But when Azuba becomes embroiled in a scandal, Nathaniel must bring his young family abroad to save his reputation. Azuba gets her wish, but at what price? Alone in a male world, and juggling the splendor of foreign ports with the terror of the open seas, Azuba must fight to keep her family together. Book Synopsis Chatham Sea Captains in the Age of Sail by : Joseph A. Nickerson Jr.
Download or read book Chatham Sea Captains in the Age of Sail written by Joseph A. Nickerson Jr. and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008-03-14 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chatham Sea Captains in the Age of Sail chronicles the lives and adventures of twenty-five men who traveled the seas from the eighteenth through the twentieth century. These were extraordinary menmasters of navigation who charted paths from the Cape to the Far East with their regal clipper ships; deep-sea fishermen whose fearless spirit drove them to the Grand Banks and Newfoundland in the quest for their catch; and coastal captains who skirted Americas eastern seaboard in pursuit of trade. Spurred on by the Industrial Revolutions demands, these mariners continued their pelagic exploration while pirates, privateers and Confederate raiders tested their mettle. The sea was both foe and ally. To meet the foe was the challenge; to sail her waters and return home as true masters was the force that drove these men to excellence.

Book Synopsis Barnstable by : Stephen Robert Lovell Farrar
Download or read book Barnstable written by Stephen Robert Lovell Farrar and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1639, Barnstable was established by the Plymouth Plantation Colony as the third town on Cape Cod. Over time, Barnstable was divided into six distinct villages: Centerville, Cotuit, Hyannis, Marstons Mills, Osterville, and West Barnstable. Each of these communities grew and developed their own libraries, schools, churches, and general stores. Local industry was abundant, and residents were employed as blacksmiths, cobblers, copper smiths, and farmers. Saltworks, cranberry bogs, shipbuilding, and light industry also supported the area. Barnstable documents the evolution of the town between the 1839 centennial celebration and the 1939 tercentenary and shows how the advent of both the railroad and steam-powered ships spurred great change in the town's communities. Today, economic life revolves around Hyannis while the other villages have become more residential in nature.

Book Synopsis Hyannis and Hyannis Port by : Jennifer Longley
Download or read book Hyannis and Hyannis Port written by Jennifer Longley and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the days of sail, Hyannis has been the hub of Cape Cod. In the nineteenth century, the village, located along Nantucket Sound, was also one of the most important ports between Boston and New York. Hyannis was home to scores of sea captains, and the economy was tied to the sea. By the 1870s, the heyday of sail was waning, but the attraction to the sea had spawned a new and lasting industry. The discovery of Hyannis as a vacation destination began a parade of summer visitors that has been the lifeblood of the local economy ever since. In 1960, the village was catapulted onto the world stage when one of its summer residents, John F. Kennedy, was elected president. Hyannis and Hyannis Port offers a snapshot of the village's rich and colorful history from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s. The book takes readers back in time to meet some of the village's prominent residents and see historic homes. It shows fascinating vintage images of some of the early industries in the village, such as the manufacture of candles and artificial pearls. Hyannis and Hyannis Port gives readers a glimpse into the Kennedy family's life on Cape Cod and allows readers to see the sheer beauty of Hyannis Harbor.
