Ciara is all that Alison aspires to be - sassy, confident and fearless. Although their backgrounds could not be more different, they find solace and humour in each other's company. That is until gorgeous Dan Abernethy, a young medical student, enters their lives, and everything changes irrevocably. Love turns Alison's world upside down and a terrible betrayal threatens everything she holds dear. It is only when tragedy strikes many years later that Alison and Ciara are offered a chance at redemption.

Book excerpt: A Barefoot Life is a loving presentation of my experiences of sixty-five years. Growing up in beautiful Kentucky meant that I could shed my shoes in May and seldom don them again until September. Yes, I stepped on stones, splinters, bugs, and nails. However, I raced through cool, soft dust on a shady lane; I waded through squishy, muddy puddles provided for me by a sudden summer shower. I watched as wandering wooly worms tiptoed across my foot. I dangled bare feet in Green River and giggled as tiny fish gently nipped and scurried about. Therefore, life handed me the good and the bad. Writing helps me to be happy and peaceful in my heart. Memories, such as a policeman rocking me to sleep because my parents were bearing the unbelievable grief of losing three sons in one day, chip away at that peace and happiness. But, a higher power always soothes my wounds.

What critics have said about Garrison's tanka: "First Winter Rain is a welcome new poetry collection from a master of the tanka form in English." Amelia Fielden M.A., translator & poet, Australia "Wide-ranging in subject matter, restless and probing in their inquiry of the human heart, Denis Garrison's tanka are somewhere near the fulcrum of all his efforts in poetry as editor, poet, and essayist. (He) gifts us all with a lifetime of experience in the highs and lows of a well-traveled soul." Michael McClintock, President, Tanka Society of America "Denis M. Garrison is a key contributor to the development of tanka in English. His practical encouragement of other writers is widely recognised and appreciated." Beverley George, Editor: Eucalypt: a tanka journal

"Wrenching debut about family, loss, and finding the strength to carry on."—Booklist, starred review "Blazes bright, gripping readers until the novel's last page."—Publishers Weekly, starred review "Vital and perilous and hopeful."—Alan Gratz, New York Times bestselling author of Refugee It is 1913, and twelve-year-old Petra Luna's mama has died while the Revolution rages in Mexico. Before her papa is dragged away by soldiers, Petra vows to him that she will care for the family she has left—her abuelita, little sister Amelia, and baby brother Luisito—until they can be reunited. They flee north through the unforgiving desert as their town burns, searching for safe harbor in a world that offers none. Each night when Petra closes her eyes, she holds her dreams close, especially her long-held desire to learn to read. Abuelita calls these barefoot dreams: "They're like us barefoot peasants and indios—they're not meant to go far." But Petra refuses to listen. Through battlefields and deserts, hunger and fear, Petra will stop at nothing to keep her family safe and lead them to a better life across the U.S. border—a life where her barefoot dreams could finally become reality. "Dobbs' wrenching debut, about family, loss, and finding the strength to carry on, illuminates the harsh realities of war, the heartbreaking disparities between the poor and the rich, and the racism faced by Petra and her family. Readers will love Petra, who is as strong as the black-coal rock she carries with her and as beautiful as the diamond hidden within it."—Booklist, starred review
