Book excerpt: A moving and inspirational memoir from the beloved maverick carpenter on HGTV’s smash hit Fixer Upper that shows how to turn your hobbies and craft into a career and celebrates the power of meaningful work. Now known to the countless fans of Fixer Upper as Chip and Joanna Gaines’s go-to table maker and acclaimed artisan, Clint Harp hasn’t always lived the DIY dream we see on the show. Ten years ago, he was dutifully working at a sales job that, while it provided security for his family, did nothing to help him achieve his unfulfilled dreams of building furniture. With the support of his wife, the encouragement of a mentor, and a life full of lessons, he finally took the leap, quitting his job and setting out on the quest to become a carpenter. Without formal training, financing, workspace, or customers, the Harps were quickly on the edge of financial collapse. Then Clint met Chip Gaines at a gas station—a chance encounter that marked the next chapter on a wild ride Clint could never have imagined possible. Spanning Clint’s remarkable journey—from a childhood learning carpentry and hard work at his grandfather’s knee, through his struggles to balance pursuing his dreams with supporting his family, to his partnership with Chip and Joanna Gaines and the many adventures and misadventures of filming Fixer Upper—Handcrafted is part memoir and part manual for dreamers of all backgrounds. “From the floor of his first shop to the foundations of Habitat for Humanity houses, to building furniture for the world to see, Clint Harp is living a handcrafted life” (President Jimmy Carter).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Detroit Tigers, an umpire, a pitcher, and a mistake—one of the “classic, human, baseball stories” (Ken Burns, creator of the PBS mini-series Baseball). The perfect game is one of the rarest accomplishments in sports. In nearly four hundred thousand contests in over 130 years, it has happened only twenty times. On June 2, 2010, Armando Galarraga threw baseball’s twenty-first. Except that’s not how it entered the record books. That’s because Jim Joyce, voted the best umpire in the game in 2010 and 2011, missed the call on the final out. But rather than throwing a tantrum, Galarraga simply turned and smiled, went back to the mound, and finished the game. “Nobody’s perfect,” he said later in the locker room. “You might think everything that could have been said, replayed, and revealed about that night has already been uttered, logged, and exposed. You would, however, be as wrong as the unfortunate Mr. Joyce” (The Detroit News). In Nobody’s Perfect, Galarraga and Joyce come together to tell the personal story of a remarkable game that will live forever in baseball lore, and to trace their fascinating lives in sports. The result is “a masterpiece”, an absorbing insider’s look at two careers in baseball, a tremendous achievement, and an enduring moment of pure grace and sportsmanship (The Huffington Post).

Book excerpt: AND THATS THAT! is the life story of one of golfs greatest champions. Louise Suggs shares a rich and colorful insight into the courage it took for her and a small group of women in the post WWII years to step out and build a womens professional sports organization - the Ladies Professional Golf Association. One of the LPGAs 13 Founders and one of the original Hall of Fame members, Louise Suggs began to make her name in golf with a dazzling amateur career, a dominant eight-year stretch during which she won every crown of significance in the womens game - many of them on multiple occasions. Louise went on to win 60 professional titles, a number bettered by only three other women in the 63-year history of the LPGA. She also triumphed in 11 major championships - an achievement bested by only two other women. A Few Words About Louise Suggs Louise deserves great credit for the work she did in making the LPGA a reality. She was a delight to play with. Her swing was a magnificent combination of fluid rhythm, balance and grace. She was an unselfish mentor to me, and Im honored to call her friend. - Mickey Wright, World Golf Hall of Fame Member Louise is an inspiration and a role model for all women and girls to dream big and commit to making it happen - even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges. Her remarkable life story is humble, heroic, and humorous, and demonstrates how much is possible when you are true to yourself and never lose sight of always doing the right thing. - Cindy Davis, President Nike Golf - Vice President Nike, Inc. What is most impressive about Louise is her absolute humility in the face of such extraordinary accomplishments. What she has done throughout her life and career warrant a Paul Bunyan-sized ego, yet Louise exhibits nothing less than grace, dignity and an authentic spirit. While the LPGA is lucky to have Louise as a hero, I believe no one is more fortunate than the person who can call Louise a friend.- Ty Votaw, Executive Vice President - Chief Global Communications Officer PGA Tour The LPGA wouldnt be even close to what it is today if it hadnt been for Louise and some of the other players of her era. Louise has always been a woman of integrity and conviction. This guided her through her life and that is what I have always loved about her. - Beth Daniel, World Golf Hall of Fame Member, 2009 U.S. Solheim Cup Captain The goal for a life well lived should be the ability to leave your mark - on the people you met, the places you visited, and in the career you pursued. Suffice it to say that no one has left a more permanent mark than Louise Suggs. Because of the courage, vision, and perseverance of Louise and her fellow LPGA Founders, women all over the world can pursue their dreams in this wonderful game. - Mike Whan, LPGA Commissioner

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Synopsis A Small Part of Me This book is composed of two different parts, which stems from my life experiences. Part one is titled Mixed Emotions and part two is Lifes Daily Trials. I use the name Jehovah because Margaret M. Johnson, my beautiful grandmother, spoke of Jehovah every day. Many cultures pray to different names in reference to God. This is the name I heard growing up with a grandmother who singly cared for as many as fourteen children in one household. My wonderful mother, Barbara W. Marsh, taught me its not how well-known you are, its what you do to become well-known. In order to get a friend, you first need to be one. Not all friends turn out to be as true friends as you are to them, but you learn as you go. Part one is about feelings of the mind, heart, and soul. As we become older, we, in turn, should become wiser. It doesnt happen with everyone because we all sometimes follow when we should lead. In following, I have suffered more than some and less than others, but only Jehovah knows how much either way. Part two is a compilation of short narratives. The intentions are to strengthen whoever is feeling down about something in their life mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally. In time, promoting hope and shedding light on a negative lifestyle. Some of these narratives have changed things in my life that very few people know of today. I hope those that read this book will see that you dont need to go down the wrong path in order to do right. I hope and pray that this book will help you see some things within yourself that could be changed for the better. Each of us have some things that we have been through in life, but the name of the game is survival and education. Jehovah teaches us many things in everyday living, mostly through blessings. Temptation is always going to be there, but its up to each one of us to survive them. We can share our pain with others and hope that they can make a negative decision into a positive one. This book is based on my feelings, my emotions. Always trust and have faith in Jehovah not man, whom sometimes try to entice you into doing what you would consider as wrong. Its not worth the heartache and trouble, which you can never take back. Relationships, living, dating, and marriagetheyre not for everyone because not everybody is looking for the same things out of a commitment to one another. Know what you want before you act and how to go about getting it. It involves two souls with the same outlook on life to make things work, its never one-sided. Always be definite about what you want out of life and make it a goal, not a job, to get it. I hope this will educate and inspire others to speak their truths, reach for their goals, and never settle for less than the best. One should live life to the fullest, just as I have been inspired to do just that. Thank you and God bless. Robert Eugene Wilson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written largely for the benefit of the writers children and grandchildren so they would know something of the life and hardships faced by their pioneering ancestors. It was inspired by their questions about our childhood and youth and their own memories of many visits to the Kansas farms of their grandparents and great grandparents. However, we think many other readers will enjoy learning something about what it was like growing up on a midwestern farm in the 1940s and 50s. A time that was in many ways much simpler but certainly not easy. We had the privilege of knowing personally grandparents and great grandparents who had lived through the many profound changes that occurred around the change of the century. Automobiles, tractors and telephones had only arrived on the farm about 30 years earlier and the grandparents’ barns and garages were still filled with horse-drawn equipment and harnesses from an earlier era. Electricity and graveled roads only occurred after WWII in our memory and running water and indoor bathrooms were still not common on many farms as late as 1955. It was a different and changing world of which we were privileged to be a part. Almost all our relatives lived nearby, and neighbors all knew us and didn’t hesitate to let our parents know if we were up to any mischief. We were expected to take responsibility, work hard, always be truthful, stay out of trouble, study hard and plant straight rows. All are excellent traits that unfortunately are not as valued today as they were then. In the book we have shared some history of the area and some stories of incidents from our lives that were not uncommon among farm families. We hope readers enjoy learning about us and our families.

Book excerpt: A rare glimpse of professional ballplayers, not as pitchers, hitters, managers, and coaches, but as dads and grandads. Sons of major league baseball players grow up in a unique environment, not only because they are raised in part by professional athletes, but also because they are raised by the game itself. They come of age immersed in the distinct sounds and aromas of baseball. The locker rooms, the cinderblock-lined corridors beneath the stands, the dugouts, and the fields are the playgrounds of their youth. In Sons of Baseball, Mark Braff interviews 18 men who share their exclusive stories, ballpark memories, and the challenges and rewards of having fathers whose talents enabled them to reach the pinnacle of their profession. Each chapter is devoted to one son talking about his experiences, from the poignancy of one son’s disclosure that his dad has not been able to acknowledge his son’s sexuality as a gay man, to the humor of another son absconding with the groundskeepers’ cart in Cleveland. With a foreword by Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. and interviews with the sons of beloved players such as Yogi Berra, Mariano Rivera, Roger Maris, Gil Hodges, and Larry Doby, Sons of Baseball provides a unique, well-rounded perspective on the lives of professional ballplayers and their families.
