It traces the gradual accretion over 300 years of the habits, institutions, laws, resentments, ambitions, acquiescences and evasions that led to the modern form of apartheid. Drawing on interviews both with the makers of apartheid policy and with its victims, this essential book describes the gradual growth of violent resistance and the increasing repressiveness of relocating Africans to the so called tribal homelands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The all-important problem in South Africa today is the future co-existence of Whites and Non-Whites. For a hundred years the basic issue appeared to be that of race - the rivalry between Dutch and English. Now it is seen to be that of colour - the growing conflict between Europeans and Non-Europeans. In other parts of the world the question of discrimination on the ground of the colour of the skin is being gradually, and in the main peacefully, resolved. Everywhere the Non-Whites insist that what they call 'colonialism' or 'imperialism' can no longer be tolerated. They hold that every race is entitled to govern the land in which it lives, or at least to share in its administration. The Republic of South Africa refuses to fall into line. Its White rulers are not prepared to share authority with Non-Whites. They insist upon the political, social, industrial and residential separation of Europeans and Non-Europeans.

Book excerpt: South Africa may be situated in an outlying corner of the world but it has been an important factor in world politics for more than three centuries. The antecedents of the Republic of South Africa go back to the planting of a colony by the Dutch East India Company on Table Bay at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652. Long before the establishment of Cape Town, Dutch and English ships had stopped with increasing regularity at the Cape to break the long voyage to and from the East and to take on a supply of fresh water.

Book excerpt: The book examines the major issues in South Africa's history, from the colonial conquest of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, through the establishment of racism, segregation and apartheid, to the spirit of reform, resistance and repression of the 1980s and, now, in this new edition, the first democratic elections in April 1994. With the break up of institutional apartheid, perspectives on recent South African history have undergone a significant shift. Nigel Worden examines these changes and assesses developments within the new South Africa in a wide historical context, providing a sharp, analytical overview for all those interested in modern South African history and politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democracy came to South Africa in April 1994, when the African National Congress won a landslide victory in the first free national election in the country’s history. That definitive and peaceful transition from apartheid is often cited as a model for others to follow. The new order has since survived several transitions of ANC leadership, and it averted a potentially destabilizing constitutional crisis in 2008. Yet enormous challenges remain. Poverty and inequality are among the highest in the world. Staggering unemployment has fueled xenophobia, resulting in deadly aggression directed at refugees and migrant workers from Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Violent crime rates, particularly murder and rape, remain grotesquely high. The HIV/AIDS pandemic was shockingly mishandled at the highest levels of government, and infection rates continue to be overwhelming. Despite the country’s uplifting success of hosting Africa’s first World Cup in 2010, inefficiency and corruption remain rife, infrastructure and basic services are often semifunctional, and political opposition and a free media are under pressure. In this volume, major scholars chronicle South Africa’s achievements and challenges since the transition. The contributions, all previously unpublished, represent the state of the art in the study of South African politics, economics, law, and social policy.
