This book was released on 2021-07-02 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document elaborates the revised International Standard Statistical Classification of Fishing Gear (ISSCFG), as endorsed and adopted for implementation by the FAO Coordinating Working Party on Fishery Statistics (CWP) at its Twenty-fifth Session in February 2016 in Rome, Italy. The classification applies to commercial, subsistence and recreational fisheries in marine and freshwater fisheries. The document provides definitions and illustrations of the configuration and mode of operation of typical fishing gears. The primary purpose is to assist FAO Members, regional fishery bodies, as well as those working on fishery statistics and management, to correctly attribute and report fisheries catches made by different gear types. The document also contributes to the prevention, deterrence and elimination of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing by providing monitoring, control and surveillance personnel with information to identify the type of fishing gear with regard to licence and authorization to carry out fishing operations. Finally, the document also provides context and references for some contemporary conservation issues related to major fishing gear types; it can therefore be used as a reference text for students and researchers in fisheries and marine conservation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A diverse range of fishing gears and methods have been evolved to capture a wide range of species constituting the fisheries in different parts of the world. Significant developments have taken place in the fishing gear materials, design and fabrication and degree of sophistication in the operation and handling of fishing gears, in the last three decades. Advances in vessel technology, precision electronic navigation systems, high definition fish finders and sonar, gear monitoring systems and computerised control systems have increased the precision and efficiency of fishing. These developments while increasing the fish production have also brought to focus emerging issues such as the need for long term sustainability of fishery resources, fishery enhancement, protection of biodiversity, environmental safety and energy conservation in fish harvesting, which are being addressed in different parts of the fishery world with varying degrees of success. This publication brings together latest information in the field of commercial fishing technology and provides an overview of the important fishing gears, their design, fabrication and operation with focus on recent advances in responsible focuses on the requirements of the graduate and post graduate studies of fisheries science and fishing gear technology. Contents Chapter 1: Introduction; Chapter 2: Fishing Gear Materials; Chapter 3: Classification of Fishing Gears; Chapter 4: Basic Principles of Fishing Gear Design and Construction; Chapter 5: Design and Operation of Major Fishing Gears, Trawls, Purse seines, Lines, Gill nets & trammel nets, Traps; Chapter 6: Fish Detection Methods; Chapter 7: Selectivity of Fishing Gears; Chapter 8: Energy Conservation in Fishing; Chapter 9: Responsible Fishing.

Book Synopsis Science, Technology and Development by : Mozammel Huq
Download or read book Science, Technology and Development written by Mozammel Huq and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1991. This volume, containing the proceedings of a Conference organised by the Science, Technology and Development (STD) Forum in association with the Developing Countries Research Unit (DCRU), University of Strathclyde, on 9-10 April 1990, is a modest attempt at advancing awareness concerning Third World development mainly in two inter-related areas: (a) the problems faced in the advancement of science and technology in the Third World and (b) the use of scientific and technological knowledge for promoting sustainable development of these countries. Given the multi-disciplinary character of the Conference and, in particular, the variety of approaches adopted by the contributors, any attempt to synthesise the papers in a brief introduction is likely to be futile. The best that can be done is to introduce some of the papers in a brief review. But before that a few words on the objectives of the Conference, and in particular on the need for North-South Cooperation in science, technology and development, may be helpful.

Download or read book Fisherman's Workbook written by J. Prado and published by Wiley. This book was released on 1991-01-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unusual pocketbook, designed for fishermen, netmakers, boatbuilders and other professionals, provides easy reference on land or sea, to a wealth of useful information. It is presented in five parts. The first helps with the choice and use of materials; the second with the choice of fishing gear; the next outline the characteristics of echo sounders and deck machinery for handling fishing gear. Then comes information on the most effective use of fishing vessels, and guidelines for calculating costs and benefits of fishing operations. Finally basic formulae and tables are given and a section on ordering equipment. Fishing technologies are not dependent on exact science, for individual experience, knowledge and skill are of great importance. This workbook therefore contains sets of guidelines drawn from the wide experience of master fishermen, to be used in combination with the individual's own experiences, knowledge and expertise.

Book excerpt: The fishing technology of the Classical world has so far received little systematic attention, neither from historians nor from archaeologists. In this volume, the reader will find a series of studies offering a wide range of approaches to the topic of ancient fishing technology, based on detailed studies of the available literary, archaeological, pictorial and icthyological evidence as well as on diachronic comparisons with fishing techniques of the Early Medieval and Modern periods. The articles included in the present volume are based on the authors' presentations at an international, interdisciplinary workshop in Cadiz, covering the history of fishing from Pre-history to the present day, with a special emphasis on the Roman period.
