Book excerpt: Barnett's Manual has become the industry standard, demystifying every aspect of bicycle repair by emphasizing detail, logic, and measurement. The manual, published in four volumes and printed on perforated, grease-resistant paper, can be used by both bike mechanics and the serious DIY-er. Each chapter is structured logically for maximum use: terminology, reasons for service, prerequisites, tool choices, anticipation of complications, fits and dimensions, service procedures, and troubleshooting. Extensive reference information minimizes the need to cross-reference to other sources when solving a repair problem, and the drawings on nearly every page help explain each procedure. This new, updated edition of the bible of bicycle repair also includes more than 1,000 clear and detailed drawings illustrating each procedure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathew James Barnett explained that his book is a light year away from when he first started using weights to increase his size and strength. He said there is twenty years of working out between his first workout and this book. He has a stack of books and magazines that all promised they had something to offer. He recalls following all the systems with none really standing out from the rest. Trial and error in the gym, lead him to the methods in his book. He stated that he knew he was onto something when he heard people asking those people around him, if he was using steroids. Eventually people also began to ask him directly. He stated that there were people in the gyms he used, who were using steroids. To his surprise, Mat recalled that people were starting to copy his methods, including the steroid users. He explained that people in the gym saw his results and saw that he did some things differently to what everyone was doing. Also, that it was easy for them to copy him. Mat explained the name of the book is from true events, but he agreed its an odd name for a bodybuilding book. Mat stated that when people know his story, theyll agree theres only one name for his book. Mat said there isnt a person in the gym, anywhere in the world, that wouldnt benefit from following his humble little book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thousands of years, the faithful have honed proselytizing strategies and talked people into believing the truth of one holy book or another. Indeed, the faithful often view converting others as an obligation of their faith—and are trained from an early age to spread their unique brand of religion. The result is a world broken in large part by unquestioned faith. As an urgently needed counter to this tried-and-true tradition of religious evangelism, A Manual for Creating Atheists offers the first-ever guide not for talking people into faith—but for talking them out of it. Peter Boghossian draws on the tools he has developed and used for more than 20 years as a philosopher and educator to teach how to engage the faithful in conversations that will help them value reason and rationality, cast doubt on their religious beliefs, mistrust their faith, abandon superstition and irrationality, and ultimately embrace reason.

Book excerpt: Unlike more technical texts stuffed with formulae and theories, this book explains in plain English how power is created and replaces formulae with everyday examples and easy-to-understand illustrations. It opens with an explanation of how electricity is generated, then covers the planning and development of electric power stations, emphasizing modern considerations of merchant power plants, repowering, and the growth of gas turbine generation. The "facts" of generation are covered in part two--boilers, turbines, generators, hydro and pumped storage, and "alternative" generations sources, suchs geothermal, tidal, solar, and wind. Maintenance and operations are covered in basic overview format. Finally, environmental considerations--again, an increasing concern in light of deregulation and environmental law--are reviewed. In addition, the authors cover specific features and fuel-types in nontechnical terms. Industry newcomers will appreciate this clear explanation of how power is created.

Book excerpt: A biography of the charismatic and controversial Yugoslavian leader Josip Broz Tito. The near-mythological figure Josip Broz Tito was a complicated one. An oppressor, a dictator, a reformer, and a playboy, Tito was an inspirational partisan leader and scourge of the Germans during their occupation of Yugoslavia in the Second World War, a doctrinaire communist, and an ever-present thorn in Moscow’s side. He managed Yugoslavia’s internal tensions through personality, a force of will, and political oppression. It was only after his death in 1980 that the true scale of his influence was understood. At that time, Yugoslavia’s institutions and politicians were revealed as rudderless, and the country created by Tito—a Croat turned Yugoslav—collapsed into a bloody and at times genocidal civil war. These ethnic conflicts were Tito’s nightmare, yet, as Neil Barnett shows in this short but engaging biography, they were in many ways the result of his own myopic egomania.
