Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a long time, Prune the pug is the center of attention in the household. Everyone loves Prune, and life is good for this happy dog. But then baby Basil joins the family. Prune feels a little sad, a little left out, and maybe a little jealous. He has never learned to share. He tries all kinds of things to get people to notice him, but he gets into trouble instead. Basil suggests they become friends, and soon they are sharing everything from snacks to binkies to bath time and more. Through humorous rhymes, Basil & Prune the Pug tells a true story of friendship and sharing. Prompted by the hilarious relationship between her granddaughter Basil and Basil's dog Prune, Vermont artist Kimalie Wassick has written and illustrated a colorful and cheery story about a pug who learns to adjust to life with a new baby in the house.

Book excerpt: What and how we eat are two of the most persistent choices we face in everyday life. Whatever we decide on though, and however mundane our decisions may seem, they will be inscribed with information both about ourselves and about our positions in the world around us. Yet, food has only recently become a significant and coherent area of inquiry for cultural studies and the social sciences. Food and Cultural Studies re-examines the interdisciplinary history of food studies from a cultural studies framework, from the semiotics of Barthes and the anthropology of Levi-Strauss to Elias' historical analysis and Bourdieu's work on the relationship between food, consumption and cultural identity. The authors then go on to explore subjects as diverse as food and nation, the gendering of eating in, the phenomenon of TV chefs, the ethics of vegetarianism and food, risk and moral panics.

Book excerpt: On September 28, 1941, the same day that Robert Popple was born in Penetanguishene, Ontario, Ted Williams ended his baseball season with a .406 batting average, a MLB record that still stands today. Patterned after Mark Twain’s recently published autobiography, this memoir describes Popple’s life growing up in 1950s Huronia and later, making his way in the world. With public confidence in nuclear power declining after the Three Mile Island accident and CANDU reactors supplying the lion’s share of Ontario’s electric power, Popple acted as the Ontario Hydro nuclear spokesman for five years. An exact transcript of his mother’s 53-year Family Log is included, a prized source of detail on early events.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Keble's Parishes: A History of Hursley and Otterbourne Curate's work has been respected and repeated; but he paid little attention to the history of Otter bourne, and a good deal has been since disclosed, rendering that Village interesting. Moreover, the entire careers of John Keble and Sir William Heathcote needed to be recorded in their relations to the parish and county. This has, therefore, here been attempted, together with a record of the building of the three churches erected since 1837, and a history of the changes that have taken place though the writer is aware that there is no incident to tempt the reader - no siege of the one castle, no battle more important than the combat in the hay field between Mr. Coram and the penurious steward, and, till the last generation, no striking character. But the record of a thousand peaceful years is truly a cause of thankfulness, shared as it is by many thousand Villages, and we believe that a little investigation would bring to light, in count less other places, much that is well worth remem brance. For the benefit of those who take an interest in provincial dialect, some specimens are appended, which come from personal knowledge. Book excerpt: This book challenges the accepted view of the early Royal Society of London that holds that its fellows did not seriously attempt to implement Francis Bacon’s program for the methodological reform of the sciences. Instead, the book shows that Bacon’s program shaped the Society’s earliest work in important, if often contradictory, ways as fellows wedded Bacon’s ideas to their various interests and problem areas. Developing Bacon’s program in different directions resulted in a richer understanding of his method than the undirected empiricism often associated with his name. The author demonstrates that Bacon’s call for a focus on “things themselves” was built upon three distinct images of objects of knowledge, in opposition to recent accounts that focus on the collective witnessing of matters of fact. He identifies at the core of Bacon’s method a threefold metaphorical ontology of objects of knowledge and corresponding objectivities. The book reveals a picture of the Royal Society as more sophisticated and unified than previously depicted, while simultaneously demonstrating how the fellows’ development of Bacon’s legacy ultimately pulled in different directions. Specular objects of knowledge privileged passive observation and justified an empiricist objectivity. Manipulated objects of art or manual objects emphasized an engaged, constructivist objectivity in which knowing is doing. And, a vision of underlying forms as generative objects of knowledge, which could be combined like letters of the alphabet to produce phenomena at will, defined a theoretical concept of objectivity. These components of Bacon’s method inform in varying ways the early publications of the Royal Society by John Evelyn, Robert Hooke, John Wilkins, Thomas Sprat, and John Graunt, which are examined in detail to demonstrate the collective negotiation of an ambitious inductive program employing hypotheses, active powers, and the disciplined use of analogy. Examining the Royal Society’s activity in the areas of horticulture, experimentation, language reform, cultural criticism, and political arithmetic, the author synthesizes philosophical and sociological approaches to science in developing a new understanding of the Royal Society and its legacy for science, culture, and politics.
