Book excerpt: Almost half of everything sold in America is listed at some kind of promotional price. People don't only want a deep discount, they expect it - and won't settle for anything less. In this playful, deeply researched book, journalist Mark Ellwood takes a trip into this new landscape. From the floor of upscale department store Sergdorf Goodman to the bustling aisles of a Turkish bazaar, from the outlet Disneyworld of rural Pennsylvania to a town in Florida that can claim to be couponing's spiritual capital, Ellwood shows how some people are, quite literally, born to be bargain junkies thanks to a quirk of their DNA. He also uncovers the dark side of discounting: the sales-driven sleights of hand that sellers employ to hoodwink unsuspecting buyers. Bargain Feveris a manual for thriving in this new era, when deal hunting has gone from being a sign of indigence to one of intelligence. There's never been a better time to be a buyer - at least if you know how the game works. 'This book is a bargain hunter's bible.' Marketing Traps: How to Spot Fake Discounts versus Real Discounts in Stores Things You Must Know About Store Coupon Policies Loyalty Programs: Why do they exist and why should you care? 16 Useful Resources for Snagging the Best Deals Conclusion Final Word/About the Author An excerpt from the book: The notion of bargain shopping for groceries has been around at least as long as grocery stores themselves. Back in the 14th century, there were small locally owned grocers (also known as trading posts) that would sell dry items such as tea, herbs, spices, sugar, coffee, and other baking goods. As time passed, they began to sell other household staple foods such as canned meat, fruit, vegetables, or soups. Typically, customers would walk into these types of stores; hand a list to the clerk, and the clerk would bag up the items and ring them up. Since most of the foods were nonperishable, there were seldom sales like we see today. Bargains were only found in the case of an over stocked item, or through friendly one-on-one negotiations. In 1916 in Memphis Tennessee, Clarence Saunders established Piggly Wiggly, a popular common store seen throughout the southern United States. This was the first 'self-serve' grocer. This way of shopping proved to be very popular for both customers and storeowners. The customer enjoyed the freedom of browsing for the most desired items. Piggly Wiggly carried a whopping 605 different items (a sharp contrast to the then dated smaller local stores) and there was a greater opportunity for the consumer to purchase more than what they initially intended, making the storeowner happy as well. However, because there were a wider variety of perishable goods the store had to mark down prices on fresh produce, meats, dairy and eggs. It did not take a smart shopper long to figure out that the best day for shopping was the day before the next delivery was expected. The clerks always marked down the older items, to make room for the new. Book excerpt: Discounts are no longer the exception, they're the norm. But is that bargain really a bargain? Paying full price is so passé. A quarter of the population will only open their wallets if something is on sale. Everyone wants a deal, a steal, a hookup with a discount or a way to cut costs. People don't only want a deep discount, they expect it and won't settle for anything less. They're lucky, then, that almost half of everything sold in America is listed at some kind of promotional price. It's a seismic shift that has made shoppers more savvy than ever, generating phenomena like extreme couponing, flash sales, and Groupon. So there's never been a better time to be a buyer, right? Perhaps. Sellers have developed their own tricks to protect profit margins amid such mark-down mania ones that include secret sales, shifting prices, and shredding perfectly good clothes. In this playful, deeply researched book, journalist Mark Ellwood takes a trip into this new landscape. He shows how some people are, quite literally, born to be bargain junkies thanks to a quirk of their DNA, and uncovers the sales-driven sleights of hand that sellers employ to hoodwink unsuspecting buyers. Ellwood takes us from the floor of upscale department store Bergdorf Goodman to the bustling aisles of a Turkish bazaar, from the outlet Disney world of rural Pennsylvania to a town in Florida that can claim to be couponing's spiritual capital. We meet savvy buyers trying to wring value from every cent stalking fashion editor's tweets to learn about sample sales or camping out overnight for a cut-price computer. Ellwood also uncovers the dark side of discounting: how organized crime steals coupons en masse and how certain boutiques limit discounts to VIPs, running secret sticker promotions from which the ordinary shopper is excluded. Bargain Feveris a manual for thriving in this new era, when deal hunting has gone from being a sign of indigence to one of intelligence. There's never been a better time to be a buyer at least if you know how the game works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to food, Americans seem to have a pretty great deal. Our grocery stores are overflowing with countless varieties of convenient products. But like most bargains that are too good to be true, the modern food system relies on an illusion. It depends on endless abundance, but the planet has its limits. So too does a healthcare system that must absorb rising rates of diabetes and obesity. So too do the workers who must labor harder and faster for less pay. Through beautifully-told stories from around the world, Kevin Walker reveals the unintended consequences of our myopic focus on quantity over quality. A trip to a Costa Rica plantation shows how the Cavendish banana became the most common fruit in the world and also one of the most vulnerable to disease. Walker’s early career in agribusiness taught him how pressure to sell more and more fertilizer obscured what that growth did to waterways. His family farm illustrates how an unquestioning belief in “free markets” undercut opportunity in his hometown. By the end of the journey, we not only understand how the drive to produce ever more food became hardwired into the American psyche, but why shifting our mindset is essential. It starts, Walker argues, with remembering that what we eat affects the wider world. If each of us decides that bigger isn’t always better, we can renegotiate the grand food bargain, one individual decision at a time.
