs and a long, sabre-shaped tail. The olfactory ability of this breed is second only to the Bloodhound itself, and they are unrelenting once they have caught a scent. Both the short legs and the long, upwardly curved tail-which is tipped in white-are designed to make these stout hounds easier for hunters to follow on foot. Although they are enthusiastic hunters in the field, they tend to be calmer and more relaxed at home, sometimes to the point of laziness. Bassets are particularly agreeable animals, both with people and with other dogs, and they make excellent family companions as well as exemplary hunting hounds. They are typically gentle with young children, have a very pleasant disposition, and are comfortable in the role of everyone's best friend and confidant. Basset Hounds aren't right for everyone, however, as they can be stubborn, tend to be highly skilled counter-surfers, and frequently howl when left alone for long periods.

Book excerpt: “Some dogs, like some people, just can’t abide a quiet life,” writes the author of the national bestseller, The Dog Who Came to Stay, in this warm and touching memoir. Penny the basset shows up at the Borlands’ Connecticut farmhouse on a cold, snowy day—head held high, tail wagging, as if she were a long-awaited guest. Hal and Barbara Borland were no strangers to strays. Pat, the rabbit hound thousands of readers came to know in The Dog Who Came to Stay, had also appeared one winter, staying to become the family’s dear companion. Now, Pat is gone, and Hal and Barbara are bereft without canine company. They fall in love with Penny—and she seems to fit right in. Penny is a delightful dog—short-legged, flop-eared, full of fun and curiosity. And she loves people, so much so that she leaves the Borlands to go visiting elsewhere, often settling in with a different family for days on end. Indeed, Hal and Barbara admire her for her spirit of individuality and independence. Though she never truly belonged to them, the Borlands agreed that Penny was a dog well worth loving—and so will readers.

Book excerpt: An accidental dog swap unleashes an unexpected love match in this new romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Julia London. Carly Kennedy's life is in a spiral. She is drowning in work, her divorced parents are going through their midlife crises, and somehow Carly's sister convinces her to foster Baxter--a basset hound rescue with a bad case of the blues. When Carly comes home late from work one day to discover that the dog walker has accidentally switched out Baxter for another perkier, friendlier basset hound, she has reached the end of her leash. When Max Sheffington finds a depressed male basset hound in place of his cheerful Hazel, he is bewildered. But when cute, fiery Carly arrives on his doorstep, he is intrigued. He was expecting the dog walker, not a pretty woman with firm ideas about dog discipline. And Carly was not expecting a handsome, bespectacled man to be feeding her dog mac and cheese. Baxter is besotted with Hazel, and Carly realizes she may have found the key to her puppy’s happiness. For his sake, she starts to spend more time with Hazel and Max, until she begins to understand the appeal of falling for your polar opposite.

Book excerpt: This book (Basset Hounds) provides you with a through description and positive attributes of this breed including origin, purpose, history, normal heights and weights, acceptable colors and behavioral traits. Our books diff er from most books on dog breeds because this book also provides you with a comprehensive and authoritative source of all the known predisposed hereditary health syndromes for the breed. You will find extensive references for each problem described. We also provide the breed club address for this breed and a list of laboratories and organizations that can provide professional help and information. As a small animal veterinarian, I have always been intrigued by the way dogs have been bred to fill a purpose in life and further impressed that they also tend to love performing that service. Greyhounds and other sight hounds are built for speed with aerodynamic bodies consisting of small head, deep chest, narrow waist and large leg muscles. On the other hand Dachshunds take their name from German words meaning badger dog and they use their long nose, long body and short legs to both track, enter and dig into badger dens. After developing a practice that catered to clients with show dogs, my interest in each breed continued to grow as I studied and observed more and more about the unique predisposition and incidence of health problems in each breed. Breeders of purebred dogs for show were a challenge and inspirational for me to research and help them with their unique health problems. Historically references to hereditary problems are scattered throughout various Veterinary medical texts and journals such as ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiovascular and dermatology. This book, as well as the other books and articles I have written, is researched and compiled with the intention to provide both veterinarians and dog owners with comprehensive and authoritative predisposition information under the breed name. At the date of this publication, The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and the The Kennel Club of England reports over 400 known hereditary health syndromes throughout the dog kingdom. At the writing of my fi rst book in 1983, less than 50 hereditary issues are able to be predicted and or diagnosed. Sequencing of the canine genome, DNA tests, metabolic testing including blood tests and urine testing; plus, phenotypic examinations such as radiographs, ultrasound, and CERF or OFA eye registry exams by a Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist have advanced the science of breed related health and behavioral problems. This book will provide veterinarians, researchers, pet owners and breeders with a comprehensive guide to all the known problems veterinarians and dog owners should consider during pet selection and throughout each life stage of our canine friends.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1926 as "Training the Rabbit Hound", this extremely scarce early work on Bassets and Beagles is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished it, using the original text and photographs, as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. The author spent over twenty years breeding and training these small hounds for his own use, and commercially for others. His methods met with much commendation from satisfied hunters nationwide. Although the book is primarily concerned with the popular American sport of rabbit hunting with hounds, much of the content is also applicable to the traditional hunting of the hare. The book consists of one hundred and eighty five pages containing fourteen comprehensive chapters: Selection of the Pup, Early Training, Field Work, Getting Used to the Gun, Later Training, Breeding the Rabbit Hound, Feeding and Caring, Kennel Care and Training, The Basset Hound, Pheasant Hunting with Bassets, The Beagle, Ailments and Remedies etc. The book is well illustrated with a number of vintage photos. Notes on the history and origin of the two breeds will prove of much interest to owners and historians alike. "Ears that sweep away the morning dew, Crooked-kneed and dewlapped like Thessalian Bulls." Shakespeare Many of the earliest dog breed books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.
