Book Synopsis The African Philosophy Reader by : P.H. Coetzee
Download or read book The African Philosophy Reader written by P.H. Coetzee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-03 with total page 813 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divided into eight sections, each with introductory essays, the selections offer rich and detailed insights into a diverse multinational philosophical landscape. Revealed in this pathbreaking work is the way in which traditional philosophical issues related to ethics, metaphysics, and epistemology, for instance, take on specific forms in Africa's postcolonial struggles. Much of its moral, political, and social philosophy is concerned with the turbulent processes of embracing modern identities while protecting ancient cultures.
Book Synopsis A Discourse on African Philosophy by : Christian B. N. Gade
Download or read book A Discourse on African Philosophy written by Christian B. N. Gade and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many have argued that ubuntu was a formative influence on the post-apartheid Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), South Africa’s famous transitional justice mechanism. A Discourse on African Philosophy: A New Perspective on Ubuntu and Transitional Justice in South Africa challenges and contextualizes this view in a way that not only provides new findings and reflections on ubuntu and the TRC, but also contributes to the field of African philosophy. One of Christian B. N. Gade’s key findings, founded on qualitative interviews in South Africa, is that some former TRC commissioners and committee members question the importance of ubuntu in the TRC process. Another is that there are several differing and historically developing interpretations of ubuntu, some of which have evident political implications and reflect non-factual and creative uses of history. Thus ubuntu is not a shared cultural heritage, in the ethnophilosophical sense of a static property characterizing a group. In fact, throughout this book Gade argues that the ethnophilosophical approach to African philosophy as a static group property is highly problematic. Gade’s research presents an alternative collective discourse on African philosophy (“collective” in the sense that it does not focus on any single individual in particular) that takes differences, historical developments, and social contexts seriously. This book will be of interest to scholars in African philosophy, transitional justice, politics and cultural heritage, and law in South Africa.
Book Synopsis African Philosophy, Second Edition by : Paulin J. HOUNTONDJI
Download or read book African Philosophy, Second Edition written by Paulin J. HOUNTONDJI and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1996-11-22 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hountondji contends that ideological manifestations of this view that stress the uniqueness of the African experience are protonationalist reactions against colonialism conducted, paradoxically, in the terms of colonialist discourse. Hountondji argues that a genuine African philosophy must assimilate and transcend the theoretical heritage of Western philosophy and must reflect a rigorous process of independent scientific inquiry.
Book Synopsis Ethnophilosophy and the Search for the Wellspring of African Philosophy by : Ada Agada
Download or read book Ethnophilosophy and the Search for the Wellspring of African Philosophy written by Ada Agada and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-12 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a case for the de-stigmatisation of ethnophilosophy by demonstrating its continuing relevance in contemporary African philosophy. The book brings together established and brilliant young scholars who defend ethnophilosophy as a unique source of African philosophy with the capacity to colour African philosophical scholarship, thereby distinguishing African philosophy from other philosophical traditions of the world and setting the stage for philosophical dialogue in the 21st century characterised by multiculturalism and globalisation. The volume addresses the future of African philosophy by closely linking the past of this tradition with the exciting projects of the contemporary system builders whose works emerge from the ethnophilosophical while transcending it. The book is aimed at African philosophy experts, scholars of intercultural philosophy, African studies scholars and graduate students of African and intercultural philosophy.
Book Synopsis Jazz Transatlantic, Volume II by : Gerhard Kubik
Download or read book Jazz Transatlantic, Volume II written by Gerhard Kubik and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A CHOICE 2018 Outstanding Academic Title In Jazz Transatlantic, Volume II, renowned scholar Gerhard Kubik extends and expands the epic exploration he began in Jazz Transatlantic, Volume I. This second volume amplifies how musicians influenced by swing, bebop, and post-bop in Africa from the end of World War II into the 1970s were interacting with each other and re-creating jazz. Much like the first volume, Kubik examines musicians who adopted a wide variety of jazz genres, from the jive and swing of the 1940s to modern jazz. Drawing on personal encounters with the artists, as well as his extensive field diaries and engagement with colleagues, Kubik looks at the individual histories of musicians and composers within jazz in Africa. He pays tribute to their lives and work in a wider social context. The influences of European music are also included in both volumes as it is the constant mixing of sources and traditions that Kubik seeks to describe. Each of these groundbreaking volumes explores the international cultural exchange that shaped and continues to shape jazz. Together, these volumes culminate an integral recasting of international jazz history.
