The researcher investigated the perceived barriers experienced by female African-American principals and assistant principals working in suburban districts as well as the factors, which allowed them to overcome these obstacles and remain in their positions. Seven women currently working in suburban school districts within and around the Delaware Valley section of Pennsylvania voluntarily agreed to complete all components of the research which included an online survey, open-ended questions, and participation in an interview. The results of this study indicated various barriers encountered by the participants in their current and former positions as well as in their adolescent years as students. Despite facing obstacles, these leaders were able to intentionally and unintentionally employ strategies to overcome obstacles and maintain their roles in a predominantly white school setting. The overall findings of this study will contribute significantly to research about female African-American leaders in public schools, assist with understanding the importance of creating a diverse staff in suburban school districts, and serve as a professional resource for future women of color seeking school leadership positions.

The participants were required to have at least 5 years of experience in education and at least 3 years as an elementary school principal. Interviews were conducted by the researcher to acquire explanations about the participants’ perceptions, perspectives, and feelings based on their experiences as exemplary elementary principals. The investigation focused on the females’ career paths, job responsibilities, barriers/challenges, and affirmations as exemplary leaders. Further, the females provided advice and guidance for aspiring female leaders in education. In general, the exemplary female principals started their careers as teachers, married, had children, and obtained advanced degrees and training in educational leadership as they moved to positions as elementary principals. The job responsibilities of the female principals included supervising instruction to improve instructional practices as the instructional leader, monitoring data, implementing policies and procedures, hiring as well as placing personnel, preparing budgets, maintaining a safe environment for students and staff, managing facilities, and purchasing equipment/resources for the organization. The major barriers/challenges faced by the female principals were lacking resources, managing time, prioritizing tasks, and managing tasks for work and home. Advice and guidance for aspiring female administrators centered around the personal, professional, and public service responsibilities that contributed to their success and recognition as exemplary principal.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Over the past decade, research has been devoted to bridging the gap in academics and opportunity among African-American males. Missing from the dialogue however, are the voices of African-American female leaders. This voice will not only play an instrumental part in mediating cultural misunderstandings that occur in the classroom, but it will also facilitate a much needed conversation in understanding gender and race by displaying different views on educational leadership. Thus, the purpose of this study is to explore the perceptions of the opportunity gap among African-American female principals in Title I schools to raise the presence of their voice in this educational discussion. As the opportunity gap is an issue that has a global impact, this research can be transferred to various contexts in the educational setting. The findings that emerged from this study can assist both rural and Title I school districts in reevaluating existing educational programs or aid in designing new initiatives to improve outcomes for low performing African-American males. Moreover, this data can support school districts in developing the cultural competence of teachers and staff through professional development and culturally sensitive pedagogy. This study included an elementary, middle, and high school principal. Using a phenomenological approach, the participants were encouraged to discuss factors influencing their leadership practices, internal and external barriers and actions taken to overcome those barriers, and measures to enhance staff effectiveness through professional development. After two interview cycles, the researcher analyzed participants’ responses through the lens of Critical Race Theory and existing literature resulting in four emergent themes. One theme was related to perceived barriers. The next theme was tied to a particular leadership style. The final two themes were linked to the participant’s race and gender. Though presented in earlier literature as symbols of oppression and inequality, for the participants in this study, race and gender served as vehicles to address the opportunity gap in meaningful ways for African-American males in their Title I schools.
