Book Synopsis Soft Soil Engineering by : Dave H. Chan
Download or read book Soft Soil Engineering written by Dave H. Chan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-09-28 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soft soils present particular challenges to engineers and an understanding of the specific characteristics of these soils is indispensable. Laboratory techniques such as numerical modelling, theoretical analysis and constitutive modelling give new insights into soft soil material behaviour, while large-scale testing in the field provides important information in areas such as slope stability and soft soil improvements. This collection of papers from the Fourth International Conference on Soft Soil Engineering, Vancouver, 2006, presents an international appraisal of current research and new advances in engineering practices, illustrating the theory with relevant case studies. Geotechnical professionals, engineers, academics and researchers working in the areas of soft ground engineering and soft soil engineering will find this a valuable book.
Book Synopsis Embankments on Organic Soils by : J. Hartlén
Download or read book Embankments on Organic Soils written by J. Hartlén and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-11-08 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More and more civil engineering constructions are being built on soft soils. As areas with better foundations are used up the necessity to be able to build structures on soft soils increases. The most troublesome of soft soils are organic soils due mainly to their high compressibility (much higher than in mineral soils), and also their very low shear strength. The large diversity of organic soils with respect to their origin as well as their properties make classification, testing, and engineering prediction of behaviour, very difficult. For this reason, engineers try, in general, to avoid constructing on deep layers of organic soils. If forced, by necessity, to do so, they manage with light structures e.g. embankments or low buildings. The authors of this book have been involved in a joint research project on the testing of embankments on organic soils. This was carried out in the North-Western part of Poland by the Swedish Geotechnical Institute and the Department of Geotechnics of Warsaw Agricultural University. The results of their research is presented in this new book and provides a valuable insight into this growing area in the field of engineering geology.

This extensive body of collated knowledge is integrated by three overview papers covering engineering geology, mechanical behaviour and engineering implications. Topics: Overview papers; Marine clays; Eastuarine Clays; Lacustrine clays; Stiff clays; Sands and other cohesionless soils; Residual and other tropical Soils; Weak rock.
Book Synopsis Modern Approaches to Plasticity by : D. Kolymbas
Download or read book Modern Approaches to Plasticity written by D. Kolymbas and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 797 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constitutive modelling of granulate materials has achieved significant progress in recent times although some challenging problems still remain to be solved. Many of the 35 contributions in this volume are devoted to modelling but there are also papers investigating the phenomena to be modelled. For instance, there are reviews on several aspects of the behaviour of granulates which are mere material properties while other aspects are related to the ill-posedness of the corresponding boundary value problems. The work provides a comprehensive and up to date treatise on the theory of plasticity in granular materials, together with a great number of solution methods and applications. The volume is intended for researchers and practising engineers who wish to enhance their knowledge in this rapidly expanding field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of time on the strength and deformation characteristics of various materials can assume importance in a variety of engineering problems. The time dependent mechanical behavior of soil is highly complex and can impact a broad range of applications such as in situ testing, seismic response, landslides, and embankment performance. This volume provides an update on the state of research and practice in the area of soil time effects. Emphasis is placed on laboratory and field developments, modeling time dependent behavior, rate dependence in a variety of soils, from subtropical soils to subglacial till, and on new applications such as soils reinforced with geosynthetics and inclusion dowels. Models are provided that include the influence of soil structure.
Book Synopsis Mechanisms of Deformation and Fracture by : K. E. Easterling
Download or read book Mechanisms of Deformation and Fracture written by K. E. Easterling and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanisms of Deformation and Fracture contains the proceedings of the Interdisciplinary Conference on the Mechanisms of Deformation and Fracture held at the University of Luleå in Sweden on September 20-22, 1978. The papers explore the mechanisms underlying deformation and fracture of materials such as pearlite, metals, quartz, soils, and rocks. Results of theoretical and experimental studies on topics ranging from electromagnetic detection of low-cycle fatigue to stress and strain distribution in two-phase systems are presented. This book is comprised of 37 chapters and begins with a discussion on the interrelationships among solid mechanics, earth sciences, and material sciences. Subsequent chapters focus on the low-cycle behavior of case hardened steel; deformation and shear of normally consolidated flocculated kaolin; analytical modeling in inelasticity; creep mechanisms in clay; and initiation of crack growth at full plasticity. Plastic flow mechanisms and the rheological properties of the Earth's mantle are also examined, along with the fracture of glassy thermoplastics. The final chapter presents a thermodynamic model of consolidation in cohesive soils. This monograph will be a valuable resource for students and practitioners of mechanical engineering, metallurgy, materials science, and earth sciences.
