Book excerpt: This study examined the contextual factors that led to the success of Mexican Americans who overcame extraordinary obstacles in obtaining post-secondary educations. Mexican Americans continue to experience great challenges to post secondarysuccess. An in-depth case study was performed on ten subjects who managed to not only survive, but also do well in school and life. The purpose of the study was to identify obstacles these men and women had to overcome, the means they used to overcome them, and the salience of their ethnicity to their experience. Utilizing a worldview construct and the concept of familism, findings are presented that demonstrate how these men and women were able to succeed educationally. First, their families placed a high value for and exposure to literacy, English and Spanish, in the participants' homes. Contrary to the fact that these participants' homes were characterized by low levels of parental education, they were exposed to high levels of literacy. A second important commonality among these high achievers was that all of them at some point in their schooling attended desegregated schools where they were exposed to Anglo peers with much greater social capital than themselves. Finally, and perhaps the most important, is the profound value for hardwork that characterized almost all of these households and was channeled into dedication to studies and a strong belief that effort, perseverance, and courage were important in achieving academic goals. Rather than just focusing on the barriers, the problems common to low-income, first-generation college students as do most studies on student access and success, this study focuses on the creative solutions its subjects found and the kinds of support that made differences for them. The study records the perceptions of the successful graduates of the causes of their school success and tapped into their insights. The findings and recommendations of the study may enable educators to re-examine their own attitudes toward the schooling of Mexican origin students and its unanticipated negative consequences and help institutions of higher education identify policy changes that will facilitate the recruitment and retention of Hispanic and other minority students.

Book excerpt: The study's purpose was to identify the existence of upward mobility patterns of Mexican American upper-level academic administrators and to discover factors related to their upward mobility. Objectives were to determine the presence of upward mobility patterns, identify factors related to upward mobility processes, determine administrators' perceptions regarding factors leading to upward mobility, and determine if discrepancies existed between actual progression and perceived requirements for upward mobility. Data were obtained from questionnaires sent to 40 individuals identified by their institutions as Mexican American upper-level administrators. Responses were coded for SAS System computer analysis yielding frequency distributions and other descriptive statistics. Cohen and March's (1974) normative career ladder and Salimbene's (1982) variations to this norm were selected as the models against which the career data would be compared. Respondents were grouped by type of institution, current position, type of career path, and movement into and out of higher education. A profile was developed giving several types of information. Profile components were salary, tenure, rank, work schedule, preparation and education, mentors, membership in organizations, gender, age, height, weight, eye color, hair color, skin hue, voice timbre, religion, political affiliation, ethnic label, "home"/birth states and cities, "brand-new" positions, and job-change plans. The results of the research indicated that 93% of the respondents did not follow the normative career ladder and that their variations were similar to those in Salimbene's model. For all respondents, 55% had been a faculty member, 15% had been a department head, 45% had been a director, and 70% had been a dean. It was found that three variables (hometown, color of skin, and field of study) were related to a higher job level and that, in general, the majority of the factors perceived as necessary for upward progression were possessed by most of the respondents. Conclusions were drawn from the findings of the study, and recommendations for further study were made

Book excerpt: College choice is often described as a three-stage developmental process where students progress through the following phases: predisposition, search and choice (Cabrera & La Nasa, 2000; Hossler & Gallagher, 1987). Existing research, however, suggests this model does not account for all aspects of Latina/os' college choice experience (Hurtado, Kurotsuchi, Briggs, & Rhee, 1996; Perna, 2000), warranting further investigation. As such, in-depth phenomenological interviews (Seidman, 2006) were conducted with 20 Mexican American high school seniors from the South Texas Border, an area with postsecondary attainment rates below the state and national average (U.S. Census Bureau, 2008f), to gain a deeper understanding of their college choice experience. Guided by an integrated social capital and Chicana feminist conceptual framework, this study sought to uncover how the intersectionality of students' social identities shaped their college choice process. Specifically, this study explored how students' identities influenced their college aspirations and their access to college information, support and assistance via their social networks. Findings revealed that students negotiated among several social identities (generational college status, sibling identity, academic identity, class identity, racial/ethnic identity, co-curricular identity, regional identity) which influenced the development of their college aspirations and their ability to access college knowledge and support from their social networks in both positive and negative ways within the four main spaces (cultural/familial space, community space, school space, and cyberspace) they occupied on a daily basis. Students' narratives further indicated that the individuals or entities in their social networks that were influential and/or considered sources of college knowledge and support included immediate and extended family members, various community members such as neighbors or members of students' religious congregations, school personnel (counselors, teachers, co-curricular sponsors), higher education representatives and institutions, peers, and various college oriented websites found on the Internet. Students also noted, however, various challenges in navigating their college choice process that centered around: 1) parents' limited college knowledge, 2) attending a local/regional institution or one outside the region, 3) combating negative educational stereotypes of Mexican Americans in general and those in the South Texas Border in particular, and 4) accessing adequate college information and assistance at school.
