Book Synopsis Languages Within Language by : Ivan Fónagy
Download or read book Languages Within Language written by Ivan Fónagy and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-12-31 with total page 843 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is little hope of reconstructing by means of comparative or typological studies a lingua adamica essentially different from present-day languages. The distant preverbal past is however still present in live speech. Phonetic, syntactic and semantic rule transgressions, far from being products of a deficient output, are governed by a universal iconic apparatus, a sort of ‘anti-grammar’ or ‘proto-grammar’ which enables the speaker and the poet to express preconscious and subconscious mental contents that could not be conveyed by means of the grammar of any language. Secondary messages, generated by the proto-grammar are integrated into the primary grammatical message. The two messages whose structural and semantic divergence represents a chronological distance of hundreds of thousands of years, constitute a dialectic unity which characterize natural languages. The evolutive approach offers a different, perhaps better understanding of questions related to dynamic synchrony, vocal and verbal style, poetic language, language change.Chapters on: Diversity of the lexicon; Dual encoding: vocal style; Syntactic gesturing; Syntactic regressions; Prosodic expression of emotions; Poetry and vocal art; Situation and meaning; A hidden presence: verbal magic; Playing with language: joke and metaphor; Metaphor: a research instrument; Dynamics of poetic language; Semantic structure of possessive constructions; Semantic structure of punctuation marks; Why gestures?; Between acts and words; Language within language: dynamics, change and evolution.

Book Synopsis Avant Garde Theatre by : Christopher Innes
Download or read book Avant Garde Theatre written by Christopher Innes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the development of avant garde theatre from its inception in the 1890s right up to the present day, Christopher Innes exposes a central paradox of modern theatre; that the motivating force of theatrical experimentation is primitivism. What links the work of Strindberg, Artaud, Brook and Mnouchkine is an idealisation of the elemental and a desire to find ritual in archaic traditions. This widespread primitivism is the key to understanding both the political and aesthetic aspects of modern theatre and provides fresh insights into contemporary social trends. The original text, first published in 1981 as Holy Theatre, has been fully revised and up-dated to take account of the most recent theoretical developments in anthropology, critical theory and psychotherapy. New sections on Heiner Muller, Robert Wilson, Eugenio Barba, Ariane Mnouchkine and Sam Shepard have been added. As a result, the book now deals with all the major avant garde theatre practitioners, in Europe and North America. Avant Garde Theatre will be essential reading for anyone attempting to understand contemporary drama.
Book Synopsis Ruin, Ritual and Remembrance in Twentieth Century Irish Drama by : Ronald Gene Rollins
Download or read book Ruin, Ritual and Remembrance in Twentieth Century Irish Drama written by Ronald Gene Rollins and published by Academica Press,LLC. This book was released on 2001 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph explores the development of Irish drama in the 20th century and discusses recent cultural critiques of the entire enterprise of the Irish theatre. Rollins interprets Yeats, Synge, Beckett, Friel and McGuiness among others as practitioners in a kind of national reformulation of ritual and memory. This is one of the most thorough one volume discussions of the greatest century of Irish dramatic creativity and influence. "...I am impressed with the critical writing in Ronald Rollins's RUIN, RITUAL AND REMBRANCE. His scholarship focuses on Ireland's intricate history and Yeat's definition of maimed Irish space " great hatred, little room." Rollins deals with three playwrights, Sean O'Casey, Denis Johnston and the contemporary Frank McGuiness and their response to the nationalist uprising of 1916. Rollins points up after artful consideration of the older dramatists, the special relevance of McGuiness' idea that the Ulster rebels of pre World War 1 are the same as the Dublin rebels of 1916, the flip side of the coin. These writer see each denomination in Ireland as ordinary, half inspired, half bigoted human beings curiously united in their defiant rhetoric. The central thrust of the study is a consideration of the nationalist poet/playwright and leader Patrick Pearse as a man lost in the labyrinth of revolutionary rhetoric; in Rollins approach to McGuiness' THE SONS OF ULSTER MARCHING TOWARDS THE SOMME, Rollins argues the proposition that the character Piper is a counter figure to Pearse, similarly involved in the ritual chants of war, youth and death. The difference is that the real life Pearse shot by the British survives as an icon of Irish republicanism while the fictional Piper lives to see the Protestant house of Ulster crumble. Rollin's work is full of insights like this. Buy the book." ---James Liddy " ...highly recommended." Professor Robert Mahony-Catholic University of America
Book Synopsis Marian Moments in Early Modern British Drama by : Lisa Hopkins
Download or read book Marian Moments in Early Modern British Drama written by Lisa Hopkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerning itself with the complex interplay between iconoclasm against images of the Virgin Mary in post-Reformation England and stage representations that evoke various 'Marian moments' from the medieval, Catholic past, this collection answers the call for further investigation of the complex relationship between the fraught religio-political culture of the early modern period and the theater that it spawned. Joining historians in rejecting the received belief that Catholicism could be turned on and off like a water spigot in response to sixteenth-century religious reform, the early modern British theater scholars in this collection turn their attention to the vestiges of Catholic tradition and culture that leak out in stage imagery, plot devices, and characterization in ways that are not always clearly engaged in the business of Protestant panegyric or polemic. Among the questions they address are: What is the cultural function of dramatic Marian moments? Are Marian moments nostalgic for, or critical of, the 'Old Faith'? How do Marian moments negotiate the cultural trauma of iconoclasm and/or the Reformation in early modern England? Did these stage pictures of Mary provide subversive touchstones for the Old Faith of particular import to crypto-Catholic or recusant members of the audience?
Book Synopsis Anglo-Irish Literature by : William T. O'Malley
Download or read book Anglo-Irish Literature written by William T. O'Malley and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1990-03-26 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography brings together information on over 4,000 dissertations that deal wholly or in part with Irish writers and Anglo-Irish literature. Included are works from more than 350 universities and from 28 different countries, a scope of material that has not been collected in one place before. The dissertation subjects include not only poets, novelists, and dramatists, but also critics, diarists, scholars, historians, and journalists. In all, 193 authors are studied, whose lives cover the years from 1600 to the present. The book, which supersedes all previously published volumes on this subject, lists each entry under the author as subject, rather than under a topical, genre, or subject designation. Because multiple-subject entries are listed under first mentioned author, a complete see-also reference section has been included to direct users to all entries related to each author. The volume also includes a section on general and topical studies, as well as a subject index. This book will be an important reference for courses in English literature, Irish studies, and theater and drama, and an important addition to most university and college libraries.

Book Synopsis Lonergan and the Theology of the Future by : David M. Hammond
Download or read book Lonergan and the Theology of the Future written by David M. Hammond and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today a variety of theological approaches offer fresh and enriching insights, yet much of contemporary religious thought can be disorienting for the beginning student of theology. This accessible introduction presents aspects of the thought of Fr. Bernard Lonergan SJ, (1904-1984) in a way that makes his vital contribution to contemporary theology accessible to the beginning student. The author minimizes technical terms and explains basic ideas with user-friendly examples. Rather than a survey of diverse contemporary theological opinions, or a thematic presentation of one topic, the book tries to clear away confusions by focusing on the theologian concerned with those topics. The book will thus encourage creative ways of overcoming some of the unnecessary obstacles for students who want to explore theology today.
